For my blog, I'm reporting a follow-up to my August 13 item about the CRC's updated choking rescue guidelines: http://www.the-sidebar.com/2011/08/scoop-i-think-canadian-red-cross.html 1) On what date were the new choking rescue guidelines implemented? 2) Would you please provide me with copies of any press releases that describe the update? 3) Are you aware of any media reports about the update? If so, would you please direct me to the earliest one? 4) What's the name of the CRC department that was responsible for the update? Thanks again and I look forward to your reply. I'm not on a tight deadline but if you can get back to me in the next few days, that would be appreciated. Sincerely, Peter Peter M. I have also ccd my colleague Nita who works with our Injury Prevention team should you have any additional questions. Kind Regards, Katie 1) On what date were the new choking rescue guidelines implemented? The new choking response guidelines will be introduced in all our first aid training programs beginning November 1. Our new manuals and resources will also include the updated guidelines. 2) Would you please provide me with copies of any press releases that describe the update? The Canadian Red Cross hasnt issued any media releases on this topic. 3) Are you aware of any media reports about the update? If so, would you please direct me to the earliest one? When the new recommended guidelines were released internationally in October 2010, there was some media coverage around this. Perhaps try the ILCOR website http://www.ilcor.org/en/home/ for news coverage. 4) What's the name of the CRC department that was responsible for the update? Injury Prevention, which includes First Aid, Swimming & Water Safety, and Lifeguarding programs.

Does the CRC intend to issue any press releases on the updated choking rescue guidelines? If so, approximately when will the first one be published? If the CRC does not intend to issue any press releases on the topic, would you please provide me with a brief explanation for the basis of that decision? >Are you aware of any media reports about the update? I meant, besides my August 13 blog item, are you aware of any other media reports about the pending CRC choking rescue guidelines update? Our program has been updated to reflect the most recent scientific research, but the recommended guidelines are from the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and the International First Aid Science Advisory Board. ILCOR reviews published scientific evidence in the health care field and releases recommendations on resuscitation procedures every five years. An ILCOR subcommittee co-chaired by the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association was also established to research first aid treatment guidelines, known as the International First Aid Science Advisory Board. The Canadian Red Cross is a member of this first aid committee. The Red Cross First Aid Program is based on the recommendations from these committees. All national first aid training agencies consider the implications of these recommendations and update their training programs and materials accordingly. The recommendations were released to the media by ECC in October 2010. For further information, I would recommend that you connect with the American Red Cross. Their media relations line for health and safety services is 202-303-5551. Thank you, Nita Nita Singh

I'd appreciate your answers to a few quick follow-up questions. >The Canadian Red Cross does not intend to issue a media release on the new choking response guidelines. 1) Per my previous e-mail, would you please provide me with a brief explanation for the basis of the decision not to issue a press release? Also, would you please provide me with the name of the CRC employee responsible for that decision? 2) Presumably the CRC believes the Canadian public is entitled to have access to the best available first aid information since such knowledge may be the difference between life and death. Since the CRC does not intend to provide the information about the choking rescue guidelines update to the media, presumably the only access the public will have to the information will be by taking a CRC training class and via the CRC website. Is this correct? If not, would you please explain? 3) Presumably you're aware that the 2010 ILCOR choking rescue guidelines are near-identical to ILCOR's 2005 guidelines. In response to the 2005 guidelines, in Spring 2006, the American Red Cross changed their choking rescue guidelines to the guidelines which the CRC is now incorporating. Why did the CRC choose to wait another five years? Thanks for your continued attention and I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Peter Peter M.
