A NEW NAME, A NEW TIME, THE MAGIC CONTINUES

We lcom e!
We’re delighted that you’re taking part in the first ever Harry Potter
Book Day, the annual celebration of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter stories,
which was previously known as Harry Potter Book Night.
The name and date of the event may have changed, but the goal of this
event kit remains the same. We want to make it as easy as possible for
you to celebrate the occasion, so have created this booklet to help you
plan your own events, parties and other festivities.
The theme for this year’s Harry Potter Book Day is Magical Places.
From platform nine and three -quarters to Hogsmeade, The Burrow
to the Ministry of Magic, there’s a whole wizarding world to explore
through enchanting games, magical crafts and bewitching activities!
Wands at the ready … the magic starts here!

— The team at Bloom sbury

Harry walked more quickly. He was going

to smash right into that ticket box and then
he’d be in trouble – leaning forward on his
trolley he broke into a heavy run – the barrier
was coming nearer and nearer – he wouldn’t
be able to stop – the trolley was out of
control – he was a foot away – he closed his
eyes ready for the crash –
It didn’t come … he kept on running …
he opened his eyes.
A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign
overhead said Hogwarts Express, 11 o’clock. Harry looked behind him and saw a wrought-
iron archway where the ticket box had been, with the words Platform Nine and Three-
Quarters on it. He had done it.
Smoke from the engine drifted over the heads of the chattering crowd, while cats of
every colour wound here and there between their legs. Owls hooted to each other in a
disgruntled sort of way over the babble and the scraping of heavy trunks.

DECORATING YOUR SPACE

Here are some ideas for how you can transform your event space into something
magical.
You could create one magical place, or have lots of different elements from different
places in your space. It’s time to get creative!

Platform Nine and Three-Quarters

Platform nine and three-quarters is the gateway between Hogwarts and the Muggle
(non-magical) world. Try these decoration ideas and transport yourself to the magical
side of King’s Cross station!

Here are just a few ideas:

• Draw your own platform nine and three-quarters sign. Make sure to stick it high
up in the room so everybody can see it!
• Paint an old white sheet with an image of the Hogwarts Express, and pin the
sheet on the wall as a backdrop.
• Recreate the Hogwarts Express’ iconic plumes of smoke using cotton balls.
• Arrange a selection of food and drink on a trolley, to represent the tea trolley on
the train.
• Have one of the event hosts dress up as the trolley witch, to offer your guests
refreshments – ‘Anything off the trolley, dears?’

PREPARATION 7

The Great Hall

The Great Hall is one of the most iconic
magical places in the Harry Potter series.
Try these decoration ideas to create a space
fit for a feast!
• Print out our handy owl templates
here. Once printed, write the names
of Hogwarts students and/or those
attending your event on the card each
owl carries. Suspend the owls from the
ceiling using threads of cotton, or place
them on shelves or around a fireplace to
create the illusion of the arrival of the
owl postal service.
• At feasts, the Great Hall is often lit with floating candles. To make your own, paint
the cardboard centres of kitchen rolls white and insert battery-operated tea lights
into the top. Use wire or nylon thread to suspend them from the ceiling to give
the illusion of floating candles.
• Set up four tables arranged side-by-side – one for each of the Hogwarts houses.
• Create your own house bunting by cutting out triangles of paper, colouring them
in with house colours and attaching them to a long piece of string, to suspend
from a wall or ceiling.
Ministry of Magic
The Ministry of Magic is the wizarding government
and its British headquarters has ten floors, full of
different offices and departments. Have a go at some of
the decorations below to help your party uncover some
of its mystery!
Department of Mysteries
• Fill bookshelves with snow globes, round drinking glasses or even bowls, and add
labels so they look like the prophecies on the shelves in the Hall of Prophecy.
• Make a ‘Keep out!’ sign.
Main offices
• The Ministry of Magic is famed for its flying interdepartmental memos. Create
your own by writing ‘TOP SECRET’ or ‘IMPORTANT’ on pieces of A4 paper and
folding into aeroplanes. These memos could be suspended from the ceiling using
threads of cotton, or placed on tables.

PREPARATION 8

Fireplace entrance
• Employees of the Ministry of Magic can
enter the building through one of the many SAFELY TRAVELLING BY
fireplaces connected to the Floo Network. Cut FLOO NETWORK:
the frame of a fireplace out of cardboard and • Tuck your elbows in
paint it a dark brown.
• Keep your eyes shut
• Prop your frame upright and, inside, place
• Don’t fidget
some crumpled green crepe paper. This will
represent the magical emerald flames. • Speak clearly
• Next to the fireplace, you could include a • Get out at the right grate!
flowerpot filled with sand to represent the
Floo Powder.

You could also hang a sign nearby featuring clear instructions for the safe use of the
Floo Network.

Gringotts Wizarding Bank

Gringotts is the only wizarding bank in the United Kingdom, located on the north
side of Diagon Alley. This vast marble building is full of Knuts, Sickles and Galleons
– wizarding money – and is thought to be the second safest place in the wizarding
world, behind Hogwarts.

• Print out our gold Galleon

template here. Create piles
of this wizarding currency
to recreate the interior of
Gringotts, placing them in
different areas of the room,
or outside.
• If you have a cart or a
wheelbarrow, you could
use it to recreate the cart
journey that Hagrid and
Harry take in Harry Potter
and the Philosopher’s Stone
when they visit the Potter
family vault.

PREPARATION 9

The Knight Bus

The Knight Bus appears whenever a witch or
wizard is in urgent need of transportation; they
just have to stick their wand arm out at the side of
the road.

• Draw and cut out your own tickets for the

Knight Bus, with one for each guest. Guests
can ‘buy’ a ticket in exchange for eleven paper
Sickles.
• Recreate the interior of the Knight Bus by
arranging chairs in rows as if they were the
seats inside. One of your event hosts could
dress as Stan Shunpike, the conductor, in
his purple uniform. You could ask guests to
present their tickets before they hop on board,
and even offer them hot chocolate!
• Set up a destination board in front of your seats. Invite your guests to write where
they would like to travel to on the board – remember, the Knight Bus can travel
anywhere, as long as it’s on land, so your guests can let their imaginations run wild!

The Burrow
The Burrow, the home of the Weasley family, is Harry’s second favourite place, after
Hogwarts. He often stays at The Burrow during school holidays.

• The Burrow’s clock keeps track of the many members of the Weasley family,
showing exactly where they all are at any given time. Draw a clockface and write
the names of your guests at the different locations on the clock.

PREPARATION 10

Photo Op Fun
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry is referred to as ‘Undesirable Number
One’. He finds a poster of himself on the wall, with the words UNDESIRABLE NO. 1
emblazoned across his chest!

Create your own sign using a large piece of cardboard, scissors and colouring pens. Cut
out the centre to create a frame so guests can stand in it and pose as an infamous witch
or wizard.

Include nearby a basket filled with handy props such as:

• A witch or wizard’s hat
• An old shoe or boot, for a Portkey (this is a magical object enchanted to instantly
take anyone touching it to a specific location. They are normally disguised as
something normal like a boot)
• A broomstick
• A chalk sign to write the guest’s name on and hold while the photo is taken
Encourage your guests to use their imaginations. For example, they might like to take
a snap of them riding on an (invisible) Thestral to escape!

Remember to tag your photos with #HarryPotterBookDay!

FOOD AND DRINK 11

FOOD AND DRINK

Here are lots of ideas for sweet and savoury treats for your event. You could decorate
different areas of your space to match the various magical settings. The below are
suggestions. Feel free to create your own magical foods. Try to use as many healthy
ingredients as possible.

Hogwarts Express
Recreate some of these treats from the tea trolley on the Hogwarts Express:
• Cauldron Cakes – make a batch of dark chocolate cupcakes. Cut off the top
so that it is flat, and ice with cream in an array of colours to represent different
potions inside. Muddy brown could be used for Polyjuice Potion, yellow for
Felix Felicis and purple for the Draught of Living Death. Take thin strips of soft
liquorice and stick each end from one side of your cupcake to another, to make a
handle.
• Pumpkin pasties – make a savoury version with fillings such as potatoes,
vegetables or meat, wrapped inside a shortcrust pastry parcel.
• Pumpkin juice – fill up a jug with orange or tropical juice.
• Liquorice Wands – arrange liquorice sticks on a plate in different flavours and
colours.

Tea in Hagrid’s hut

• Pot of tea – no invention necessary on this one; make a nice big pot of tea for
everybody to enjoy!
• Rock cakes – arrange a plate
of scones or rock cakes on
a plate, with either savoury
or sweet fillings on the
side. Will you opt for fresh
cucumber or moreish jam
and cream, or something
else entirely?
• Dandelion juice – fill a jug
with a floral elderflower
juice or cordial.
• Stoat sandwiches – prepare a big plate of sandwiches for your hungry guests –
but swap the stoat for ham, corned beef or a meat substitute!

FOOD AND DRINK 12

Herbology greenhouses
• Dragon dung compost – fill a new, clean plant pot with chocolate chips. Will any
of your guests dare to try them?
• The Hogwarts vegetable patch – load a platter with the freshest raw vegetables
you can find. Encourage your guests to take big bites of whole vegetables, as if
they’ve just picked them from the garden.
• Pesky worms – create chocolate soil by bashing up chocolate biscuits in cling
film. Arrange the ‘soil’ in a single layer, then poke jelly worms out of the top.
• Toadstool bites – make toadstool-shaped pizza bites with tomato sauce as the red
top and goat’s cheese or mozzarella blobs for the spots. Either use a cutter to give
the toadstool shape, or – with an adult’s help – use a photo as a tracing guide.

Gringotts Bank
Cut watermelon, kiwi and other brightly coloured fruit into squares to create jewels.

Ollivanders
Use cheese sticks to create wands. Cut frozen puff pastry into strips and sprinkle them
with cheese. Bake them to packet instructions or until they have puffed up and are
golden brown.

Potions ingredients storeroom

Grab as many different flavours of squash as you can and present them next to a big
bottle of diet lemonade. Your guests can mix their own ‘potion’, with the lemonade
giving a bubbling effect! What colours will your guests come up with?

The Forbidden Forest

• Tree cookies – use a tree-shaped cookie cutter to cut
pre-made cookie dough into tree shapes, and bake until
cooked. Once cooled, ice them using earthy colours
such as dark forest greens and chocolate browns.
• Cucumber trees – make cucumber-shaped trees by
cutting strips of cucumber and threading them onto
cocktail sticks. You could have half of a cherry tomato
at the bottom for the base.

COSTUMES 13

COSTUMES
To make your day truly memorable, encourage your guests to get dressed up. Here are
some ideas:
• A Hogwarts student, sporting their house colours after being sorted in the
Great Hall:
• Gryffindor colours are red and gold
• Hufflepuff colours are yellow and black
• Slytherin colours are green and silver
• Ravenclaw colours are blue and bronze
• Fred or George Weasley running their Diagon
Alley shop, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, in their
iconic magenta outfits. You could dress up in the
same clothes as a friend and come as the twins – extra
points for finding red wigs!
• Hagrid in very warm clothes, settling down for a
cup of tea in his hut. You could wear a big black coat,
some boots, and a fake black beard.
• Professor Dumbledore, relaxing in his office. A
dressing gown or sheet with moons and stars on it
will allow you to imitate his robes. Don’t forget the
giant white beard and glasses!
• Professor Snape, about to lead a Potions class
in the dungeon. An all-black cloak or even a
big bin bag could help you really get into
character!
• The dragon inside
Gringotts Bank.

COSTUMES 14

• A Healer in lime-green robes at St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and

Injuries. Don’t forget your clipboard!
• A Dementor at Azkaban prison.
• Hermione’s cat, Crookshanks, relaxing in the Gryffindor common room.
• Ron’s rat, Scabbers, after escaping again during a lesson!

Superfans could try an even more advanced costume! Here are some ideas:
• A book from the Hogwarts Library, for example The Monster Book of Monsters.
• The Hogwarts Express itself.
• One of the many Hogwarts ghosts.
• A unicorn from the Forbidden Forest.
• The giant squid from the Hogwarts lake.
Why not include a parade as part of your event so everyone can show off their amazing
costumes?

WHAT TO DO:
• Some people may already know their house so make sure to check before you
begin the ceremony.
• Prepare by placing pieces of paper with GRYFFINDOR, HUFFLEPUFF,
SLYTHERIN and RAVENCLAW into a box or container. You’ll need one piece of
paper for each person attending.
• One by one, get your guests to sit on the chair and select a piece of paper with
their house name from the container.
• While others are being sorted, guests can decorate their own name tag.
• Alternatively, you could sort people using Sorting Hat cupcakes. Please see here
for more details.

Game 1 – Diagon Alley

Now you are all set, let the games begin!

After meeting Hagrid and being told that he is a wizard, Harry is taken to Diagon
Alley to purchase everything he needs for the school year ahead.
Now it’s time for your guests to immerse themselves in everything Diagon Alley has
to offer!

Before the event begins, make your cards by writing a magical item on a small piece
of paper or card and folding it. You could use our suggested list on the next page, or

GAMES 16

if your guests aren’t necessarily familiar with the stories you can decide on your own
more recognisable magical items to make it easier.

IDEAS INCLUDE:
Work robes • Pointed hat • Protective gloves • Winter cloak • Wand • Cauldron •
Glass or crystal phials • Telescope • Brass scales

Read aloud to set the scene:

‘Welcome,’ said Hagrid, ‘to Diagon Alley.’

He grinned at Harry’s amazement. They stepped

through the archway. Harry looked quickly over his
shoulder and saw the archway shrink instantly back into
solid wall.

The sun shone brightly on a stack of cauldrons outside the nearest

shop. Cauldrons - All Sizes - Copper, Brass, Pewter, Silver - Self-stirring
- Collapsible said a sign hanging over them.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

HOW TO PLAY:
1. One-at-a-time, guests must pick a folded card.
2. Guests should act out the item on their card, for the group to guess.
3. The first person to guess correctly wins that point!

An alternative way to play this game would be to have two groups, each with their own
set of cards. One person from each team has sixty seconds to act out as many cards as
they can. Whichever group guesses the most correctly in that time, wins!

GAMES 17

Game 2 – The Ministry of Magic

The Ministry of Magic is responsible for
preserving every magical law and practice across
the wizarding world. With so many departments
spread across such a big underground space,
sending messages in the Ministry is tricky!
Luckily, a system of interdepartmental memos,
written on pale violet paper aeroplanes, was
introduced. Before this, owls were used all across
the Ministry – but they left a big mess!

HOW TO PLAY:
1. To prepare the game, make your own set of paper planes.
2. Get everyone to write a wizarding message on their paper plane. You could write
a message to Arthur Weasley, who works at the Ministry of Magic, or a note
describing an imagined magical accident.
3. Once you’ve finished your message, fold it into a paper plane.
4. Once all guests have made a plane, race them! Whether this is in one big race or a
series of heats is up to you. The winner is the person who can send their Ministry
of Magic message the furthest.

Game 3 – Packing for the Hogwarts Express

Every September, Hogwarts students must make the long journey from platform nine
and three-quarters to school aboard the Hogwarts Express. With so many magical
possessions to carry, it’s no wonder students use big trunks!

1. Each person should take it in turns to name an item you may find inside a
Hogwarts student’s trunk. This could be something magical
– a broomstick, for example – or non-magical, like clothes!
2. The object of the game is to remember the name and order
of the objects given by the people before you. If you miss an
object, or read it out in the wrong order, you’re out. The last
person in wins.
3. For example, the first person could say, ‘I opened the trunk
and I found a broomstick.’ The second person would then
repeat ‘broomstick’ and then add an item of their own: ‘I
opened the trunk and I found a broomstick and clothes.’
And so on.

Game 4 – Gringotts
Gringotts is a wizarding bank located in Diagon Alley. On his first visit to Gringotts,
Harry discovers that he has a vault full of Galleons, Sickles and Knuts. All through his
childhood, unbeknownst to him, he’d had a small fortune belonging to him, buried
deep under London!

Read aloud to set the scene:

Harry’s eyes stung as the cold air rushed past them, but he
kept them wide open. Once, he thought he saw a burst of fire at
the end of a passage and twisted around to see if it was a dragon,
but too late – they plunged even deeper, passing an underground
lake where huge stalactites and stalagmites grew from the ceiling
and floor.

‘I never know,’ Harry called to Hagrid over the noise of the cart, ‘what’s the
difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite?’

‘Stalagmite’s got an “m” in it,’ said Hagrid. ‘An’ don’ ask me questions just
now, I think I’m gonna be sick.’

He did look very green and when the cart stopped at last beside a small
door in the passage wall, Hagrid got out and had to lean against the wall to
stop his knees trembling.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Gather four drawstring bags. These will be the Gringotts vaults, so use your
imagination to make them as special as possible – you could add glitter or
diamantes and lots of colour!
2. Inside each bag, place lots of cardboard ‘coins’. Set aside an equal amount. You will
use these later.
3. Download this handy sheet, which includes all of the items you’ll need to print
out ahead of your event.
Items include: Armour • Broomstick • Potion flask • Wizard’s hat • Skull •
Goblet • Chocolate Frog • Wizard’s chess piece • Toad • Pixie
Alternatively, you can either use little figures, or draw and cut them out of
cardboard. If you are drawing these and cutting them out of cardboard, make sure
that the outline is distinctive as guests will be using touch in this game.

harrypotterbookday.com #HarryPotterBookDay

GAMES 19

4. Inside each of the bags, place one of each of these items. You will need four of
each of these – one for each bag.
5. Divide your group into four smaller groups.
6. Each group picks one person to hold the ‘vault’. The host calls the name of an
object or character and each group races against the others to find the object or
character. Each person competing must use one hand only to dig around in the
‘vault’ for the object, and can’t look inside. The first person to find it wins.
7. Ask your guests to take it in turns to hold the ‘vault’ each round, so everybody gets
a go at digging!

The game gets harder! The Geminio spell duplicates an object,

so after each round the host should add more coins to make it
more and more difficult for competitors to find their objects.

Game 5 – The Chamber of Secrets

In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry must battle an enormous snake,
known as a Basilisk, without looking into its eyes!

Read aloud to set the scene:

Of the many fearsome beasts and monsters that roam our

land, there is none more curious or more deadly than the Basilisk,
known also as the King of Serpents. This snake, which may reach
gigantic size, and live many hundreds of years, is born from a
chicken’s egg, hatched beneath a toad. Its methods of killing are
most wondrous, for aside from its deadly and venomous fangs,
the Basilisk has a murderous stare, and all who are fixed with the
beam of its eye shall suffer instant death. Spiders flee before the Basilisk, for
it is their mortal enemy, and the Basilisk flees only from the crowing of the
rooster, which is fatal to it.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

This game is best played outdoors or in a large open space.

HOW TO PLAY:
1. Ask one guest to volunteer to be the Basilisk; all of the other guests are Hogwarts
students. The Basilisk should stand at the front of the space, facing the front, with
their back to the other guests.

2. Directly behind them place a pretend sword – the sword of Gryffindor.

3. All the Hogwarts students and teachers stand at the back of the space, as far away
from the Basilisk as they can.
4. Students must slowly and carefully creep forwards while the Basilisk’s back is
turned, and they must freeze as soon as the Basilisk turns around. Each time
the Basilisk turns around, he or she points to the last person they saw moving,
freezing them on the spot. This person must remain frozen on the spot for the
remainder of the game.
5. The aim of the game is for one of the students to reach and touch the Gryffindor
sword that is at the Basilisk’s feet before everyone is Petrified (frozen) by the
Basilisk.

ACTIVITIES 21

ACTIVITIES
Activity 1 – Hogwarts kitchens
Preparing a Hogwarts feast – whether for Hallowe’en, Christmas
or a special event such as the Yule Ball – is no mean feat. All
of the feasts the students enjoy are prepared in the Hogwarts
kitchens by a team of house-elves.

Read aloud to set the scene:

Harry had never in all his life had such a Christmas dinner.
A hundred fat, roast turkeys, mountains of roast and boiled
potatoes, platters of fat chipolatas, tureens of buttered peas,
silver boats of thick, rich gravy and cranberry sauce — and
stacks of wizard crackers every few feet along the table. These
fantastic crackers were nothing like the feeble Muggle ones
the Dursleys usually bought, with their little plastic toys and
their flimsy paper hats. Harry pulled a wizard cracker with Fred and it didn’t
just bang, it went off with a blast like a cannon and engulfed them all in a
cloud of blue smoke, while from the inside exploded a rear-admiral’s hat and
several live, white mice. Up on the High Table, Dumbledore had swapped his
pointed wizard’s hat for a flowered bonnet and was chuckling merrily at a joke
Professor Flitwick had just read him.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Invite your guests to imagine that they are a student trying to gain access to the
Hogwarts kitchens. They approach the silver fruit bowl portrait, tickle the pear within
it and an entranceway opens up before them. There, on four long tables, lies enough
food to feed a castle! What will your guests imagine they are about to eat?

Hand out blank pieces of A4 paper and

invite your guests to draw their perfect
Hogwarts feast.

Activity 2 – Hogsmeade
Hogsmeade is the closest village to
Hogwarts, and when students reach
their third year, they are allowed to visit
on certain weekends. It is also famous
for being the only all-wizarding village

in Britain, and it is home to a dizzying array of magical

shops and businesses.

Harry had to sneak out of school the first time he visited

Hogsmeade – following a path revealed to him by the
Marauder’s Map, a magical document that shows the
grounds of Hogwarts, including hidden passageways!

Read aloud to set the scene:

Honeydukes was so crowded with Hogwarts students that

no one looked twice at Harry. He edged amongst them, looking
around, and suppressed a laugh as he imagined the look that
would spread over Dudley’s piggy face if he could see where
Harry was now.

There were shelves upon shelves of the most succulent-

looking sweets imaginable. Creamy chunks of nougat,
shimmering pink squares of coconut ice, fat, honey-coloured toffees; hundreds
of different kinds of chocolate in neat rows; there was a large barrel of Every
Flavour Beans, and another of Fizzing Whizzbees, the levitating sherbet balls
that Ron had mentioned; along yet another wall were ‘Special Effects’ sweets:
Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum (which filled a room with bluebell-coloured
bubbles that refused to pop for days), the strange, splintery Toothflossing
Stringmints, tiny black Pepper Imps (‘breathe fire for your friends!’), Ice Mice
(‘hear your teeth chatter and squeak!’), peppermint creams shaped like toads
(‘hop realistically in the stomach!’), fragile sugar-spun quills and exploding
bonbons.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Ask your guests to

imagine they’re in
charge of a wizarding
shop. They can pick
one of Hogsmeade’s
famous stores such as
Honeydukes, Gladrags
Wizardwear or Zonko’s
Joke Shop, or maybe
somewhere in Diagon
Alley such as Weasleys’

ACTIVITIES 23

Provide a set of craft materials including large sheets of paper, colouring pens, pencils
and stickers, and invite your guests to create a poster for their new shop. They should
come up with their shop’s name and what they would sell – the possibilities are almost
endless! How could a poster attract Hogwarts students to this new shop?

Activity 3 – The Burrow

It may be a little rough around the edges, but The Burrow, the family home of Harry’s
friend Ron Weasley, is one of the most memorable magical spaces in the wizarding
world. A hodgepodge of tacked-on rooms and chimneys, it’d be a brilliant place to
spend a day (or two) exploring.

Read aloud to set the scene:

It looked as though it had once been a large stone pigsty, but

extra rooms had been added here and there until it was several
storeys high and so crooked it looked as though it was held up
by magic (which, Harry reminded himself, it probably was).
Four or five chimneys were perched on top of the red roof. A
lop-sided sign stuck in the ground near the entrance read The
Burrow. Round the front door lay a jumble of wellington boots
and a very rusty cauldron. Several fat brown chickens were pecking their way
around the yard.

‘It’s not much,’ said Ron.

‘It’s brilliant,’ said Harry happily, thinking of Privet Drive.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Arthur Weasley, who works for the Ministry of

Magic, is well known for finding Muggle artefacts
fascinating. He even took some home to The
Burrow with him – regardless of whether they
were charmed or not!

Photocopy the table on the next page and hand it

out to your guests.

Can your guests unscramble the letters

to reveal Arthur Weasley’s favourite Muggle
artefacts? To up the stakes, you could give a prize
to the first person to complete all nine!

Activity 4 – Quidditch World Cup

Quidditch is a popular sport played by witches and wizards riding flying broomsticks.
While Quidditch is played regularly by students at Hogwarts, it is also played
professionally by teams and nations across the world. The Quidditch World Cup
has been held every four years since 1473. According to Quidditch Through the
Ages, the very first final, competed by
Transylvania and Flanders, ‘has gone
down in history as the most violent
of all time and many of the fouls then
recorded had never been seen before’.
Ouch!

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,

Harry watches the Quidditch World
Cup final, played between Bulgaria and
Ireland and held in Dartmoor.

ACTIVITIES 25

Read aloud to set the scene:

The stairs into the stadium were carpeted in rich purple.

They clambered upwards with the rest of the crowd, which
slowly filtered away through doors into the stands to their left
and right. Mr Weasley’s party kept climbing, and at last they
reached the top of the staircase, and found themselves in a
small box, set at the highest point of the stadium and situated
exactly halfway between the golden goalposts. About twenty
purple-and-gilt chairs stood in two rows here, and Harry, filing
into the front seats with the Weasleys, looked down upon a scene the like of
which he could never have imagined.

A hundred thousand witches and wizards were taking their places in the
seats which rose in levels around the long oval pitch. Everything was suffused
with a mysterious golden light that seemed to come from the stadium itself.
The pitch looked smooth as velvet from their lofty position. At either end of
the pitch stood three goal hoops, fifty feet high; right opposite them, almost
at Harry’s eye level, was a gigantic blackboard.

[…]

The spectators screamed and clapped. Thousands of flags waved, adding

their discordant national anthems to the racket. The huge blackboard opposite
them was wiped clear of its last message (Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans – a
Risk with Every Mouthful!) and now showed BULGARIA: ZERO, IRELAND:
ZERO.

country in which they live, one they’ve visited on
holiday or even one they’ve just invented!

ACTIVITIES 26

Activity 5 – Room of Requirement

The Room of Requirement is a secret room at Hogwarts, which only appears when a
witch or wizard is in great need of it. It can transform itself into whatever the witch
or wizard needs it to be at that moment in time. For Harry, for example, it became
an open space full of bookshelves and magical instruments, perfect for training
Dumbledore’s Army.

Read aloud to set the scene:

‘Dobby knows the perfect place, sir!’ he said happily. ‘Dobby

heard tell of it from the other house-elves when he came to
Hogwarts, sir. It is known by us as the Come and Go Room, sir,
or else as the Room of Requirement!’

‘Why?’ said Harry curiously.

‘Because it is a room that a person can only enter,’ said

Dobby seriously, ‘when they have real need of it. Sometimes it is there, and
sometimes it is not, but when it appears, it is always equipped for the seeker’s
needs. Dobby has used it, sir,’ said the elf, dropping his voice and looking
guilty, ‘when Winky has been very drunk; he has hidden her in the Room of
Requirement and he has found antidotes to Butterbeer there, and a nice elf-
sized bed to settle her on while she sleeps it off, sir … and Dobby knows
Mr Filch has found extra cleaning materials there when he has run short, sir,
and – ’

‘And if you really needed a bathroom,’ said Harry, suddenly remembering

something Dumbledore had said at the Yule Ball the previous Christmas,
‘would it fill itself with chamber pots?’

‘Dobby expects so, sir,’ said Dobby, nodding earnestly. ‘It is a most amazing
room, sir.’
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

If you could ask your Room of Requirement to be anything at all, what would you ask
it to be? What are you in need of, and what form would your Room of Requirement
take?

Ask your guests to write a letter to a friend describing what’s in their Room.
Remember to include lots of detail! The more they know about the Room, the easier it
will be for the Room to appear.

Activity 6 – Hagrid’s hut

Hagrid is the gamekeeper and Keeper of Keys and Grounds of Hogwarts. His hut is
a safe haven, frequently visited by Harry, Ron and Hermione when they need some
advice, or want to find out one of Hogwarts’ many secrets. It is ramshackle but cosy,
and located on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Inside, you’ll find a whole host of
magical – and not so magical – items.

Read aloud to set the scene:

There was only one room inside. Hams and pheasants were
hanging from the ceiling, a copper kettle was boiling on the
open fire and in a corner stood a massive bed with a patchwork
quilt over it.

‘Make yerselves at home,’ said Hagrid, letting go of Fang,

who bounded straight at Ron and started licking his ears. Like
Hagrid, Fang was clearly not as fierce as he looked.

Activity 7 – The Knight Bus

The Knight Bus can take a witch or wizard anywhere they like, so long as it’s on land.
Stan Shunpike, the bus conductor, says the only reason that Muggles don’t notice the
bus is that they don’t listen or look properly!

Read aloud to set the scene:

There was a deafening BANG and Harry threw up his hands

to shield his eyes against a sudden blinding light …

With a yell, he rolled back onto the pavement, just in time.

A second later, a gigantic pair of wheels and headlights had
screeched to a halt exactly where Harry had just been lying.
They belonged, as Harry saw when he raised his head, to a
triple-decker, violently purple bus, which had appeared out of thin air. Gold
lettering over the windscreen spelled The Knight Bus.

For a split second, Harry wondered if he had been knocked silly by his fall.
Then a conductor in a purple uniform leapt out of the bus and began to speak
loudly to the night.

‘Welcome to the Knight Bus, emergency transport for the stranded witch
or wizard. Just stick out your wand hand, step on board and we can take you
anywhere you want to go.’

Activity 8 – Where was it said?

Read aloud to set the scene:

‘Yeh’ll get yer firs’ sight o’ Hogwarts in a sec,’ Hagrid called

over his shoulder, ‘jus’ round this bend here.’

There was a loud ‘Oooooh!’.

The narrow path had opened suddenly on to the edge of a

great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other
side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle
with many turrets and towers.

‘No more’n four to a boat!’ Hagrid called, pointing to a fleet of little boats
sitting in the water by the shore. Harry and Ron were followed into their boat
by Neville and Hermione.

‘Everyone in?’ shouted Hagrid, who had a boat to himself, ‘Right then –
FORWARD!’

And the fleet of little boats moved off all at once, gliding across the lake,
which was as smooth as glass. Everyone was silent, staring up at the great
castle overhead. It towered over them as they sailed nearer and nearer to the
cliff on which it stood.

crannies.

STUDIO TOUR 41

Take your students out of the classroom to the filmmaking home of the Harry Potter
series. Spend a spellbinding day outside of the classroom by stepping onto authentic
sets at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London. Board the original Hogwarts Express at
Platform 9 ¾, take in the grandeur of Gringotts Wizarding Bank, all before wandering
down Diagon Alley.

Inspire your students as they

learn how their favourite
subjects could lead them
to a career in the creative
industries. Whether your
students are masters of
Maths, excellent at English,
or focused on Film Studies,
they’ll see incredible real-
world applications of what
they’re learning at school.

As part of your school visit,

take a deeper look at the art
of filmmaking with cross-curricular lessons delivered by a team of qualified teachers in
purpose-built classrooms. The learning offering includes a variety of lessons spanning
Key Stages 2-5 and covers a range of curriculum areas including STEM, Art & Design,
English, Business Studies and Film & Media.

During each lesson, students will have the unique opportunity to see original props
and costumes from the Harry Potter films up-close. Lessons available include Movie
Maths, Costume Distressing, Screenplay Stories and Script to Screen, with each
lesson including pre- and post-visit resources to assist with lesson plans before and
after your visit. All 45-minute lessons are free to visiting schools and the Studio Tour
is a Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge holder. Lessons are subject to
availability, book early to avoid disappointment.
