ABSTRACT
Since last few years, the demand for electrical energy & its application has risen exponentially. And in that, a
large fraction of electricity consumption in street lights in the streets, highways and roads. In developing
countries and undeveloped countries (African countries) the street lighting system is managed manually &
taken local government representation and municipalities. Due to this sometimes or mostly the lights are ON
before sunset and are switch OFF in next day noon or morning. Some places use automated time setting for
street lighting. These all systems somehow results in power loss. A proper solution with efficiency in energy
consumption is to use a fully automated efficient energy system which runs only when these is absolutes
darkness and movement of vehicles or human or any physical body across on area. To detect day or night in
such system, use of LDR is preferred and use of Arduino microcontroller is preferred to control the system.
Ultrasonic sensor used as a vehicle detector which will a signal send to Arduino which will inturn, control the
intensity of LED. This would reduce power consumption, maintenance, heat loss along with CO2 emission. Thus,
The sole purpose of this system is to design a power saving fully automated and efficient street lighting system
and smart.
Keywords: Arduino UNO, Ultrasonic Sensor, LDR Sensor.
I. INTRODUCTION
In most of the world today, street light system use embedded brightness sensors to operate it. They are
automatically ON when it becomes dark and behaves opposite in complete brightness. Such modes contribute
to a heavy amount of power loss and need to be replaced with more efficient ones. Sometimes, this sensor light
turns on exclusively when the motion is spotted in front of the concerned street light along with darkness in
that area. However, it latency poses a major problem on these is practically on sense of turning on the light
when it is in front of the vehicle we, therefore, propose a lightning system which turns on for upcoming moving
bodies to guide them through and turn off when they pass by.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
Researchers have been proposing few better alternatives and approaches for the same problem. Prof. K. Y.
Rajput et. al [5] proposed smart street light system based on GSM technique. The technique is an intelligent
lighting system which cuts down energy waste remarkable and its “autonomous working mode” makes it a
tremendously efficient and economical alternative and solution for sreet lighting problems. This system works
on two LDR sensors in which one has the role of day night status sensing and another one is deviced to check
the lamp health status. The GSM module gathers the data on their serves. Sindhu. A.M et. al [7] implemented
Smart Street light system which use motion sensors to reduce the power consumption in the absence of vehicle
movements. Also Reinhard Mu¨ llner et. al [8] stated an efficiently working energy saving pedestrian aware
street lighting system for the dynamic switching. PIR adjusts the intensity of light by detecting movement of
pedestrian‟s and vehicle and street light adopts low brightness in the absence of movement. Parkash et. al[10]
implemented the smart system which controls the street lights using spotting of vehicles or any concerned
object within the specified time limit. Thus PIR and LDR runs on spotting the obstacles and light intensity at
particular concerned place. Throughout the day and transmits the gathered data and to the EB section through
Zigbee in wireless. Deepak Kumar Rath [11] states an LDR based smart street light system which ON/OFF
automatically and control the liht intensity. Soledad Escolar et. al [13] states a multiphase based light sources to
adopt their intensity as per the conditions of environment. The design given was able to adopt dynamically to
the presence or absence of obstacles and light of surroundings by comparing the estimate of their system with
unadaptive system and it was found to be 35% more efficient than it.

III. PROPOSED METHODOLOGY
The proposed system by using Arduino, ultrasonic sensor and LDR is designed to detect day or night whereas
ultrasonic sensor is used to detect motion of obstacles in the periphery of LED in street. When LDR detect
light(day) then LED will remain OFF. Second situation is that LDR detect darkness(night) and also movement
detect by ultrasonic sensor then LED will switch ON. Third situation is that when LDR detect darkness(night)
and no movement detect in front of LED then LED will switch DIM. Components are required to design system
such as Arduino, Jumper Wires, LDR, Bread Board, ultrasonic (Movement Detection Sensor). flow chart is as
shown below.

IV. RESULT AND DISCUSSION

In this section we are discussed about this system step by step the circuit was designed by using above
mentioned electrical components. The program is written with the use of Arduino. If there is day with motion
or no motion then light is in OFF condition. 0 voltage drop across LED Shown in fig. This means LED is on OFF
condition. The circuit diagram is depicted below. Fig.01

Fig 01
If there is lack of light(night) along with absence of motion, the Light is in ON(DIM). Voltage drop across LED is
increase approx. 600MV. This means user can see it from considerable distance. As shown in fig.02

If there is Dark and Motion detected then the LED is in Switched ON with full intensity. Voltage drop across
LED is approx. (2V). this LED is ON condition. As shown in fig.03

V. CONCLUSION
This system verifies nature light condition and motion detection. Street light is ON/OFF when needed. wastage
of electricity is reduced. The system has scope in different other sector like giving lighting in industries and
factories. campuses and parking lots of huge shopping malls. This can also be used for surveillance in corporate
campuses and industries. This project is a cost effective, practical, practically, eco-friendly is saving energy.
