Slide 2:Queen Victoria did not succeed her uncle William I, but William IV.
Slide 3: She married her first cousin, German speaking Prince Albert.
She suffered seven assassination attempts even though she was loved by most people.
Some historians acknowledge eight attempts against her.
Slide 4:She lost her husband due to typhoid fever and wore black for the rest of her
existence.
Slide 5:It was preceded by the Regency Era and followed by the Edwardian Era.
Slide 6:It was full of contradictory changes, product of modernity and the development of a
liberal capitalist system.
Slide 7: The beginning was tainted by a general ideological uncertainty due to the
Republican revolutions throughout Europe.
Slide 8: A middle class appeared (neither rich nor poor) due to the shift from an agrarian
society to an industrial one.
Slide 9: In the countryside, salaries were better at the beginning. In the big cities, salaries
were very high.

the government.
Slide 11: It took inspiration on middle class lifestyle where women were an icon of chastity
and modesty.
Slide 12:Working women were considered inferior as the ideal for women was to be devoted
only to domestic life.
Slide 13: They had more responsibilities since they were responsible for the upbringing of
children and domestic work, besides having less paid jobs in some cases.
Slide 14: In 1872 women's suffrage gained momentum. It would become a national
movement with the formation of the National Society for Women's Suffrage.
Slide 20:By 1858 the stench of the Black River was so overwhelming that a system of
sewers started by the following year. (The Great Stink)
Slide 21: Miners had to cope with hazards regularly, including roof collapses and
explosions. Starting in 1851, inspectors recorded fatalities, and they found that respiratory
illnesses were common and that various illnesses plagued the mining population.
Slide 23:The Great Exhibition was organized by Henry Cole and Prince Albert, husband of
the reigning monarch, Queen Victoria.
Slide 25: New sports were created such as: cricket, cycling, horse-riding and water
activities.
