THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT

IN THE UNITED STATES

PART I: FROM LINCOLN TO MLK

THE PROCLAMATION OF EMANCIPATION

This document is a black and white picture. The title of this document is

«Freedom for all both blacks and whites ».

In the foreground, in the middle, a man is standing up. The man is raising his

right hand. He is wearing a fancy black suit, a white shirt, black pants, a black

bow tie and black shoes. He is holding a paper in his left hand.

Around the man, there are white people on the left and black people on the right.

They are wearing poor clothes and they are begging/ are praying for freedom and

mercy. There is a black family with a baby.

At the bottom, there are some opened handcuffs and a book.

In the background, there is a school with a flag saying «Education to all classes ».

The man standing up is Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United

States. The paper he is holding is the Proclamation of Emancipation two years

before the abolition of slavery. This is a promise of freedom for slaves. Abraham

Lincoln looks like a hero, he looks courageous/ bold / brave and determined. He

seems proud and reassuring.

The people around Abraham Lincoln are slaves. They are miserable and desperate.

They are asking for help and freedom.

The opened handcuffs represent the end of slavery.

Maybe / Perhaps the book is a Bible.

The school in the background represents equality between blacks and whites.

To conclude, Lincoln embodies hope for former slaves.

This document is a black and white photograph.

In the foreground, there is a black man. He is wearing a fancy black suit, a

white shirt, a black jacket and a striped tie. The man has got a decoration on his

jacket. The man looks/ seems optimistic, confident and reassuring.

In the background, I can see a huge (= very big) and impressive marble statue.

It represents Abraham Lincoln. The statue looks serious and authoritarian

( almost disdainful). Behind, above the statue, there are writings.

In the middle-distance, there are flowers.

Firstly, The black man in the foreground is Martin Luther King Jr. He fought

against segregation during the 1960s. He wanted equality between black people

and white people. He was a Civil Rights activist.

Then, the statue in the background represents the American president Abraham

Lincoln. He is very famous because he abolished slavery in 1865. He was

assassinated in 1865.

MLK is in front of this statue because they both wanted equality between blacks

and whites.

To conclude, Martin Luther King pays a tribute to Lincoln because he is his

successor.
