Subject: Request for Management Funding

Respected Sir,
We, the students of Electronics and Telecommunications Department, Dwarkadas J. Sanghvi
College of Engineering, have come together to participate in the annual CanSat Competition
organized by American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and
Astronautics (AIAA). With a great leap in our rankings and performance, and consistent growth from
the past years and a promising development this year, DJS Arya hopes to continue its growth in the
aero-space field.
The students get an opportunity to make a project based on the concepts of
telecommunication which helps the team gain an insight into the course and mapping of telemetry.
The team’s focus is to build a prototype according to the problem statement and with this prototype
as reference; five more models are to be built and tested. Ranking 12th out of 400 of the best teams
across the world and 1st amongst the Indian teams, we as a group hope to represent our college
and our country at an international level once again. This will be a motivation for future batches of
our college to take the CanSat tradition one step ahead and gain further industrial exposure.
The launch for CanSat 2023 will be in held in the USA; the launch operations of the
competition will be held from 9th – 12th June 2022. We have already initiated the design process for
the prototype. Participating in this competition will help us understand the various complexities
involved in making a Canister Satellite. Moreover, it will provide us with the invaluable experience
of working as a team, while representing our institution on an international level.
To proceed further with the completion of the final design, and translating our prototype into
an Industrial grade model, we would require your invaluable financial aid. We as a team would be
extremely grateful if you could extend your support to us, in pursuing this endeavour. The
components purchased via the institution may find its utilisation in different projects of the
department such as mini projects, BE projects as well as DJ Strike Projects.
For the academic year 2022-2023 DJS Arya plans to enter the competition with 3 set of
teams. To ensure utmost precaution for excelling in the designed rounds of the competition we wish
to move ahead with the above strategy to avoid any hurdles with regards to our selection.

Thanking you in anticipation

Yours sincerely,

Mehek Shaikh Shrey Shah Soham Sawant Shweta Joshi

Introduction
CanSat stands for Canister Satellite. A CanSat is a type of sounding rocket payload used to
teach space technology. It is like the technology used in miniaturized satellites. No CanSat has ever
left the atmosphere, nor orbited the earth.
In CanSat competitions, the payload is required to fit inside the volume of a typical can (125mm
diameter and 400mm height) and have a mass below 600g. Antennas can be mounted externally,
but the diameter cannot increase until the CanSat has left the launch vehicle. CanSats are deployed
from small rocket at certain heights which vary depending on the competition. CanSats are equipped
with a recovery system, usually a parachute, to limit damage upon recovery and to allow the CanSat
to be reused.

Competition Details

The American Astronautical Society (AAS) and American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
(AIAA) have organized an annual student design-build-launch competition for space-related topics.
Although similar competitions exist for other fields of engineering (robots, radio-control airplanes,
racing cars, etc.), most space-related competitions are paper design competitions. While these are
worthwhile, they do not give students the satisfaction of being involved with the end-to-end life cycle
of a complex engineering project, from conceptual design, through integration and test, actual
operation of the system and concluding with a post-mission summary and debrief. This competition
fulfils that need.
This annual competition is open to teams from universities and colleges. Teams must be able to
design and build a space-type system, following the approved competition guide, and then compete
against each other at the end of the two semesters to determine the winners. Rockets will be
provided but teams are responsible for funding the construction of their CanSat and all travel/lodging
expenses.
