Lesson Idea Name: President’s Day

Grade Level/Content Area: Kindergarten/ Social Studies

Content Standard Addressed: SSKH1 Identify the national holidays and describe the people and/or
events celebrated.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner – 1.1.a. Students articulate able to do by the end of this lesson: My students
and set personal learning goals, develop strategies should be able to tell me who is celebrated on
leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on Presidents’ Day and why we celebrate the day.
the learning process itself to improve learning
outcomes.

What is the student learning goal(s) for this lesson idea? The student should be able to maneuver
through the lesson and respond to the questions given to them. They should be able to get to each
video and website provided so that they can get the material needed for the lesson.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

X Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the
student and mostly practice based.

X Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic
of learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The
teacher facilitates the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based (Real world problems) and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems
and completing projects to demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared
outside of the classroom. (Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the
school’s morning newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another
class, or publishing it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation: The lesson will move students through multiple different videos and
websites aimed to teach them more about Presidents Day. While moving between these different
sites they will be asked questions pertaining to what they have either watched or learned. This will
make sure the students stay engaged while also having them learn the material. The lesson will

conclude with asking the students to summarize what they have learned so they may reflect on all
they have taken in.
Managing student learning: This lesson should help students become active learners as they set the
pace of their learning and can choose how they answer the tasks at hand. However, to keep the
students within a set time limit I would set a timer up on the board for 30-40 minutes, this is the
time they must complete the assignment within. But also, I would write a recommended timetable
on the board to give them an idea of how long they should spend on each portion at the most. This
will help keep them on track, but also verbally checking in to see where students are halfway
through will let me as an educator know if they are moving along as they should. Also because this is
a Padlet on my board I will be able to track the progress of each student to find where they have
reached throughout their work time.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): I think engagement is really supported through this lesson as
there are so many kinds of online tools used to help the students learn. I also have made it so the
students can choose how they want to answer a question, whether by typing, voice, video, or other.
This gives them a choice at representation and expression in the assignment.

Reflective Practice: I think this tool will help students interact with each other and build off one
another as they can see their fellow students’ responses. Some students may find they have found a
different understanding than their fellow peers and will be able to learn more from each other. I
think I look forward to how students will interact with this lesson and see if they like it or not.
