Mixed Conditionals

Normally two parts of a conditional sentence is in the same tense.


If I had been absent, I wouldn't have seen you. - Past Tense
If I were absent, I wouldn't see you. - Present Tense

Quick reminder:
Past Unreal – If – Past Perfect, would have – Verb 3 /3rd conditional/
Present (Future) Unreal – If – Past Simple, would – Verb 1 /2nd conditional/

Sometimes two parts of a conditional sentence may be in two


different tenses.

If I hadn't called Tom yesterday, he would come today.

If+ past perfect, would+ Verb 1


[The first part is in the past, the other part is in the present]

If I were healthy, I would have gone to Tom's with you yesterday.

If+ past simple, would have + verb 3


[The first part is in the present, the other part is in the past]
