Element Description:
SOLID186 is a higher order 3-D 20-node solid element that exhibits quadratic displacement behavior.
The element is defined by 20 nodes having three degrees of freedom per node: translations in the nodal
x, y, and z directions. The element supports plasticity, hyperelasticity, creep, stress stiffening, large
deflection, and large strain capabilities. It also has mixed formulation capability for simulating
deformations of nearly incompressible elastoplastic materials, and fully incompressible hyperelastic
materials.

SOLID 186

Element Description:
SOLID186 is a higher order 3-D 20-node solid element that exhibits quadratic displacement behavior.
The element is defined by 20 nodes having three degrees of freedom per node: translations in the nodal
x, y, and z directions. The element supports plasticity, hyperelasticity, creep, stress stiffening, large
deflection, and large strain capabilities. It also has mixed formulation capability for simulating
deformations of nearly incompressible elastoplastic materials, and fully incompressible hyperelastic
materials.

Grid Independence (Mesh Sensitivity Study)

The model is analyzed with appropriate boundary conditions and loads to study the convergence
pattern with respect to the element size. Appropriate boundary condition is applied on the model
and Finite Element Analysis is carried out for varying element size.

Shows variation in the stress value for different element sizes

1 97127 49.105 -
2 98258 51.264 4.21
3 107360 53.273 3.77

Sr. No 3 and 2 are having marginal difference between the stress results. Hence mesh with serial
number 3 is considered for analysis.
