DAY 3 - SEMINAR

DATE : FEBRUARY 15, 2024

GUEST SPEAKER : MS. DOWNA MARLEY YANNO
TOPIC : PHILIPPINE DISASTER RISK REDUCTION MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM

SUMMARY OF LEARNING

For the 3rd day of our seminar, we had Ms. Yano teach us. To be honest I thought the
discussion would be boring as we had the other school with us but the topic she taught
us was very exciting to me. She had taught us the faces of disaster and the reasons for
disasters. In the Face of Disasters, the Pacific Ring of Fire is surely involved as it has 24
active volcanoes underneath. Also, the Pacific Typhoon Belt is the cause of different
weather disturbances. Also, she made me realize that both Natural hazards and
Man-made hazards are also disasters. Fire is also a human man hazard as it was made
because a person was not paying attention to their things. As for the other disasters we
have El Niño and Climate Change. She also taught us the effects of disaster which are
Death, Missing, Displaced Community, Environment, and Economic Loss. These 5 are
one of the main effects of a disaster. Also because of Ms. Yano, I learned some parts of
First aid which can be helpful to me/us in future events. She also taught us how to be
prepared, like saving food for the future. It was a great learning opportunity for us
students because we gained new learnings that would be helpful in the future. I was also
reminded of the fact that in an emergency, we must act quickly to take care of our
requirements, particularly while the pandemic is still ongoing. To ensure that the
situation does not worsen, it is crucial to understand and utilize basic first aid in
conjunction with caution and care.

DATE : FEBRUARY 15, 2024
GUEST SPEAKER : BERLIN P. FLORES
TOPIC : RIDGE-TO-REEF APPROACH IN THE DRRM: THE TANAY
ONDOY EXPERIENCE

SUMMARY OF LEARNING

Mr Flores taught us what had happened on September 26, 2009, The Tanay Ondoy
Disaster. The 6 hours of rainfall that happened was equivalent to a month's worth of
rainfall. 1 million families were affected by that disaster. The storm Ondoy brought an
unusually high volume of rain, which generated high flooding in the Marikina River
causing extensive flooding in the Metro Manila area and the neighboring Rizal province,
including the cities of Antipolo, and Makati. It was also included as the 4th number that
has the most affected individuals. In the aftermath of the storm Ondoy, the municipality
of Tanay became more prepared for the upcoming disasters that may happen in the
future. As Mr. Flores said their municipality became more strict about things and they
made additional laws for them. As chainsaw Permission, Waste Segregation Rule, and No
Styros allowed outside. They also have Charcoal Briquettes which became
award-winning. Tanay also has different things for floods, like sirens and level markers.
The things Tanay has made me jealous of how prepared they are. I wish my municipality,
Taytay, could also be like Tanay in terms of being prepared for future disasters that can
happen.
