Introduction

In the past two decades, communication technologies have evolved rapidly. Social
media has become an integral component of our lives, especially among teenagers.
The pervasive developments of social media channels such as Twitter, WhatsApp,
Facebook, and Instagram have influenced the way we access, utilize, and exchange
information, how we obtain news, and associate with each other.

Advantages
Social networking sites help us to share information fast, efficiently, inexpensively and
more comfortable than ever before. We engage with friends, family, and groups
through the exchange of photos, moments, motivational thoughts and videos from the
comfort of our homes, couches, and beds in real-time. The constant evolution of
devices such as tablets, smartphones, and personal computers has raised our usage
of social media. Teenagers use such sites for chatting and uploading various media to
share with other users regardless of geographical distances. Social media also assist
businesses to flourish, as they can display their products on various platforms for
attracting more customers in order to gain greater profit. Students can learn various
topics from such sites regarding their studies, helping them to achieve excellence in
their academics.

Disadvantages
For instance, youths who spend too much time watching videos on YouTube, chatting
on Facebook, and texting may develop an addiction. Social media networking
channels have replaced face-to-face communication among teenagers. The quality of
interpersonal relationships has decline immensely as young people rely on social
media regularly. Furthermore, most teenagers find themselves isolated as the size of
their social circle reduces. Such users experience adverse effects, such as depression
and loneliness.

Conclusion
Parents and teachers play an essential role in providing awareness about the
drawbacks of social media. They should provide guidance about how to use social
networking sites wisely in order to create a sustainable society for not only our current
generation but also for our future generations.
