SECTION A

HFLE

Definition

HFLE is the abbreviation for Health and Family Life Education. It is an


educational developmental programme that focuses on a person entirely
by teaching them facts, skills and attitudes to help prepare them for
life and to build healthy relationships.

Four themes

HFLE is divided into four themes or strands. They are as follows:

1. self and interpersonal relationships


2. sexuality and sexual health
3. maintaining a holistic and healthy lifestyle
4. managing the environment

Three positive values

HFLE is value-based. The values are what you believed to be right and
important. Three positive values are:

1. kindness
2. honesty
3. compassion

Description of three life-skills

HFLE life skills are special skills which helps us to deal with life’s
challenges. The descriptions of three skills learned are as follows:

1. Healthy self-management is the ability to make positive choices.


You must get to know yourself, be able to recognise right from
wrong and take the right action.

2. Refusal skill is the ability to say no effectively. Make sure your


voice, facial expression and body language say no.

3. Effective communication skill is the ability to express ourselves


and listen to others. Give your full attention by showing you are
listening and ask questions without interrupting others.

Definition of self-awareness and its steps

Self-awareness is knowing who you are and understanding yourself. The


key steps in self-awareness are as follows:

Description and illustration of three behavour patterns studied

1. Assertive behaviour is standing up for yourself without denying


the rights of others. Assertive people are kind, calm, firm and
confident.

2. Aggressive behavior is standing up for your own rights without


thinking about other people’s rights.

3. Passive behavior is not standing up for yourself. It means to


remain silent even when something bothers you.
