As we go into the warmer weather it is a good time to take a look at the knitted fashions and
designs that will be around throughout the summer months and think about trans-season
designs. Lets ask ourselves – What is black and white and stylish all over?
The answer is simply the season’s knitwear designs!

T This season’s designs are

sheer magic for the knitter
and are a combination of
airy lace, fashion fusion,
draped sweaters and shawls, optical
illusion black and whites and so much
more…
Spring and of course the summer,
is a time when we can opt for bold
geometrics and floral prints, or go for the
opposite look with fine knitted lace-wear
and cables; whether you knit them up in
a delicate colour or choose to make a
bold statement with a vivid tone.

Shapes
There is a plethora of shapes to
choose from this year on the fashion
palette, including the draped look,
short and sweet cropped tops, delicate
cardigans, swing front cardigans,
lace shawls – lightweight cotton knit
sweaters which can be knitted up in a
myriad of colours and yarns. Many of
the season’s designs boast extra wide
scoop necks or slash necks. These
very flattering neckline styles look very

if you have a nice light tan!

If you live in the colder climate areas
of Australia, (yes there are some!)
the cabled cardigan has moved from
Cable Knit the autumn and winter wardrobe into
the spring and summer as they are

summer night. These are called ‘trans-
seasonal’ items. Just remember that
natural fibres and softer textures are
more comfortable in the summer. Take
a look in your wardrobe and check

knitwear that is trans-seasonal.
V-neck tank tops and longer line
gilets are around and updated with
the use of colour blocking, multi-
coloured dyes and stripes. Waterfall
wraps, boleros and the ever popular
Knitted Fashion
shawl stay in fashion while still on the
fashion board are knitted collars; these
knit up in a jiffy and can completely
change the look of a sweater
especially if knitted up in one of the
season’s colours.

Colours
Spring and summer colours are no
longer the province of the cool whites
and creams of the past; although they
are popular and always on the fashion
board. However, parlour pastels and a
‘hint of a tint’ are the ideal showcase
for filigree work and lace-work, whilst
cotton soft t-shirt yarns look great
made up in classic and casual styles
that team with shorts or lightweight
trousers or skirts.

Stitches to Use
You are in control! Whether you
choose to keep it simple with stocking
stitch, striping or go mad and consider
lace, filigree or go for cables which
maybe a new knitting challenge for
you, the designs around are sure to
meet everybody’s knitting level.
A real stand out this season is the
cable knit. This is not the chunky,
heavy, cosy style for wintertime; it is a
light, floaty, summer version that aids
the layering look and may become a
summer staple, especially when it is
designed in such way that you reveal
more skin!
For example you can introduce a
cabled panel into a sweater or edge
a cardigan aiming to achieve a ‘mesh’
look. The trick is to aim for a looser
and ‘open work’ knit. Of course
sleeveless cable knits are a very
wearable option. Fendi and Bora Aksu
are showcasing some wonderful cable
knits in their collections.
Summer Knit Designers
As usual there are so many designers
out there offering fashion garments
from the outrageous to the ones
that we can wear to work or out
socially. Isabel Marant has twinned her
cable knits with tailored shorts for a
summery look, whilst designers Fendi
and Alexander Wang have opted for
cut away knitwear in monochromes for
that sexy summer look.
Just remember your own shape
and colouring and aim to flatter that

slave to fashion!

white knits in addition to the use of
orange, green and cerulean (Deep blue
in colour like the big, clear Australian
sky) to showcase the bold, the bright

Yarns to Use
Of course you can choose from the
myriad of yarns that are available
in your local wool shop or online
and whether you choose natural or
synthetic, colourful, linear or matte
there are so many that will knit up into
summer-wear. However it is always
an inspiration to check out what the
shops will be selling and this gives
many of us the ‘edge’ when deciding
on our next project.
Take a look at those yarns on offer
with glossy effects, compact stretch
yarns, multi-coloured yarns, even those
with shiny or washed out effects –
everyone will knit up and produce a
unique garment that is truly your own.
Finally if you are a bit dubious about
introducing colour blocking into your
repertoire try using sock weight yarn –
if you use a darker base and a seasonal
colour it will work well with many
items in your wardrobe. Don’t forget to
hold your yarns together and choose
your striping method before you start.
