1.1 General safety regulations

Observe the following to prevent injuries to personnel and dam‐
age to the vehicle:
WARNING
Accidents and injury can be caused if a gear is inadvertently

engaged while the engine is running.
♦ Before working on vehicle with engine running, move se‐
lector lever to position “P” and apply parking brake.
To prevent personal injury and damage to or destruction of elec‐

trical and electronic components, observe the following:
♦ Switch off ignition before disconnecting and connecting test
equipment.
Caution
When disconnecting the battery there is a risk of serious dam‐

age to electronic components:
♦ Observe the correct procedure for disconnecting the bat‐
tery.
♦ Always switch off the ignition before disconnecting the

connecting and connecting battery .

1.2 Safety precautions during road tests in

which testing and measuring equipment
is used
Observe the following if test and measuring instruments are re‐
quired during a road test:
WARNING
Accidents can be caused if the driver is distracted by test

equipment or if test equipment is not secured.
Persons sitting in the front passenger's seat could be injured if
the airbag is triggered in an accident.
• The use of test equipment while driving causes distraction.
• There is an increased risk of injury if test and measuring
equipment is not secured.
♦ Always secure test equipment to the rear seat with a strap
and have it operated from there by a second person.
1.3 Notes on tow-starting and towing

Caution
Risk of irreparable damage to gearbox.

♦ The selector lever must be in position “N” when the vehicle
is towed. Do not tow for more than 50 km and not faster
than 50 km/h.
Note
It is not possible to tow-start the engine.

2.2 Identifying the torque converter

There are different types of torque converters. They are bymarked

3.1 General notes

Gearbox:
The “automatic gearbox 09G” has six hydraulically actuated for‐
ward gears. When the torque converter lock-up clutch closes,
2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears become mechanically driven
gears by eliminating torque converter slip.
Torque converter
The torque converter is equipped with a lock-up clutch. The lock-
up clutch locks up depending on load and speed. The 2nd, 3rd,
4th, 5th and 6th gears can be driven mechanically (without slip).
ATF
Automatic Transmission Fluid
The ATF in the 09G gearbox lasts for life, and it does not need to
be changed during routine inspection.
The ATF level in planetary gearbox and final drive is checked and
topped up together.
ATF which has been drained out cannot be filled again.
Caution
Be careful when working with oil. Use caution when handling

oil.
The height of this tube determines the level of the ATF.

The tube must be removed to drain the fluid.
Only the ATF available as a replacement part may be used in the
automatic gearbox 09G. Other oils will lead to malfunctions or
failure of the gearbox; ATF part number ⇒ Electronic Parts Cata‐
logue (ETKA) .
3.2 Cleaning rules Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
♦ Thoroughly clean all joints and connections and the surround‐
ing areas before dismantling.
♦ Place removed parts on a clean surface and cover them up.
Use foil or paper. Use lint-free cleaning cloths.
♦ Carefully cover or seal open components if repairs cannot be
completed immediately.
♦ Fit only clean parts; remove new parts from their packaging
only immediately prior to fitting.
♦ Always renew seals and gaskets.
♦ Lightly lubricate O-rings with ATF before installation to prevent
them from being crushed during assembly.

♦ After installing, check ATF level and top up if necessary

3.3 General repair notes

♦ Extremely careful way of working as well as the highest pos‐
sible cleanliness are necessary to ensure the trouble free
repairing of the gearbox. Furthermore, the tools must be in
perfect condition. Naturally, the customary basic safety rules
must be observed during repair work.
♦ A number of generally applicable instructions for the various
repair procedures which were previously repeated at numer‐
ous places in the workshop manual are summarised here.
These instructions are valid for this Repair Manual,

♦ Before performing repairs on the gearbox, determine the exact
cause using vehicle diagnostic tester Guided fault find-
ing , Vehicle self-diagnosis and Test instruments
modes.

Often, one is uncertain when bolts must be tightened to low torque

settings. Tighten these bolts with torque wrench - V.A.G 1783- .
Gearbox:
♦ If gearbox covers have been unbolted or gearbox has no fluid,
do not run engine or tow vehicle.
♦ First thoroughly clean connecting points and surrounding
areas and then loosen bolts.
♦ When installing the gearbox, ensure that dowel sleeves be‐
tween the engine and gearbox are correctly located.
♦ With gearbox removed, secure torque converter against falling
out.
Electrical components
You are bound to have received an electric shock at some time

on touching metal objects, caused by the electrostatic charge of
the human body. This charge can disturb the function of electrical
components of the gearbox and of the selector mechanism.
– Before beginning work on electrical components, touch an
earthed object, for example a water pipe or lifting platform. Do
not touch connectors or »open« electronic components direct‐
ly.

3.4 Gaskets, seals

♦ O-rings, seals and gaskets must always be replaced.
♦ Before installing oil seals, lightly oil the outer circumference of
the seal and fill the space between the sealing lips -arrow-
about half full with grease - G 052 128 A1- .
♦ Open side of oil seal faces oil.
♦ After installing, check ATF level ⇒ page 26 .
3.5 Bolts, nuts

♦ Loosen and tighten securing bolts and nuts for covers and
housings diagonally.
♦ The specified torque values listed apply to unlubricated nuts,
bolts and screws.
♦ Clean thread of bolts from remnants of locking fluid using wire
brush. Then insert bolts with locking fluid - AMV 185 101 A1- .
♦ Use a thread chaser to clear residual locking fluid from all
threaded holes into which self-locking bolts are to be screwed.
Otherwise there is a danger of the bolts shearing off the next
time they are removed.
♦ Always replace any self-locking nuts and bolts.

Fitting location: the multifunction switch is found at the top in the
gearbox.
Valve body
Location: valve body is bolted to underside of gearbox housing
and covered by pan.
Solenoid valves - N88- and -N89- , as well as pressure regulating
valves - N90- , -N91- , -N92- , -N93- , -N282- and -N283- , are
mounted in the valve body.

Secure the torque converter to prevent it from falling out

– Secure torque converter for transportation (prevent from fall‐
ing out) using wire -A-, for example.
An unsecured torque converter may slide out when the gearbox
is tipped.
1.2 Torque converter: emptying

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Used oil collection and extraction unit - V.A.G 1782-
If ATF is contaminated, drain torque converter as follows:

– Extract ATF from torque converter using used oil collection
and extraction unit - V.A.G 1782- and oil extraction probe.

– Turn torque converter towards gearbox using light pressure
until notch in hub -arrow- engages in follower of pump gear
and torque converter can be felt to slip in place.
The torque converter is properly inserted when it can easily be
turned by hand and is seated equally deep in gearbox around the
entire circumference.
– Using a depth gauge, measure dimension -a- between bolting

flange on gearbox housing and contact surface of torque con‐
verter studs.
• The torque converter is installed correctly if dimension -a- is
at least 19.5 mm.
– It is important to ensure that the distance -a- remains un‐
changed during the subsequent assembly work. The torque
converter must not slip forwards.
Caution
If the torque converter is incorrectly installed and the gearbox

is bolted with force to engine, the torque converter and ATF
pump will be destroyed.
When you then install the gearbox, adhere to the following in‐
structions:
Caution
Before and while you are tightening the bolts on the engine/
gearbox flange keep checking that the torque converter can

still be rotated behind the drive plate. If the converter cannot
be turned, it must be assumed that it has not been installed
correctly and the drive lugs on the converter or the ATF pump
will be damaged during final tightening of bolted connections.

– Renew oil seal -arrow- of bolt.
Note
Even if oil level is too low, a small amount of oil will initially run out
of oil level pipe because pipe fills up during operation.
The ATF present in the overflow pipe runs out.

– Let surplus oil drain out.
– When excess oil has run out (when it begins only to drip), in‐
stall plug with new seal.
– Top up oil if no oil flows out.
Topping up

– Screw adapter of adapter for filling oil - VAS 6262 A- hand-

tight into inspection hole.
– Shake the oil bottles before opening.
– Screw the adapter for oil filling - VAS 6262 A- onto the oil bottle
while observing instructions ⇒ page 23 .
– Fill with 1 ltr. of ATF.
– Pull adapter for oil filling - VAS 6262- off the quick-release
coupling and take a look.
If ATF now flows out of hole in adapter:
There is no need to add ATF.
– Drain ATF until it drips.
– Fit ATF inspection plug with new oil seal and tighten. The ATF
level check is now completed.
If no ATF drips out of inspection hole:
– If a further litre has to be added ⇒ page 25 .
Caution
An oil level which is too low or too high will impair the function
of the gearbox.

twelve-point bolt -arrow- 90° at most, or wheel bearing will be

After loosening bolt, do not lower vehicle to ground again.
– Raise vehicle slightly. All 4 supports of lifting platform must be

at same height.

using double hexagon U/J socket -A-.
– Remove filler pipe for washer fluid reservoir of windscreen

– Position the adapter -T40093/3-6- over the right crossbeam; if

necessary, take the centre coolant tube out of its bracket.
– Bolt -A- must stay behind the edge -arrow-.
– Install the spindle of the auxiliary assembly kit of the support
bracket for the engine - T40093 /3- .
– Connect the engine support bracket spindle supplementary kit

- T40093 /3- to the support bracket - 10-222 A- via the square
tube - T40091/1- and tension it.
– Hook spindles into engine support eyes using shackle - 10 -
222 A /12- .
– Take up weight of engine/gearbox assembly engine support

– Remove left and right drive shafts ⇒ Running gear, axles,

steering; Rep. gr. 40 ; Drive shaft; Removing and installing

– Now pull connectors -1- and -2- at front off gearbox.

– Open retainer -2- for coolant hose, and remove coolant hose
-3-.
– Unclip wiring harness -arrow-.
– Unscrew bolt -4- from engine, and remove retainer -1-.
– Using insert - V/175- , remove 3 torque converter nuts

-arrow- through the opening in intermediate plate.
– To do this, crank engine at pulley/vibration damper 120° in di‐
rection of engine rotation. Repeat this for each nut.
Note
If not all 3 nuts for the torque converter have been unscrewed,
the torque converter will be removed when the gearbox is re‐
moved from the engine!
– Unscrew bolts -1- to -3-, and remove pendulum support.
– Remove bolts -arrows- for exhaust pipe bracket from sub‐

frame.

– Remove bolts -2- connecting gearbox mounting to gearbox

bracket -A- and bolts -1- connecting gearbox bracket to gear‐
box.
– Now remove gearbox bracket -A-. To do this, lower engine and

gearbox slightly via support bracket spindles.
4 turns are sufficient.
– Extract the lower joining bolts from the engine / gearbox.

Install gearbox support - 3282- with mounting elements to gear‐
box as follows:
• The engine and gearbox jack with gearbox support must be
placed under gearbox -1- such that the spindle -arrow A- faces
in direction of travel.
• The spindle -arrow B- faces towards left in direction of travel.
• The supports -2- must be inserted in the circumferential
groove of the sump.
• Pin -3- is engaged in recess on gearbox.

– Then, screw pin - 3282/29- into rear hole on gearbox for se‐
curing bolt of pendulum support -1-.
– Support gearbox via engine and gearbox support by raising it
slightly.
– Remove the final screws -arrow A- and -arrow B- connecting
the engine and gearbox. These bolts can be removed using
e.g. socket, multi-point bit - T10061- .
– Press gearbox off engine while simultaneously pressing tor‐

que converter out of drive plate of engine.
– When lowering gearbox, guide it past subframe. If necessary,
readjust gearbox support - 3282- slightly.
Note
♦ The connectors on the front of the gearbox must not be dam‐

aged when the gearbox is removed and installed. If the con‐
nectors do become damaged, renew the respective wiring
harness in the gearbox ⇒ page 83 .
♦ Pay attention to torque converter. It must be removed together
with gearbox. Use wire -A-, for example, to prevent torque
converter from falling out.
♦ Illustration of torque converter and gearbox may differ from

Due to the installation location, the gearbox cannot be removed

individually. It must be removed together with the engine and then
separated from the engine.

Removal:

3.2 Installing gearbox
Note
Refer to procedure for required special tools

– Check whether dowel sleeves are pressed into engine flange.
– Check seat of intermediate plate between engine and gear‐
box. The sheet metal must contact the engine along the entire
circumference. If the top does not contact the engine, it is not
properly engaged in the engine block.
– Check that torque converter is installed correctly ⇒ page 16 .
It must be easily turned by hand and the entire circumference
must be uniformly deep in gearbox.
– Carefully raise gearbox using engine and gearbox jack - VAS
6931- or -V.A.G 1383 A- , and move it to installation position
with gearbox support - 3282- .
– Join gearbox to engine, taking care not to trap wiring or other
connections.
Note
♦ It must be possible to guide the engine and gear box together

by hand until the flanges make contact all around.
♦ Otherwise, readjust the gearbox support until engine and
gearbox are properly aligned with each other.
♦ Continue turning the engine carefully while guiding the gear‐
box to the engine. The starter ring gear can be held from the
outside with a screwdriver. This way, the studs of the torque
converter will locate in the drive plate bores on installation.
– Bolt gearbox to engine, and bolt torque converter to drive

plate.
– Detach gearbox support - 3282- from gearbox.
– Renew all bolts on left assembly mounting.
– First screw in all bolts by hand.

When installing gearbox bracket -A-, it first needs to be bolted to

gearbox using securing bolts -1-.
– Raise engine/gearbox assembly via spindles of support brack‐
et - 10 - 222 A- .
– Align engine and gearbox in installation position. To do so,
raise engine/gearbox until gearbox bracket makes full contact
with gearbox mounting.
Caution
The threads in the gearbox bracket can be damaged if the bolts

are not inserted straight.
♦ Before screwing in the bolts -2-, the gearbox bracket and
support arm of the gearbox mounting must be absolutely
parallel to one another. If necessary, raise the back of the
gearbox using the engine and gearbox jack .

Two bolts -2- for securing gearbox bracket to gearbox mounting

can be tightened by inserting a screwdriver between the two bolts
to adjust to »previous seating«.
– Check adjustment of assembly mountings. Adjust them as
necessary ⇒ Rep. gr. 10 ; Assembly mountings; Adjusting
assembly mountings .
WARNING
Risk of accident.
♦ Do not remove support bracket - 10-222 A- until all bolts
securing the assembly mounting have been tightened to
specified torque.

the rotational centre of the support frame. To turn the gearbox
on the support clamp - VW 313- , a second mechanic must hold

6.3 Removing and installing selector lever

handle

♦ Hose clip pliers - V.A.G 1275 A-
Brief description:
Handle is removed together with selector cover.
Removal:
– Shift selector lever to position “D”.
The push button -arrow- does not need to be pulled out by hand.
Push button engages automatically in installation position when
handle is pulled off.
– Open lid of storage compartment.
– Grasp below cover with one hand and pull it upwards to unclip
it.
– Unplug connectors
– Cut open clamp -arrow- under boot using side cutters.

– Pull handle off selector lever without pressing push button.
Note
Do not press button again after removal as it will no longer be

possible to install the handle.
Installation
• Selector lever is in position “D”.
Note
♦ It is possible for the button in the handle to be pressed. Never

install a handle with the button pressed in.
♦ Move pushbutton to installation position ⇒ page 51 .
♦ New handle is supplied with installation guard. Do not remove
guard until just before installing. To remove, pull out in direc‐
tion of -arrow-.

– Push on handle with new clamp -arrow- onto stop.

– Secure clip with hose clip pliers - V.A.G 1275 A- .
– Connect the plug connection.
– Push pushbutton after installing it.
Note
If not installed correctly, the button remains inserted in handle

after being pressed. If this happens, remove handle again and
move button to installation position again ⇒ page 51 . Then, fit
the handle again.

If the button was pressed by mistake, the installation position can

be restored.
There are 2 ways of moving the push button into the installation
position, »with« and »without« release tool - T 10534- . Both of
them are described here.
Placing handle »with« release tool - T10534- in installation posi‐
tion:
Instead of the release tool - T10534- , the installation guard which
is delivered with new handles may also be used.
When using the installation guard, make sure that it has an eyelet
-arrow- at the front. Other types of installation guard are not suit‐
able.
– Holding down push button, completely push in release tool -

T10534- installation guard with eyelet -arrow-. The installation
guard latches in place while doing so.
– Release button. When the installation guard is pulled out, the
push button engages in installation position.
Placing handle »without« release tool - T10534- or installation
guard in installation position:
– Carefully unclip trim of handle -A- upwards.
– Using a screwdriver, for example, press small lever -1- for pull
rod into groove -2-. This action presses the push button -3-
back into installation position.

Note
♦ Press the lever only into the groove and no further.

♦ Do not clip the trim of the handle onto the selector mechanism
until the handle has been fitted. This makes it possible to check
that the small lever engages in the pull rod when the push

-4-. Do not use a sharp-edged lever, as the selector lever cable
could become damaged.

nism is removed.
– Raise vehicle.
– Remove heat shield for centre tunnel below selector mecha‐

– If fitted, remove bracket -A-.

– Remove nuts -arrows- inside vehicle.
– Remove selector mechanism -B- together with selector lever

Installation
Installation is carried out in the reverse order. During this step,
observe the following:

and install new securing clip -5-.

6.7 Gear mechanism: verification

The starter must not operate in the selector lever positions “R”,
“D”, “S” and in Tiptronic position.
On right-hand drive vehicles, the starter must operate in selector
lever positions “P” and “N” only when the button in the selector
lever handle is not pressed.
Over 5 km/h
When the selector lever is shifted to “N”, the selector lever lock
solenoid must not lock the selector lever. Selector lever can be
shifted back into a driving range.
Under 5 km/h
When the selector lever is shifted to “N”, the selector lever lock
solenoid must lock the selector lever only after approx. 1 second.
Selector lever cannot be shifted out of “N” position until brake
pedal is depressed.
Selector lever in “P” position and ignition switched on
• If the brake pedal is not pressed:
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of “P” position
when the button is pressed. Solenoid for selector lever lock blocks
selector lever.
Solenoid for selector lever lock releases selector lever. It is pos‐
sible to select a gear. Slowly shift selector lever from “P” through

to “S”, checking whether selector lever position in dash panel in‐

sert corresponds to actual selector lever position.
Selector lever in “N” position and ignition switched on
Selector lever is locked and cannot be shifted out of “N” position
with the push button pressed. Solenoid for selector lever lock
blocks selector lever.
• If the brake pedal is pressed:
Solenoid for selector lever lock releases selector lever. It is pos‐
sible to select a gear.
Selector level in “Tiptronic” position
• Shift selector lever into Tiptronic gate.
The illumination of the “D” symbol in the selector mechanism cov‐
er must go out. “+” and “-” symbols must light up.
When the selector lever is switched into the Tiptronic gate, the
selector lever position indicator located on the dash panel insert
should change from “P R N D S” to “6 5 4 3 2 1”.
Ignition and light switched on
The corresponding symbol lights up on the cover of the gear se‐
lection mechanism.
Selector lever position display
If all the segments of the gear selector position indicator light up
simultaneously, it means that the gearbox emergency program
has been activated.
6.8 Selector lever control cable: checking

and adjusting
♦ Torque wrench - V.A.G 1331-
Brief description
To check ease of movement of selector lever cable, it must be
removed from the gearbox and the free end must be placed so
that it does not bump against anything.
Then move selector lever and reinstall the selector lever cable.
Then the selector lever cable must be adjusted ⇒ page 62 .
Do not grease connection of selector lever cable.
Checking
– Loosen bolt -2- of selector lever cable -1-.

Note
Do not remove securing clip -5-.
– Move selector lever repeatedly from »P« to »S« and back to

»P«. Protected by copyright. Copying for private or commercial purposes, in part or in whole, is not
• The selector lever and selector lever cable must be free to
move.
– Install selector lever cable again.
– Then, adjust selector lever cable ⇒ page 62 .
The selector lever cable must always be adjusted whenever
♦ gearbox is removed,
♦ removing and fitting the engine and/or gearbox,
♦ parts of the assembly mounting have been removed and re‐
installed,
♦ the cable or the gearbox operation mechanism is removed and
fitted
♦ the position of the engine and the gearbox is modified, for ex‐
ample when mounted without tensions.
Adjusting:

Adjuster screw -2- must be »loosened«.

– Set gearbox selector lever -3- on gearbox to position “P” (push
gearbox selector lever towards rear).
WARNING
The parking lock must be engaged.
– To do this, turn both front wheels simultaneously »under the

car« in the same direction until the parking lock can be heard
to engage.
• The parking lock is engaged when both front wheels cannot
be turned in the same direction at the same time.
– Gently push knob of selector lever forwards and backwards
but under no circumstances must you shift out of “P”.
In this way inner cable of selector lever cable finds it optimal po‐
sition.
– Tighten bolt -2-.

This completes the adjustment.

6.9 Removing and installing multi-function

switch
Remove the multi-function switch - F125-

– Move selector lever to position “N”.
– Switch off ignition.
– Loosen bolt -2- of selector lever cable -1-.

Note
Do not remove securing clip -4-.
– Pull connector off multifunction switch - F125- .
– Remove nut -1-.

– Remove spring ring -2- and lever -3- from selector shaft -4-.

– Using a screwdriver, fold back the hooks of the securing ring

-2-.
– Renew securing clip if hooks have broken off.
– Remove nut -1-.
– Unscrew bolt -5-.
– Remove the multifunction switch -4- with the washers -2- and
-3- from the selector shaft -6-.
Installing multifunction switch - F125-
– Place multifunction switch -4- on selector shaft -6-.

– Screw in the bolts -5- by hand to fasten the multifunction
switch .
– Bend hooks of lock washer -2- back.
– Place washer -3- on selector shaft -6-.
– Install washer -2- with hooks pointing up.
– Install washer -2- with long, narrow guides in long, narrow re‐
cesses of selector shaft -6-.
– Tighten nut -1- to specified torque.
– Secure nut -1- by bending up hooks on lock washer -2-.
Note
♦ If lock washer hooks break off due to bending, renew washer.

♦ Before installing gearbox selector lever to selector shaft, first
adjust multifunction switch - F125- . ⇒ page 66
– Fit gearbox selector lever -3- onto selector shaft -4-.

– Use gearbox selector lever -3- to set gearbox to position “P”.
To do this, push gearbox selector lever -3- opposite to direc‐
tion of travel to rear stop.
– Then, use gearbox selector lever -3- to shift gearbox to posi‐
tion “N”. To do this, push selector shaft lever -3- two detent
positions towards front (in direction of travel).
– Place spring ring -2- and nut -1- on selector shaft -4-.
– Tighten nut -1- to specified torque.

ened.
• Gearbox selector lever is removed from the selector shaft.

– Insert the adjusting gauge - T10173- into the selector shaft

-2- and turn the multifunction switch -1- until the device en‐
gages in the switch connector.
Note
If the lug of the connector cannot engage in the groove of the

setting gauge , the gearbox is no longer in position “N”. In this
case, use the setting gauge to shift the gearbox to position “N”.
– Using bolt -3-, secure setting gauge on selector shaft -2-.

– Tighten bolts -arrows- to specified torque.
– Remove setting gauge .

2.2 Valve body: Removal and installation
WARNING
Do not run engine or tow vehicle with pan removed or when

there is no ATF in gearbox.
♦ The valve body and the wiring harnesses can also be removed
when the gearbox is installed.
♦ Insert O-rings with ATF. Other lubricants leadbytocopyright.
Protected malfunction

♦ Always renew a valve body which is fouled or defective.

♦ Do not use fluffy cloths.
♦ After the oil pan has been installed, the ATF level must be
checked and topped up ⇒ page 26 .
Removal:
– With ignition switched off, disconnect battery ⇒ Electrical sys‐
tem; Rep. gr. 27 ; Battery: Disconnecting and connecting
battery .

– Remove oil strainer ⇒ page 70 .
– Draw a sketch of all senders and solenoid valves with their
respective connectors analogous to figure.
– Before separating connectors at senders and solenoid valves,
solenoid valve or sender and respective connector must be
identified.
WARNING
This sketch and identification are absolutely vital to prevent in‐

advertently interchanging connectors on senders and solenoid
valves when reinstalling valve body.
Under certain circumstances, interchanging connectors may
lead to destruction of the gearbox.
– Using a small screwdriver, carefully release securing tabs of

connectors on solenoid valves -1- through -8- and pull off con‐
nectors.

Caution
If a connector is damaged, the wiring harness and the valve

body must be replaced together with the solenoid valves.
– Separate connectors -A- and -B-.

– Unbolt connector retainers -1- and -2-.
– Unscrew gearbox oil temperature sender - G93- -item 3- and

carefully pull out from valve body.
– Detach wiring harnesses from retainers -arrows-.

– If fitted, bend back securing tab on selector lever -arrows-.
– Remove gearbox selector lever -1- from selector shaft.

– In the process, carefully grip selector lever -1- with pliers -2-
so that torque is not transferred to multifunction switch - F125- .
– Note spool valve -3- on valve body into which selector lever
engages so that this is not damaged.
The spool valve is very »sensitive«. Even the slightest damage

will lead to faults in operation.
– Therefore, always push spool into valve body, secure against
falling out, and never interchange it.
The bolts securing the valve body to the gearbox housing are of
different lengths and must be replaced.
Only the marked securing bolts -arrows-, -arrows A- and
-arrows B- may be loosened.
Caution
If other bolts are loosened, the function of the valve body will
be impaired and/or the valve body will be distorted.
– Unbolt brackets -1- and -2-.

– Loosen securing bolts -arrows-, -arrows A- and -arrows B- for
valve body diagonally and carefully remove valve body.
-3- valve body designation, e.g. A2 in this case.

– When removing valve body, observer damper piston -2-.

– Remove damper piston -2- with spring.
Installation
– Routing of wires must be noted precisely to prevent them from
being trapped when valve body is positioned.
– Route wiring harness -5- in specified recess in gearbox ac‐

cording to figure.
The distance -a- must be maintained to prevent wiring harness
-5- from coming into contact with planetary gearbox and thereby
becoming damaged during vehicle operation.
– Route wiring harnesses -1-, -3-, -4- and -5- over edge of the
gearbox as shown in illustration.
– Secure wiring harnesses on gearbox with adhesive tape.
– Coat damper piston -2- with ATF and insert with spring in
gearbox housing as show in diagram.
– Carefully fit valve body, screw in 2 bolts and tighten by hand.
• Wiring harnesses -1-, -3-, -4- and -5- must not be jammed by
the valve body.

Lengths of bolts and location on valve body

Bolts -arrows A- Qty. 2, M6 x 16
Bolts -arrows B- Qty. 4, M6 x 28
– Install the remaining bolts and retainers -1- and -2- and tighten
by hand.
Note
♦ If lines are too short to be connected to the senders or bolted

at dedicated points on the valve body, they have been routed
incorrectly or are trapped by the valve body. Remove valve
body again and route cables correctly.
♦ All bolts for securing valve body have to be renewed.
– Tighten valve body diagonally from centre outwards; torque

setting ⇒ page 74 .
– Install sender for gearbox oil temperature - G93- and tighten;
tightening torque ⇒ page 74 .
– Fit connectors (qty. 8) on solenoid valves according to the
previously made identification ⇒ page 81 .
Caution
Under certain circumstances, interchanging connectors may

lead to destruction of the gearbox.
If a connector is damaged, the wiring harness and the valve
body must be replaced together with the solenoid valves.
– Tighten retainer for connectors ⇒ page 81 ; torque setting

⇒ page 74 .

must fit into washer when it is screwed on.

– In the process, carefully grip selector lever -1- with pliers -2-
so that torque is not transferred to multifunction switch - F125- .

– If securing tab is present, bend it up on nut -arrows-.

– Raise drive shaft as high as possible and secure. Do not dam‐
