Lesson ONLINE PLATFORMS
AND SITES

INTRODUCTION

Hello Senior High! In this lesson you will learn to:

• Compare and contrast the nuances of varied online platforms, sites, and content to best
achieve specific class objectives or address situational challenges.

Before we begin, consider the following questions: How many times have you checked
your phone this morning? How many status changes did you make on Facebook or Twitter? Did
you spend an hour on the internet after you woke up this morning? Do you follow any celebrity
on social media?

If you answered "guilty as charged" to the most of these questions, you are most likely a
digital native. And chances are, you have been surrounded by information and communication
technology since you were born.

LESSON AND PRACTICES

According to the AIMS website, “there is no commonly agreed definition of ICT exists”.
Why? Because ICT is fast changing. It evolves constantly almost in a daily basis in terms of its
concepts, methods, and devices. Some communication tools are already phased out and new
ones is trending. For example, no tele company used telegraphy today and old typewriters are
almost phased out.

Yuvienco (2016) state that “Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is an

umbrella term that includes any communication device or application” (Yuvienco, 2016, p.7)

UNESCO (2021) define ICT as “Diverse set of technological tools and resources used to
transmit, store, create, share or exchange information.”

Current ICT Technological Tools and Resources

1. Computers and Software Apps

2. Wireless Networks
3
3. Internet (websites, blogs and emails)
4. Social Media Apps
5. Live broadcasting technologies (radio, television and webcasting)
6. Recorded broadcasting technologies (podcasting, audio and video players and
storage devices)
7. Telephony (fixed or mobile, satellite, video-conferencing).

The most important information system in ICT that allows users to benefit from the
services of the online platforms and websites is World Wide Web. Without the World Wide Web
you cannot open or publish a website on the internet. It is also known as Web. Every website can
be located through their Uniform Resource Locator or URL such as https://www.anywebsite.com.
The first version of the Web was called Web 1.0, a “static web”, which means, you can only read
text and look at the pictures but you cannot interact with them. It is also called “flat page” and
“stationary page”. World Wide Web is a platform that can run online platforms.

The Current State of ICT

1. Web 2.0 - Dynamic Web pages

• It facilitates interaction between web users and sites, so it allows users to interact
more freely with each other.
• It encourages participation, collaboration, and information sharing. Examples of Web
2.0 applications are Twitter, Facebook and YouTube.
• The user may see websites in a personalized way, such as in social networking sites,
wikis and video sharing sites.
• It allows users to interact with the page, comment or create a user account.
• Most website that we visit today are Web 2.0

2. Web 3.0 – Semantic Web

• Described as “The intelligent Web”

• In 2006, John Markoff of the New York Times define Web 3.0 as the third generation
of Internet-based services.
• One of the most fascinating aspects of Web 3.0 is that it allows AI (Artificial
Intelligence) to respond and to help internet users with inquiries sent as a screen
image, photo or text. Artificial intelligence on the web reacts to inquiries and human
input in areas such as mathematics, language, searching, gaming, and commerce.
• As a user interacts, reacts, participates, and collaborates on the web, a computer
language processes the context of the user's search in order to assist the user by
giving alternatives for what the person is interested in.

Online Platform

An online platform is a collection of technologies optimized for use in an online

environment and that enable the delivery of interactive online services. On the internet, online
platforms act as a conduit for information and communication flows. Additionally, they are critical
enablers of digital trade within the single market and the world. They expand customer choice
and convenience, boost industrial efficiency and competitiveness and potentially boost civic
participation. At the moment, online outlets include, but are not limited to:

4
1. Presentation/Visualization - use to share presentations, infographics, and videos with
others.

Examples:

A. Prezi - a well-known cloud-based platform for creating and tracking interactive

presentations. A huge library of templates on marketing, sales, business, education
themes, icons and images that can be edited right in the app. Plus, the drag-and-drop
feature makes adding smart structures to your presentation a breeze. Prezi has
developed a unique method of making presentations more engaging than traditional slide
presentations. The platform provides an open canvas for your entire presentation. You
can zoom in on different modules and points to reveal your story.

B. Google Slides - a presentation tool that you can use in your browser or download to your
PC. It has a library of cool themes, fonts, animation effects, video embedding, and more.
You need an account to use the Google presentation app. Beyond that, Google Slides is
simple and intuitive. Any browser with internet access can use the app. It even saves your
changes automatically and lets you view previous versions. Google Slides is very team
friendly. You can collaborate on the same presentation with other users in view, comment,
or edit mode. You can even chat and see other people's cursors change.

C. Slidebean – a platform that uses artificial intelligence to design for you. The software's
algorithms analyze your images and text to create optimal layouts and at the same time
saving you time. The software creates your content and outlines your presentation.
Moreover, it identifies the key elements and arranges your content accordingly without
human intervention. Slidebean lets you fully customize your slides. Other useful features
include multi-user real-time collaboration, activity tracking, and analytics.

D. Keynote - available on Mac, iOS, and iCloud.com. It includes over 30 thematic templates,
30 stunning cinematic transitions for your design elements, interactive charts and
animations, over 700 editable shapes, and more. Keynote allows your team to work on
the same presentation from anywhere in the world. On an iPad, you can use the Apple
Pencil to draw and write directly on your presentation template.

E. Slides - an open-source cloud-based presentation tool. It works on all devices, including

mobile phones. It has a feature that allows you to fully customize your slide decks. Slides
has a built-in media library that keeps your assets organized and accessible to your team.
You can also use vertical slides as sub-slides to your main slides to make your
presentation more informative. Because Slides is open source, it is completely developer-
friendly and allows you to fully customize your decks. Content from other devices can be
embedded into your presentation using HTML, CSS or JavaScript. It is easy to access
your presentations from any device and download them for offline use.

F. SlideDog - software that enables you to create multi-media presentations. This means
you can mix presentation formats like PowerPoint, Prezi, websites, media files, static
PDFs, and more. The app lets you add a live chat or discussion so your audience can
participate. You can also receive anonymous feedback, questions, and comments to
answer at your leisure.

5
