adjust parameters, diagnose components and troubleshoot circuits of the
truck.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to:

 Understand how to change parameters using PC Service Tool.

 Understand the process of creating reports using PC Service

Tool.

 Use PC Service Tool for troubleshooting circuits of the truck.

Skill Objectives

Launch PC Service Tool

Launch PC Service Tool by
selecting the shortcut on the
desktop. Input the User ID in
the dialogue box. If this is the
first time using PC Service Tool, the
user will also be required to enter the
password. If PC Service Tool has
been launched before, the Password
will populate automatically. After
entering the User ID, PC Service Tool
will open. From the File menu select
Connect and the Vehicle Connection
dialog box will open.

Connecting to a Truck
Connect the IFAK cable to the PC and to a truck. Use the drop down to select
the Vendor,
Device and Model
Code. The Model
Code designation
will be the first
four characters of
the lift truck serial
number. On
establishing a successful connection, the Fault Monitor screen will be displayed.
If any faults exist, this screen will display the Fault Code, the number of times the
fault has occurred and, the hour meter of the first and last occurrence.

Reports
Once the truck is connected, it’s a good practice
to create a report of how the truck is configured.
To do this, select “Reports” from the File menu
and the report generator screen will appear. The
report will include detailed truck information and
each parameter setting as well as any fault codes
that currently exist. The report has fields to enter
the technicians name and any comments
associated with the truck report. The report can
also be customized. By selecting the Diagnostic Data checkbox, the user can
select data from any
number of nodes to
include in the report.
The data selection is
similar to that of the
Custom Data Monitor.
This can be very useful
in identifying and
correcting problems
with the truck.

Diagnostic Data
The Diagnostic Data section of the
report allows you to pick items
specific to the area you are
troubleshooting. To select the data,
expand the items in the left window
and add the ones to be tracked to
the right window. Once completed,
you have the ability to save or print
the report. The default save location
will be the Truck Folder inside the
PCST Data folder on the desktop of
the PC.

Truck Information
The Truck Information menu shows the current configuration of the truck. This screen
shows each node’s
information such as the
Device, the Make of the
Device, the Hardware
Version, the software ID
and Device Serial
Number. It also shows
the accumulated hours
on each node. The
Software Enabled
Features window
identifies what options
are configured on the
truck. The truck
information screen is
accessed from the
Diagnostics menu.

Truck Setup
The truck’s parameter settings can be accessed from the Truck Configuration
menu. Select Truck Setup and a menu with five tabs across the top will appear.
The tabs are the four Performance Modes and the Settings tab. From the
Performance tabs, any of the truck’s performance characteristics can be adjusted
using the drop down menus next to the
parameter. Only items that are
configured on the truck will appear in the
window. The settings tab allows
miscellaneous features to be customized,

such as units displayed in metric or

standard, Battery type, BDI settings, etc.
Multiple items can be changed prior to
saving back to the truck. Select the

appropriate tab, and change the parameter settings. Once all of the changes are
made, they need to be saved back to the truck by selecting the Update Truck
button on the bottom of the setup window.

Custom Data Monitor

The Custom Data Monitor
allows the user to select
items to view on the screen
while operating the function.
The items will be displayed
along with their value and
the identification of the
value. For instance, Motor
Speed is displayed in RPM;
Motor Current is displayed
in Amps; and so on….

In the image above, both

the traction node and the pump node were monitored. The traction node
controller temperature was running at 77° Fahrenheit while the traction motor
temperature was 93° Fahrenheit. The capacitor voltage was also monitored and
reported 35.06 volts. The pump node reported its controller temperature at 75°
Fahrenheit and the motor amperage was not captured since the pump motor was
not activated. This can be a valuable tool for technicians diagnosing problems.
In “live mode” these values change as the system is operated, allowing the
technician to evaluate the information in “real-time”.

Strip Chart
The Strip Chart is similar to the Custom Data Monitor. The main difference is the
items chosen using the strip
chart are viewed graphically.
The screen acts much like a
digital oscilloscope with an X
and Y axis. The X and Y
axis represents value over
time. The strip chart allows
the user to record and play
back the events so they can
be analyzed more
thoroughly.
In this image of the Strip
Chart, three items were
graphed; Motor Speed
represented by the blue line;
Motor Current represented by the yellow line and Capacitor Voltage represented
by the red line. In evaluating this graph, it is apparent at the 29 second mark the

Capacitor voltage dropped to 1 volt. The Motor Current also dropped in

comparison.

The X and Y axis can be rescaled either before the graph is generated or they

can be rescaled on a saved graph to allow for more precise viewing. As you can
see on the Capacitor Volts graph on the left, the range has been edited from -2.5
volts to 40 volts.

The screen below shows the motor speed capture from 10 seconds to 40
seconds widening out the area between each segment to allow for a more
accurate view of the information.

You can also add a scroll bar that allows you to move along the X axis and watch
the values change as you move. The values will be displayed on the right hand
side of the display.

Programming
The PC Service Tool is also used to load a new Configuration Data File (CDF)
into the truck. Under the Programming, select Truck Programming and the
program needed to upload the CDF into the truck. The three programming
applications are packaged with PC
Service Tool and installed during
the PCST installation process. All
three programs are stand-alone
programs and can be launched
from the programs folder of the
computer. CDF’s are used to
update truck configurations and can
be acquired through the brand web
site. The CDF is serial number
specific and can only be used for
the truck serial number it is
developed for. Additional features
can be added to the CDF by NMHG if the customer has purchased additional
options.
