Sociality in Primates
Overview
Primates are a large and diverse order of mammals. They play an important role in
studies of the evolution of sociality because there is considerable diversity in social
organization and mating systems across the order, and because primates have evolved
particularly complex forms of social behavior that rely on individual recognition, well-
differentiated relationships, and well-developed social cognition. The first field studies
of primates were conducted in the first half of the twentieth century by Clarence Ray
Carpenter who observed mantled howler monkeys (Alouatta palliata, Carpenter, 1934),
white-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar, Carpenter, 1940) and rhesus monkeys (Macaca
mulatta, Carpenter, 1942) in their natural habitats. In the 1940s, Kinji Imanishi began
studying free-ranging macaques (Macaca fuscata) in Japan, and developed a set of
techniques that would become the foundation of future research on wild primates:
habituation, individual recognition, and long-term studies (Matsuzawa & McGrew,
2008). In the past 60 years, researchers have amassed a large body of information
about the social behavior and ecology of many of the more than 400 primate species,
and as a result, today more is known about sociality in primates than in any other
mammalian order.

(Chapter 1). In particular social system, social structure, social living and social
organization are often used interchangeably, and mating system terminology has
frequently been used to describe how a population is sub-structured into social units,
thereby hampering comparisons across primates and comparisons among primates
and other taxa (Rowell, 1993; Müller & Thalmann 2000; Shultz, et al., 2011;
Swedell, 2012). However, a conceptual dissection of social systems and the associ-
ated terminology proposed by Kappeler & van Schaik (2002) has enjoyed growing
acceptance among primatologists (Cords, 2007), and has also been applied to other
mammals (Kappeler, et al., 2013).
According to the framework developed by Kappeler & van Schaik (2002), primate
social systems are defined by and encompass three interrelated, but heuristically
distinct, components: (1) social organization; (2) mating system; and (3) social struc-
ture. Social organization refers to who lives with whom and is defined as the size,
composition, cohesion, and genetic structure of a social unit. Three fundamental types
of social organization can be distinguished: (1) solitary: adults do not coordinate their
activities with conspecifics and spend most of their time alone (or with dependent
offspring); (2) pair-living: adults associate and coordinate their activities with one
member of the opposite sex for extended periods of time; (3) non-paired group living:
adults associate and coordinate their activities with at least two other conspecifics, and
form groups that can be further categorized in terms of their size and composition (e.g.
single-male vs. multi-male groups). Although group living is often equated with
sociality, it is important to emphasize that solitary species can display some of the
same kinds of social patterns that we see in group living species, such as non-random
patterns of contacts, individual recognition, cooperative predator mobbing, and com-
munal breeding (Kappeler, 2012).
Mating system refers to who mates with whom and how often. Because there is not
necessarily a strict correspondence between who lives with whom and who mates with
whom, genetic analyses play an important role in the analysis of mating systems. Apart
from providing information on the main categories of mating systems (e.g. monogamy,
polygyny, polyandry, polygynandry), these data also allow for estimates of the degree
of reproductive skew within each sex. Mating system terminology should not be used to
characterize different types of social organization because they are not necessarily
congruent. For example, individuals living in pairs (a type of social organization) can
have a monogamous mating system or participate in extra-pair matings, as occurs
among birds (Griffith, et al., 2002).
Social structure is defined as the set of all dyadic social relationships (except
mating) among group members, and constitutes an emergent property of the group.
According to Hinde (1976), social relationships represent the outcome of a contin-
gent series of social interactions between two individuals. The pattern and frequency
of interactions within a dyad will be influenced by the traits of each individual, such
as their age, sex, and physical condition, and by properties of the dyad, such as their
degree of relatedness. The pattern of relationships among all of the individuals in the
group shapes the social structure. Hinde’s abstract construct has been difficult
to operationalize, but social network analysis provides a valuable set of tools to

visualize and quantify group-level properties of the social structure (Sueur, et al.,
2011). For example, it is possible to assess the density of direct and indirect
connections among individuals within groups and the extent to which groups are
subdivided into cliques. Primatologists are just beginning to explore how the
topography of social networks varies across species, across groups within species,
and across time within groups.
Having defined the elements of social systems, we can now return to the question of
how social are primates. Only 5 percent of extant primates are classified as solitary
(Table 9.1). However, the proportion of solitary species will probably rise as we learn
more about the many strepsirrhine species and several tarsier species whose social
organization has not yet been described. If all these unknown species were solitary, the
proportion of solitary species would increase to 21 percent. Thus, 79 to 95 percent of all
primate species form groups, and all but two of the 275 species of Old World monkeys,
New World monkeys, and apes are group living.
It is important to point out that group living is not exclusively synonymous with
being social. Some solitary primates form day-time sleeping groups, some tolerate
same-sex conspecifics within their ranges, and some use (ultrasonic) vocal and
olfactory signals along with direct interactions to manage their relationships with
kin, mates, and neighbors (Schülke & Ostner, 2005; Nekaris & Bearder, 2011;
Kappeler, 2012). Furthermore, the spatial distribution of some solitary primates is
structured by kinship (Kappeler, et al., 2002), and this may have favored the
evolution of forms of sociality that are not usually associated with a solitary
lifestyle, such as temporary sleeping associations (Dammhahn & Kappeler, 2009;
van Noordwijk, et al., 2012) and communal nursing (Eberle & Kappeler, 2006).

are notoriously inaccurate, but the most careful estimates indicate that for species that
live in multi-male, multi-female groups, group size typically ranges from 50 to 70
(Patterson, et al., 2014).
Of the numerous benefits of living in groups (Alexander, 1974; Krause & Ruxton,
2002), two advantages seem to play the most important roles for primates: (1)
communal resource defense; and (2) anti-predator benefits. In evaluating the relative
importance of these and other factors, it is often difficult to distinguish between the
selective factors that promoted evolutionary transitions to group living and the
advantages that accrue once groups exist. The benefits contribute to the maintenance

of groups despite the centrifugal forces generated by the costs of group living. We
summarize these benefits and costs in this section.

predation avoidance has been widely accepted as the ultimate reason why virtually all
diurnal primates live in groups (van Schaik, 1983).
Predation risk has two fundamental impacts on primate social organization. First,
group size and cohesion vary as a function of predation risk. In the absence of predators,
group size decreases and the distance among individuals within groups increases (van
Schaik & van Noordwijk, 1985; Kappeler & Fichtel, 2012; Bettridge & Dunbar, 2012).
Second, increased predation risk favors an increase in the number of adult males per
group. This effect is evident in both inter-specific (van Schaik & Hörstermann, 1994;
Hill & Lee, 1998) and intra-specific comparisons (Stanford, 1998; Bettridge & Dunbar,
2013). Additional males contribute to group augmentation (Kokko, et al., 2001) and
adult males may be best suited to confront predators because of their superior size and
weaponry. Predation risk could also affect primate mating systems by favoring multi-
male societies and providing opportunities for more than one male to mate with females
(van Schaik & Hörstermann, 1994; Port & Kappeler, 2010). Thus, predation avoidance
has been an important force in primate evolution with far-ranging consequences for all
aspects of their social behavior.
9.3.3 Homeostasis
Although group-level benefits may promote the evolution of certain aspects of sociality
in many social insects (Oldroyd & Fewell, 2007), such benefits of grouping have not
been discussed in the primate literature. There are numerous links between aspects of
the social system of a species and the homeostasis of individuals, but these processes do
not seem to have acted as selective advantages promoting sociality in primates. Life in
groups facilitates thermoregulatory behaviors like huddling in primates inhabiting cool
or seasonally cold habitats (Ostner, 2002), but it is more likely that social tolerance in
group living species allowed some primates to successfully occupy temperate habitats
than vice versa. Permanent association and interaction with others may also create stress
for some individuals and promote the spread of pathogens (Freeland, 1976; Sapolsky,
2004), thus actually leading to deviations from homeostasis.
9.3.4 Mating
Mating opportunities may influence primate sociality in some ways. Lukas & Clutton-
Brock’s (2013) comparative study suggested that the formation of pairs among primates
is primarily due to mate defense, although other explanations focusing on infanticide
avoidance have been proposed as well (Opie, et al., 2013). Although males often guard
access to groups of females in species that live in larger social groups, male mate
guarding is unlikely to be the explanation for why females live together. It seems more
likely that females benefit from living in groups because they are safer from predators or
have better access to food. Males join groups to gain access to females, and their
presence in groups may help to protect females and their offspring from predators and
infanticidal threats.

Most pair-living primates are socially, but not genetically, monogamous (e.g. western
fat-tailed dwarf lemur, Cheirogaleus medius, Fietz, et al., 2000; fork-marked lemur,
Phaner furcifer, Schülke, et al., 2004; white-handed gibbons, Barelli, et al., 2013) as
they are among birds (Griffith, et al., 2002). However, genetic analyses confirm that
nocturnal owl monkeys, Aotus azarae, have a monogamous mating system (Huck,
et al., 2014).
Species that form multi-male and multi-female groups show considerable diversity in
mating systems. Most members of the subfamily Callitrichinae live in groups with
multiple adult males and females, but breed cooperatively. Current evidence indicates
that the dominant male and female monopolize reproduction in most cases (Anzenber-
ger & Falk, 2012). In other species that live in multi-male, multi-female groups, all
females are reproductively active, although some females may reproduce more success-
fully than others (Pusey, 2012). Among males, there is considerable variation in the
extent of reproductive skew across species (Port & Kappeler, 2010). In some species,
like Northern muriquis, Brachyteles hypoxanthus, paternity is fairly evenly distributed
among male group members and the most successful male sires only 18 percent of the
infants (Strier, et al., 2011). In contrast, in white-fronted capuchins, Cebus capucinus,
and yellow baboons, Papio cynocephalus, the most successful males sire about 80
percent of all infants (Altmann, et al., 1996; Alberts, et al., 2006; Muniz, et al., 2010),
and in Verreaux’s sifakas, Propithecus verreauxi, even more than 90 percent (Kappeler
& Schäffler, 2008).

As in most social vertebrates, ecology plays an important role in shaping primate social
organization. Primates occur in a range of habitats, they spend their lives on the ground
or up in the canopy, and they occur across the tropics on a number of continents.

9.4.2 Biogeography
Primates are mainly found in tropical regions of the Americas, Africa, and Asia, but
(non-human) primates are absent from Australia and New Zealand. The monkeys of the
New World belong to the infraorder Platyrrhini, and range from northern Mexico to
northern Argentina. While biogeographic factors seem to have an important impact on
species richness and diversity in primates as they do in other taxa (Lehman & Fleagle,
2005), there is no clear link between primate biogeography and sociality.

9.4.3 Niches
As a taxonomic group, primates rely upon a wide range of food resources, including
invertebrates and vertebrates, fruit, leaves, seeds, gum and saps, as well as various other
minor items (e.g. mushrooms, bark, soil). These food items vary greatly in energy
content, digestibility, processing requirements, and toxicity (Chapman, et al., 2012).
Furthermore, food items and food patches vary in size, density, and seasonal availability
(Koenig, 2002). Most primates eat a variety of kinds of foods, although the proportion
of fruit, leaves, and animal prey in the diet varies considerably across taxa (Chapman,
et al., 2012). Animals like the bamboo lemurs, Hapalemur spp., which feed almost
exclusively on bamboo (Tan, 1999) and spectral tarsiers, Tarsier spectrum, whose diet
is composed entirely of animals (Gursky, 2002), are exceptions to the rule. As noted
earlier, there is not a clear link between what primates eat and the kinds of groups they
live in, and the niche concept does not seem to play an important role in understanding
primate sociality.
Circadian activity acts as a strong constraint on primate social evolution (Terborgh &
Janson, 1986; Shultz, et al., 2011). Group living, in particular, is strongly associated
with diurnal activity, and only a few species of owl monkeys, lemurs, and bamboo
lemurs, Hapalemur spp., that can be active both day and night (Donati, et al., 2009;
Parga, 2011), exhibit some nocturnal activity in groups. The factors that favor cathem-
eral activity remain in the dark, as do the advantages of diurnal activity, which has
evolved at least three times in the course of primate evolution (Hill, 2006; Griffin, et al.,
2012).
There is a growing appreciation of the role that phylogenetic history plays in the
evolution of primate social organization (Di Fiore & Rendall, 1994; Shultz, et al.,
2011; Opie, et al., 2012; Kappeler, et al., 2013; Thierry, 2013). It has long been
recognized that closely related primate species exhibit very similar types of social
organization. For example, all species of the Hylobatidae, which includes gibbons
and siamangs, are pairliving. Comparative behavioral studies of macaques revealed
differences in social structure among ecologically very similar species that can best be
explained by their phylogenetic affiliation (Balasubramaniam, et al., 2012).
Formal phylogenetic analyses also suggest that evolutionary history has an important
impact on primate social organization. Shultz, et al. (2011) analyzed the phylogeny and
social organization of more than 200 primate species. Their analyses suggest that there
were a series of unilateral transitions in primate social organization over the last
65 million years. About 52 million years ago, there were the first transitions from
solitary life to group living. These analyses also indicate that the first groups were loose
aggregations of multiple males and females. From there, more stable multi-male, multi-
female groupings arose. And from the stable groups, both pair-bonded and one-male
harems emerged roughly 16 million years ago. In contrast, Lukas & Clutton-Brock

(2013) found a direct transition from solitary to pair-living in primates and other
mammalian taxa. The discrepancy in these findings may be related to the way social
organization, particularly pair-living, was categorized (Lukas & Clutton-Brock, 2013),
and underscores the importance of clear definitions and consistent terminology.
II SOCIAL TRAITS
Primates lead rich social lives. They recognize other group members and some neigh-
bors as individuals, participate in a diverse range of social interactions, and develop
well-differentiated social relationships. The patterning of their social interactions is
often structured by kinship, age, sex, and dominance rank.

and ape species (reviewed in Perry, 2006; Whiten, 2012). In nearly all cases, tools are
used for food processing, although chimpanzees also use tools for other purposes, such
as wiping debris from their bodies. Primatologists have compiled detailed lists of
innovations (Reader & Laland, 2001, 2002). Most innovations are linked to foraging,
but there are some exceptions. For example, Perry (2011) has documented a number of
novel social behaviors in white-faced capuchins, such as tail-sucking, or inserting
fingers in others’ eyes, mouth, or nostrils.
As the social brain hypothesis implies, monkeys have well developed knowledge
about the other members of their group (reviewed in Seyfarth & Cheney, 2012). They
recognize other group members as individuals, and know something about their own
kinship and dominance relationships to other group members. Observational studies and
experimental playback studies conducted on several haplorhine primates indicate that
they also know something about the kinds of relationships that exist among others,
which is referred to as third-party knowledge. Third-party knowledge extends to kinship
relationships (Cheney & Seyfarth 1980, 1986, 1989; Kitchen, et al., 2005), dominance
relationships (Silk, 1999; Perry, et al., 2004; Slocombe & Zuberbühler, 2007), and
relationship quality (Bachmann & Kummer, 1980; Perry, et al., 2004, 2008; Wittig &
Boesch, 2010).
Communication and individual recognition in primate groups involve a combination
of olfactory, visual, and auditory modalities. Olfactory signals play a role in sexual
behavior, mate choice, territorial defense, individual and species recognition, mother-
infant bonding, and foraging (Zuberbühler, 2012). Scent marking behavior occurs in
strepsirrhine primates and some New World monkeys, and some of them anoint
themselves with urine and other scented matter. In some strepsirrhine primates, mates
with heterozygous or dissimilar MHC alleles are preferred (Western fat-tailed dwarf
lemur and grey mouse lemur, M. murinus, Schwensow, et al., 2008a,b) and this infor-
mation may also affect mate choice decisions in haplorhines (Setchell & Huchard, 2010;
but see Huchard, et al., 2010 for chacma baboons). Visual signals, including facial
expressions and gestures, also play important roles in primates, particularly the
monkeys and apes. Facial expressions are highly uniform across individuals, develop
early in life, and appear in individuals reared in isolation, suggesting that they are under
strong genetic control (Arbib, et al., 2008). The diversity of visual signals in primates
may be related to the extent of social complexity. A phylogenetic analysis of 12
haplorhine primate species showed that the number of facial expressions are positively
associated with group size (Dobson, 2009), a crude measure of social complexity. Vocal
communication has been studied more intensively than visual or olfactory signals, in
part because vocalizations lend themselves to acoustic analyses of structure and experi-
mental analyses of meaning. Some primates produce a range of acoustically distinct call
types that are used in specific contexts, such as predator detection, foraging, and socio-
sexual interactions. The size of call repertoires is correlated with two measures of social
complexity: group size and the percentage of time spent grooming (McComb &
Semple, 2005). Anecdotal evidence indicates that primates may use vocal signals
deceptively to gain strategic advantages (Byrne & Whiten, 1990; Gouzoules, et al.,
1996), much as some avian species do (Munn, 1986; Møller, 1990).

9.6.3 Fecundity
Some strepsirrhine primates give birth to twins and occasionally triplets (van Schaik &
Isler, 2012). Most of the haplorhine primates typically produce singletons, but coopera-
tively breeding callitrichids consistently produce litters of two or three infants. In
general, larger-bodied species have longer gestation periods and wean their infants later
than smaller-bodied species, and fertility rates are thus inversely related to body size
(van Schaik & Isler, 2012).
9.6.5 Dispersal
In all group living primate species, members of one or both sexes disperse from
their natal groups as they reach the age of sexual maturity (Pusey, 1987). As in a
number of other mammalian taxa, the primary function of dispersal in primates
seems to be inbreeding avoidance (Pusey, 1987; Pusey & Wolf, 1996). Dispersal by
members of both sexes is characteristic of pair-bonded primates, and is the ancestral
pattern for primates living in larger social groups (Schülke & Ostner, 2012).

In species that are characterized by dispersal by only one sex, male dispersal
and female philopatry are considerably more common than female dispersal
and male philopatry. The male bias in dispersal is generally attributed to the
benefits that philopatric females gain from forming alliances with kin (Wrangham,
1980).

Ateles belzebuth (Di Fiore, 2009; Di Fiore, et al., 2009). Similar patterns characterize a
range of mammal and bird species (Lukas, et al., 2005).
Group fission may increase the degree of relatedness within groups if groups divide
along genetic lines. Groups sometimes divide along matrilineal lines in macaques
(Missakian, 1973; Chepko-Sade & Sade, 1979; Dittus, 1988; Ménard & Vallet, 1993;
Kuester & Paul, 1997; Koyama, 2003; Widdig, et al., 2006), olive baboons, Papio
anubis (Nash, 1976), wedge-capped capuchins, Cebus olivaceus (Robinson, 1988), and
ring-tailed lemurs, Lemur catta (Ichino, 2006; Ichino & Koyama, 2006), and genetic
studies indicate that relatedness within groups is sometimes higher after fission (Che-
verud, et al., 1978; Olivier, et al., 1981; Van Horn, et al., 2007). However, female-
bonded groups do not always fission cleanly along matrilineal lines (Melnick & Kidd,
1983; Ron, 1996; Widdig, et al., 2006; Van Horn, et al., 2007; Cords, 2012), and the
genetic consequences of fission may be less pronounced in these cases.
High reproductive skew, which is characteristic of many primate groups (reviewed by
Alberts, 2012) is also expected to influence the genetic structure of groups and may
influence the patterning of social behavior. As Altmann (1979) originally pointed out,
when there is high male skew in multi-male groups and individual males monopolize
reproduction for relatively short periods of time, members of the same birth cohort are
likely to be paternal half siblings and age proximity may be an accurate proxy for
paternal relatedness. In some taxa, females selectively associate with paternal half-
siblings (rhesus macaques, Schülke, et al., 2013; Widdig, et al., 2001, 2002, 2006;
yellow baboons, Silk, et al., 2006, Smith, et al., 2003; mandrills, Mandrillus sphinx,
Charpentier, et al., 2007), while in others paternal siblings are not preferred partners
(white-faced capuchins, Perry, et al., 2008; sun-tailed monkeys, Cercopithecus solatus,
Charpentier, et al., 2008).
Primates are eminently social creatures. In the vast majority of species, individuals are
permanently associated with at least one conspecific of the opposite sex. They exhibit
virtually all mating systems known from other vertebrates and they have multiple
differentiated social relationships that can extend over decades. Sociality is best

explained as a response to predation risk, but variation in the size and composition of
social groups is probably linked to both phylogenetic history and ecological conditions.
Because virtually all haplorhine primates live in stable social groups, and the solitary
strepsirrhines are harder to study and less well-known, it is difficult to draw strong
conclusions about the impact of sociality within the primate order. However, according
to proponents of the social brain hypothesis, primates living in larger groups have
relatively larger brains than species living in smaller groups, and relative brain size is, in
turn, linked to several proxies of social complexity. This suggests that selective
pressures favoring increases in group size have also favored the development of more
complex cognition, but the causal arrows could be reversed. Animals that evolved
relatively large brains to solve ecological problems might be better able to cope with
the challenges of living in larger groups.
With their large brains and close phylogenetic relationship to humans, there has been a
strong tendency to think of primates as “exceptional” animals. This is at least partly
because many primatologists are trained in anthropology or psychology programs, and
are prone to think of primates in terms of their similarities to humans, not their
similarities to other animals. Researchers from the biological sciences tend to avoid
studying primates because they live too long to measure important variables such as
lifetime fitness, are not readily amenable to most types of field experiments, and they are
difficult (and expensive) to bring into the laboratory. As a consequence, the primate
literature is not fully integrated with the larger literature in behavioral ecology even
though we rely on a common body of theory. Primate researchers are often criticized (or
gently mocked) by biologists for their insularity and their penchant for publishing in
taxon-specific journals and attending taxon-specific conferences.
Claims of primate exceptionalism are progressively harder to defend in the face of
evidence that many traits that were thought to be unique to primates, and closely tied to
their large brains and sophisticated cognitive abilities, can be found in other taxa. Thus,
a variety of organisms use tools or construct elaborate structures (Hansell, 2007).
Corvids have well-developed social cognition (Clayton, et al., 2007), fish display social
learning (Brown & Laland, 2003), and meerkats, Suricata suricatta, teach immatures
how to handle dangerous prey (Thornton & McAuliffe, 2006). All of these capacities
are found within the primate order, but not all have yet been found within any single
primate species.
Claims of primate exceptionalism would be justified if primates followed different
“rules” than other organisms, or constituted exceptions to well-established patterns of
adaptation. There is not much evidence that this is the case. For example, the sexually

selected infanticide hypothesis, which was originally developed to explain male behav-
ior in primate groups, seems to apply to a wide range of mammalian taxa (Hrdy &
Hausfater, 1984). Similarly, the link between sexual dimorphism and intrasexual
selection seems to follow the same patterns in primates as it does in pinnipeds,
ungulates, carnivores, and birds (Alexander, et al., 1979; Rubenstein & Lovette, 2009).
More recently, researchers have begun to examine the generality of the social brain
hypothesis, which was originally developed to explain the evolution of large brains and
expansion of the neocortex in primates. As in primates, brain size is positively associ-
ated with group size in dolphins (Marino, 1996), carnivores (Peréz-Barbería, et al.,
2007; Dunbar & Bever, 2010), ungulates (Peréz-Barbería, et al., 2007), and some
groups of insectivores (Dunbar & Bever, 2010). However, there are hints that the
selective forces influencing the relationship between brain and group size may operate
differently in primates than in other orders. Evolutionary transitions from solitary to
pair-living are associated with an increase in brain size in bats, artiodactyl ungulates,
and carnivores, as well as in birds (Emery, 2004; Emery, et al., 2007; Shultz & Dunbar,
2007). However, in these taxa, pair-living species have larger brains than species living
in larger groups. Primates represent a conspicuous exception to this pattern: pair-living
primates have smaller brains in relation to body size than those that live in larger
groups.
To explain the variation in the relationship between group size, pair-living, and
relative brain size across taxa, it may be important to consider the characteristics of
relationships that animals form, not just the size of the groups in which they live
(Holekamp, 2007). Evolution may have favored increases in brain size in pair-living
mammals and birds in response to the cognitive demands of closely coordinating daily
activities and movements and resolving conflicts of interest that arise among pair-
bonded partners (Emery, et al., 2007; Shultz & Dunbar, 2007). In most mammals and
birds, larger social units are less stable and less tightly coordinated, and may impose
weaker cognitive demands on group members. Shultz & Dunbar (2007) suggest that
“. . .individuals in transitory groups may not need to invest in cognitive resources for
cataloguing previous experiences (or identifying cheats), judging relative resource
holding potential, manipulating the behavior of other individuals or recognizing related-
ness.” Using crude proxies for social bonding among females (i.e. time devoted to social
activity, female philopatry, or formation of stable kin groups), Shultz & Dunbar (2007)
found no differences between pair-living primates and pair-living ungulates. However,
monkeys and apes that live in larger social units are much more likely to form “bonded”
groups than ungulates or carnivores, and also devote more time to social activity than
ungulates do.
In summary, it is possible that (some) primates differ from (most) other mammals
and birds in their capacity to form stable bisexual social units, establish social bonds
that extend beyond mates and immature offspring, and maintain extended social

networks. Primate cognition seems well designed to cope with the opportunities and
challenges of social life: identifying kin, choosing allies, remembering past inter-
actions, monitoring rank and reproductive status, tracking third party relationships,
perceiving others’ intentions, and so on. Moreover, in some primate species, the
quality of social bonds is associated with fitness outcomes (reviewed by Silk, 2012).
It is not yet clear whether primates are unique in the capacity to form these kinds
of extended connections. Spotted hyenas, Crocuta crocuta, seem uncannily like
baboons in their social lives (Holekamp, 2007), and associations between social
relationships and female fitness have been found in several other mammalian taxa,
including horses, Equus equus (Cameron, et al., 2009), bottlenose dolphins,
Tursiops truncates (Frère, et al., 2010), and house mice, Mus musculus (Weidt,
et al., 2008). It may turn out to be the case that the patterns that we see in primates
may also characterize a wide range of large-brained, long-living animals that live in
stable groups. Thus, primates may be among a select group of exceptional animals,
in which natural selection has favored complex sociality.
