When I was young, my mom always told me that I needed to sleep a lot. As a child I
always wonder what's the reason behind it. When I ask older people about it, the most frequent
answer is that it is good for me and it will help me grow taller. But then, I still continue to
wonder what the different benefits of sleeping are.

Sleep is an important aspect for us humans. However, it has been overlooked especially
in our generation. Most people lack sleep sue to different factors. According to Sleep Foundation
(2024), sleep deprivation occurs when a person does not get at least seven hours of quality sleep
each night. Sleep deprivation may cause slowed thinking, reduced attention span, worsened
memory, poor or risky decision-making, lack of energy, and mood shifts. Sleep is very important
in maintaining good health. A good sleep is important for cognitive function and mental health.
During sleep, our body is working in order to support healthy brain function and maintain
physical health (National Institutes of health). Numerous brain processes, particularly the
communication between nerve cells, depend on sleep. Our body and brain are actually very
active while we sleep. According to recent researches, sleep has a cleanup function that clears
your brain from toxins that accumulate while we are aware.

Furthermore, getting enough sleep can reduce stress and improve mood. When people get
a good night’s rest, their body naturally reduces the levels of cortisol and other stress hormones.
Well-rested people have been shown to stay calmer and react less strongly to negative situations
the day after good night’s sleep (Everlywell Inc., 2024).
In conclusion, getting enough sleep is essential for general health and wellbeing. It is
necessary for maintaining mental, physical, and cognitive wellness. Sleep is vital for maintaining
a healthy lifestyle since it helps lower stress, elevate mood, and boost brain function.
