Precast Manhole Installation
PROJECT: SUPPLY AND LAY THE PROPOSED BY PASS TREATED EFFLUENT LINE
Contract No.: BOI/BEPZ/ES/2022/07/03.031
REF: MS/BIYAGAMA/MH INSTALLATION
1.0 Scope
The method statement for precast manhole installation is to explain the systematic procedures,
arrangements and safety measures, which ought to be followed during installation of precast manhole.
Contractor shall be accountable to comply with all work and safety stipulations/measures as stated in this
method statement.
2.0 Surveying
The coordinates and elevations of the survey monuments shall be given to the Contractor by the Client.
The Contractor shall verify the survey reference points. The Contractor shall furnish these reference points
on the Site and using these reference points, shall perform all surveying and staking required to complete
the Work. Existing Survey Monuments in the Work area shall be preserved and protected from damage or
disturbance and shall not be removed unless necessary.

4.0 Excavations
4.1 General
Excavation shall be done after clearing and grubbing has been completed. Excavations shall preferably be
performed in dry conditions. Proper drainage for excavated areas shall be maintained to prevent ponding
of water. Excavated areas shall be kept dry by pumping or other suitable methods. Prior to completion of
drainage facilities, sufficient temporary ditches and culverts to prevent ponding shall be installed.
All the general excavation methodology will be applied and the excavation pit size will be 4050mm x
4050mm in order to facilitate working space for manhole placing and in situ concrete jacket work for
manholes.
If necessary, dewatering will be done and for the pond side shoring will be arranged if any concerns arise
after the inspection. Necessary slope preparation work will be done in order to prevent the collapse of
banks at the other side.

5.1 Bedding
After excavation complete base of the excavation pit compacted in order to lay the chip bedding. After
that 100mm thick 5-10mm chip bedding lay on the compacted soil layer and compacted to 50mm.
Another layer also laid and follow the same procedure.
After the bedding compaction completed, level measurements were taken to ensure the proper levels was
maintained. After that bottom part of the manhole was places as in Figure 09 by using boom truck. After
placing bottom part again necessary level measurements were taken and then form work for concrete
benching was fixed and C35A Sulphate resistant concrete was used to pour the concrete benching. After
that 20mm thick sulphate resistant cement concrete topping will be applied on top of the concrete
benching. After that inlet and outlet Hume pipes were connected to the bottom part of the manhole. Then
intermediate parts and top covers were placed and cement sand mortar was used to seal the connecting
groove.

After finishing concrete cover around the manhole, brick covering will be build using engineering bricks
and 1:3 CT: SAND Mortar and height of the brick covering will be decided according to the manhole top
finish level and road formation level. Finally, 600mm dia Manhole and cover frame will be installed and
cover the frame using 1:3 Cement sand Mortar.
