Role play daily life situations

 Card 1- Person 1 Card 1- Person 2

You are in a restaurant with a friend who does not speak English. Your friend You are a server in a French restaurant and are very busy. You want to take
is really allergic to all milk products and needs help asking about the the order for a table as fast as possible. Remember to ask about: appetizers,
ingredients of the different dishes. drinks and the main course.
You must ask the server what your friend can eat that has no milk products in
it (butter, cream, cheese etc.). Choose something for your friend to eat and
also place your order with drinks.

Card 2- Person 1 Card 2- Person 2

You are trying to call your friend’s new phone. The number is: 06 56 89 93
34. When the person picks up, you realize that it is not your friend. You
must be polite and kindly ask the other person what their phone number
was. You must repeat the phone number to them and thank them for their
help.
You are a very lonely elderly person who often forgets things. You get an
unknown caller on your phone who is looking for someone else. You must
ask if they know your grandson “James”. When the person asks you what
your phone number is, you must tell them that it is written in the kitchen on
your calendar and ask them to wait. You must try to make them stay on the
phone with you. Your phone number is 06 53 89 63 34.

Card 3- Person 1 Card 3- Person 2

You would like to rent a car for 4 days from February 9-12. You must call the
car rental agency and ask about their prices. You must ask for: a small
economy car, basic insurance and second driver insurance. Remember to ask
how much it will cost and to ask the car rental agent to clearly repeat all the
final information to you.
You work at a car rental agency. There is a promotion in the month of
February for Land Rover rentals and you receive a bonus if you rent them.
When the customer calls you must ask them what kind of car they want,
what days, what pick-up and drop-off times, what kind of insurance, their
information (name, address, credit card number). Remember to try and push
the Land Rover offer. Give the client a final price.
 Card 4- Person 1
It is May and you are an exchange student in Canada but will go back to your home
country in a couple of days. You have had a special Canadian friend who you really
like but are not in love with. When you go back home, you do not want to stay in a
couple with this person. The person is really nice so you don’t want to hurt them
but you do not like long distance relationships.
You must tell the person nicely that you will not stay together after you leave.
Apologize to them and try to convince the person that you would stay together if
you could…but you cannot. Promise to write to them, email them, telephone, chat
online… Suggest that they visit you in your country during the December vacation
(but you don’t really want them to come).
Card 5- Person 1
You are a veterinarian and someone has brought their dog to your clinic because it
was a little sick. The dog looked like another dog that was supposed to be put to
sleep (to die). You made a mistake and killed the wrong dog. You must tell the
owner that their dog died even though he was not very sick. You must ask the
person for some information about the dog (name, what kind of dog, age etc) to
complete a paper that the person has to sign. You cannot admit that the dog died
because of a mistake.
Card 6- Person 1
You are looking for a new apartment to rent and phone someone who put an ad in a
newspaper. You need to know:
The rent, the number of rooms, the number of windows, the size of the apartment,
if you can have pets (animals), if there is carpet, if the kitchen has a stove and
fridge, if the building has laundry facilities.
Card 4- Person 2
It is May and you are madly in love with the exchange student. You know that they
are leaving to go home soon but you do not want them to go back to their country.
You want to stay together forever.
You must ask them a lot of questions about their feelings and how they feel about
you. Ask them what they will write to you. Try to convince the person to stay with
you for the summer and that if they leave it will be a mistake. If they say no, insist
that you will come to visit the person for three weeks during the summer.
Card 5- Person 2
You forgot to close your fridge door and your dog ate all the cheese and butter that
was in the fridge. He was very sick because of that so you took him to the vet. He is
a young and healthy dog normally but you want to be sure that he will be okay.
You LOVE your dog and he is your only friend in the world. You cannot live without
him and his cute little bark (Woof! Woof!). When you come back to the vet, you
must ask the vet how the dog is and if he is okay. There is something wrong with
your dog. You must become very dramatic and emotional. Explain to the vet how
important the dog is to you. Ask the vet what happened, when, why, how…
Card 6- Person 2
You are a landlord renting out an apartment. The rent is $300/month. There are
two bedrooms, a kitchen, one living room and a bathroom with a shower only. It is
a big apartment. No pets are allowed because it is carpeted. There is a stove in the
kitchen. There are washing machines in the basement of the building. The deposit
is first and last month’s rent ($600).
 Card 7- Person 1
You have an obsession with dreams. You believe that your dreams are
messages that tell you what you should do in the future. You decided to get
a tattoo on your shoulder because it was a message from a dream. You
realize that you need to see a psychologist because it is becoming a problem.
You must describe your dream to the psychologist using the words: spoon,
yellow, shoe, fire, pink and the sound “o-wa-wa-kie”.
Card 8 - Person 1
You are on vacation in Australia and go on a tour for $100. Unfortunately,
the guide drives you up an empty road and takes all your money, passports
and credit cards. He leaves you there alone and you have a problem with a
kangaroo. You must go to the Australian police and file a report about the
man. The man called himself Jason Kroft and his company “Down Under and
Around Tours”. Your passport number is AF678H5RP. Tell the police that a
kangaroo attacked you and bit you. Ask if you need medical attention. Tell
the police you are scared.
Card 9 – Person 1
You have a new boyfriend/girlfriend who you will introduce to your family. Your
family situation is a little complicated and you need to explain it to the other
person. Your mother and father are divorced and your mother has remarried your
uncle who is divorced from your father’s sister. You mother and stepfather have a
daughter now who is your half sister. Your stepfather/old uncle had one child from
his first marriage so he is your cousin/stepbrother and also the half brother of your
half sister. The mother’s name is Julia, the stepfather’s name is Rick, the father is
Tim, the half sister is Kim and the stepbrother/cousin is Patrick.
Card 7- Person 2
You are a psychologist and have a client who has serious problems with their
dreams. You must ask the client to describe their last dream. Ask them what
they think the dream means and what the colours represent. Suggest that
they keep a dream journal that they write in when they wake up. Plan a
meeting together next week.
Card 8- Person 2
You are a police officer who takes reports. You have a tourist who has come
into your office. Ask the person what happened and ask for a description of
the robber (hair and eye colour, age, height, name or any other information).
Ask for their passport number and personal information. Ask about how
long they will stay in Australia.
Card 9- Person 2
You are going to meet your boyfriend/girlfriend’s family for the first time.
The family situation is very confusing but you really want to understand who
is who. You must ask about the family and try to repeat it back to be sure
that you understand.
