Lab 1 “Mud logging”

Deadline: Jan 24, 2024 (11 p.m.)

Verbal defense: Week 2 (Thursday)
Total: 2 points

REQUIRED READING:
1. L1_Conoco_Wellsite_Geologists_Manual.pdf

SUPPORTING MATERIAL:
1. Shell_Abbrev.pdf
2. Conoco_Abbrev.pdf

LAB EXERCISE MATERIAL:

1. L1_MUDLOG.pdf

NOTE:
1. In this lab you need to interpret the mud log.
2. Be sure that you use the supporting material in order to look up some of the lithological
abbreviations. Not all of the abbreviations are provided in those documents. Try to "un
code" at least 75% of the lithologic description for the lab exercise. It is a good exercise
since there is no standardized set of abbreviations, so understanding geology will help you
decipher the lithologic abbreviations without using a reference.
3. Remember that your labs are individual assignments.

TASK:
Use the provided mud log (L1_MUDLOG.pdf) to identify oil and/or gas shows with more
than 8% oil and/or gas in samples AND Total Gas reading above 15 units.
For your identified show, provide the depth interval and summarize some of the
information that is available (i.e. lithology, gas readings and drilling information) in un-
abbreviated form.
Write your results in the L1_Mudlog_Description_template.doc, save as a .pdf,
and submit through Teams by 11 p.m. on , Jan 24.

QUESTIONS:
1. Importance of drilling mud and mud filtrate;
2. What is mud logging?
3. What is a hot wire?
4. What information a gas chromatograph provides?
5. Mud log interpretation
