Chapter 1

Introduction

Over the years the development of technology has increased and now it can be considered

as more advance as ever. Schools now have full equipped labs for learning. Has it ever come to

your mind that technology might be a good thing to allow student to use in order to enhance

learning?

According to bartleby.com, Education is one amongst the foremost important

professions within the working world. Technology has done many things in today’s society

especially for education and schools. Technology within the establishment has impacted the

teachers and students in many positive ways, including virtual field trips, testing tips, teacher

resources, class internet sites, and lesson plans.

This chapter serves to provide background information on the impact of using technology

to enhance students level of students’ academic performance in a grade 10 information

technology class This chapter is subdivided into multiple headings; Introduction Background of

the study, Problem statement, Purpose of the study, Significance of the study, Research

Questions and lastly Definition of terms.

Background Study

While being enrolled in night several years ago, the researcher had noticed cases in

classrooms where quit a high number of student would get 50 % and lower in the subject

information technology. The necessary equipment wasn’t in place. The computer science teacher

would just come to class and dictate to the class. Every student has his or her own learning style.

There are students with different learning styles. These learning styles are visual, auditory,

reading/writing and kinesthetic.

Without the use of computers in the school students weren’t able to grasp the context

because there weren’t any hands on practical for them to observe. Upon doing the research the

researcher came across several articles.

Richardson (2010) states, “students only have a 10 minutes attention span”. This was

appointed by Woolery (2011) stated that, student’s attention span will increase when they are

doing something that they enjoy. Information technology should be fun and interesting. Children

should be engaged in hands on activities not just notes to write. They will be less bored and they

will indeed learn according to research.

.
Problem Statement

This study seeks to examine the impact of using technology to enhance students level of

students’ academic performance in a grade 10 information technology class.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of using technology to enhance the

level of students’ academic performance in a grade 10 information technology class at a high

school . Also to provide accurate evaluation and analysis in order to establish the right solutions

in order to have effective teaching a to cater to the needs of every students.

Research Questions

The two research questions which guided this proposed study are:

1) How does the lack of technology impact the teachers’ delivery of lesson within the classroom?

2) Can lack of technology contribute to students’ boredom during class time?

3). To what extent can the use of technology be used to help improve students’ academic

performance?
Significance of the Research

Research has shown that the majority of students over the years are performing under

average because of lack of technology in schools. I choose to do the research because I once

experienced this. I believe in the saying every child must learn and our children are the future. I

don’t think any child should be left the dark. Teachers are supposed to mold and inspire young

minds.

Every child has his/her own learning styles and they all have different way of grasping

the content. Majority of students learn better while doing hands on work or seeing that they need

to learn not just listening or writing.

This research will provide clarity to teacher and students whom are experiencing this

problem in the classroom. In this given research is successful, then it will be beneficial to

teachers, students and even researchers who are experiencing this problem. They will have better

understanding of how to deal with the matter at hand.

Definition of key terms

There are several key terms used in this body of the study.

They are:

Technology . According to oxford dictionary technology means the application of

scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry.

Computer. According to oxford dictionary this mean an electronic device for storing and

processing data, typically in binary form, according to instructions given to it in a variable

program.

Interest. According to www.merriam-webster.com means the feeling of wanting to know

or learn about something or someone.

Conclusion

This chapter was focused on the proposed topic that the researcher took into

consideration. This mainly consisted the background of the problem, purpose of the study,

research questions, significance of the research and definition of terms. The study was based

upon the impact of using technology to enhance students level of academic performance in a

grade 10 information technology class in a high school.

This chapter was directed to the purpose of the study, which was the main reason for

carrying out this research. The lack of computers in information technology classes in schools

has been going on for decades.

This research, however, states details about the impact of using technology to enhance

students level of academic performance in a grade 10 information technology class.
