Assignment Sheet #3: Friction Analysis in Machines

1. Beam AB is subjected to a uniform load of 200
N/m and is supported at B by post BC. If the
coefficients of static friction at B and C are 𝝁𝐁 =
0.2 and 𝝁𝐂 = 0.5, determine the force P needed to
pull the post out from under the beam. Neglect the
weight of the members and the thickness of the
beam.

2. A clamp is used to hold two pieces of wood together as shown. The

clamp has a double square thread with a mean diameter of 10 mm
and a pitch of 2 mm. The coefficient of friction between threads is μs
= 0.30. If a maximum couple of 40 N·m is applied in tightening the
clamp, determine (a) the force exerted on the pieces of wood, (b) the
couple required to loosen the clamp.

3. A pulley having a diameter of 80 mm and mass of 1.25 kg is supported loosely

on a shaft having a diameter of 20 mm. Determine the torque M that must be
applied to the pulley to cause it to rotate with constant motion. The
coefficient of kinetic friction between the shaft and pulley is µk=0.4. Also
calculate the angle θ which the normal force at the point of contact makes
with the horizontal. The shaft itself cannot rotate.

4. The cylinder is subjected to a load that has a weight W. If the

coefficients of rolling resistance for the cylinder’s top and bottom
surfaces are aA and aB, respectively, show that a horizontal force
having a magnitude of is required to move
the load and thereby roll the cylinder forward. Neglect the weight
of the cylinder.
