Fostering Social

Literacy in the
Classroom

01 CLASSROOM
DISCUSSION
Students' social skills can be
directly taught by teachers during
a designated period in the
curriculum.

02 GROUP PROJECTS
Assign cooperative projects to
promote good communication.
Students can learn social skills
including accountability, goal-
setting, and teamwork through
both large and small group
activities.

03 CREATE SHARED
NORMS
Develop a social language that will
become ingrained in the culture of
the classroom. There are simple,
understandable ways to interact with
others in this language, such as how
to listen, express thanks, or
apologize.

04 TEACH SOCIAL
SKILLS EARLY
Students who learn to work together more
develop their social skills. To offer
youngsters a role in establishing their own
common social norms, we must move away
from more conventional leadership tactics
that compel cooperation through rules and
compliance.
