Activity 1
Directions: Read and analyze the following problems. Answer them properly.

1) Using Ohms Law, calculate the equivalent series resistance, the series current, voltage
drop and power for each resistor in the following resistors in series circuit.

Current Resistance
𝑉 R total= R1 + R2 + R3
Ι=
𝑅
12𝑉 R total= 10Ω + 20Ω + 30Ω
𝐼=
60𝛺
R total= 60Ω
𝐈 = 𝟎. 𝟐𝐀

Voltage Power
V total= 12V P 1= (Ιtotal)2 R1
P1=(0.2A)2 (10Ω)
V1= Ι total R1 P1=(0.04 A2) (10Ω)
V1=(0.2A) (10Ω) P1= 0.4W
V1= 2V
P2=(Ιtotal)2 R2
V2=Ιtotal R2 P2=(0.2A)2 (20Ω)
V2=(0.2 A) (20Ω) P2=(0.04 A2) (20Ω)
V2= 4V P2= 0.8W

V3=Ιtotal R3 P3=(Ιtotal)2 R3
V3=(0.2 A) (30Ω) P3=(0.2 A)2 (30Ω)
V3= 6V P3= (0.04 A2) (30Ω)
P3= 1.2 W

P total= P1=P2
P total=0.04W + 0.08 W= 1.2 W
P total= 2.4 W

2. Find the total resistance, RT of the following resistors connected in a parallel network.
R total= 1
1 1 1
+ +
R1 R2 R3

R total= 1
1 1 1
+ +
200Ω 470Ω 220Ω

R total= 85.67Ω

Activity 2
A capacitor is fully charged to 10 volts. Calculate the RC time constant, τ of the following RC discharging
circuit when the switch is first closed.

𝑇 = (𝑅)( 𝐶)
𝑇 = 100 𝑘 𝑥22 𝑢𝐹
𝑇 = 2.2 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠
a) What value will be the voltage across the capacitor at 0.7 time constants?

𝑉0.7 = 𝑉𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒(𝑉𝐶)
𝑉0.7 = (0.497)(10𝑉)
𝑉0.7 = 4.97𝑉 𝑜𝑟 5𝑉

b) What value will be the voltage across the capacitor after 1 time constant?

𝑉1.0 = 𝑉𝑃𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑔𝑒(𝑉𝐶)
𝑉1.0 = (0.366)(10𝑉)
𝑉1.0 = 3 .66𝑉 𝑜𝑟 3.7𝑉

c) How long will it take for the capacitor to “fully discharge” itself, (equal to 5 time

constants)

𝑇 = 2.2 𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠
(𝑇)(5) = (2.2𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠)(5)
5𝑇 = 11𝑆𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑠

B. When computing complex circuits, why is it advisable to use Kirchhoff’s Rules?

Kirchhoff's laws play an important role in the analysis of closed circuits. Consider the
following circuit, which consists of five resistors connected in a series and parallel configuration.
It is difficult to reduce this circuit to a combination of series and parallel connections. However,
using Kirchhoff's laws, one may evaluate the circuit and use the resistor values to calculate the
circuit's characteristics.
