Network Adress

What is network addressing? a fundamental system that assigns unique identifiers to each device
on a network.

How do network addresses work? When a user connects to the internet, their ISP assigns them an
address from within one of the blocks assigned to it.

Why is network address important? allows two machines to identify each other and to talk to each
other, exchanging data on the Internet.

What is the network address translation? the process of mapping an internet protocol (IP) address
to another by changing the header of IP packets while in transit via a router.

What is a subnet mask? a number that distinguishes the network address and the host address
within an IP address.

What is a 255.255 255.0 subnet mask? 32 bits and consists of four 8-bit octets.

What is the benefits of subnetting? gives network administrators better control over their computer
networks, including traffic, data packets, subnets, and routers.

What is IPv4 subnet mask? identify the range of IP addresses that make up a subnet, or group of
IP addresses on the same network.

What is IPv6 subnet mask? IPv6 doesn't have a subnet mask

Network address can be of one of the following:

• Unicast (destined to one host) Unicast addresses are what you would call regular addresses.
They are the addresses usually bound to your network card. Unicast addresses should be
unique on a network, meaning a single unicast address should only represent a single system.
Multicast addresses are used to make a one-to-many connection.

• Multicast (destined to group) A multicast group is a set of receivers interested in receiving a

particular set of data traffic. The hosts interested in receiving the data flow must join the group
using the Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP).

• Broadcast (destined to all)

Broadcasting is the distribution of information via an electronic medium from a single source to a wide-
spread audience. This one-to-many style of information disbursement, also called broadcast media,
usually comprises audio and video content. • Anycast (destined to nearest one) Anycast is a network
addressing and routing method in which incoming requests can be routed to a variety of different
locations or “nodes.” In the context of a CDN, Anycast typically routes incoming traffic to the nearest data
center with the capacity to process the request efficiently.
