Reported speech is the way in which you can tell, explain, write or
say something in your own words, changing
REPORTE the verb tense to the past. It differs from direct speech in this way,
since direct speech implies that you say or
write everything verbatim and exactly as it happened.

You must learn that, in reported
speech, verb tenses change.
SPEECH
RULES simple present = simple past
Present continuous = Past continuous
simple past = simple past perfect
past continuous = past continuous perfect
Present perfect simple = past perfect simple
Adverbs of time also change Past perfect simple = Past perfect continuous
Today = that day The modal verbs, also change
tonight = that night Will = Would
EXAMPLES Tomorrow = the nex day can = Could
Now = Then must = had to
Yesterday = The Previous Small = Should
day / The day before May = might
