A pioneer leader for women’s rights, Susan Anthony became one of the leading women reformers of the
19th century. In Rochester, New York, she began her first public crusade on behalf of temperance, the habit
of not drinking alcohol. The temperance movement dealt with the abuses of women and children that
suffered from alcoholic husbands. Also, she worked tirelessly against slavery and for women’s rights.
Anthony helped write the history of woman suffrage.
At the time Anthony lived, women did not have the right to vote. Because she voted in the 1872 election,
a US official arrested Anthony. She hoped to prove that women had the legal right to vote under the
provisions of the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution. At her trial, a hostile federal judge found
her guilty and fined her $100, which she refused to pay.
Anthony did not work alone. She worked with reformers of women’s rights such as Elizabeth Cady
Stanton and Amelia Bloomer. Susan worked for the American Anti-Slavery Society with Frederick Douglas,
a fugitive slave and black abolitionist.
On July 2nd 1979, the US Mint honored her by issuing the Susan Anthony dollar coin. Although

Passage 1. Read the passage. Circle the best answer A, B, or C to each of the questions
In the late 19th century, the women’s movement occurred in many developed countries. It is said to
begin in Western societies and then quickly spread over the world. During the movement, women fought
against inequality in education, employment, reproductive rights, etc. Their uprising was the inevitable result
of such a long period of being subdued. The victims of the temporarily old society were not only women
from poor families but also from all the social classes not permitted to express their own ideas. To these
people, life seemed to last endlessly without freedom and joyfulness. Therefore, their reaction was
considered as the revolution in recognising their contributions and narrowing the huge gender gap between
males and females. The victory of the feminist movement gave birth for the new era of independence, liberty,
and happiness for all women globally. Since then, women have legally gone to school, chosen their career,
and been admitted to most social institutions and organisations, which had been considered extremely
luxurious things for them. Although gender inequality has been substantially reduced over the past decades,
there are still a few places where women do not have their entitlement, young girl children are completely
illiterate and mature ones cannot work and receive payment as equally as men. How to help them to be
released from the culturally regional oppression is a very tricky situation. However, it is believed that this
issue is going to be resolved soon.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
A recent study shows that an unequal share of household chores is still the norm in many families,
despite the fact that many more women now have jobs. In a survey, men said they contributed an average of
37 per cent of the total housework, while the women estimated their share to be nearly double that, at 70 per
cent. This ratio was not affected by whether the woman was working or not.
When they were asked what they thought was a fair division of labor, women with jobs felt that
housework should be shared equally between male and female partners. Women who did not work outside
the home were satisfied to perform 80 per cent if their husband did the remainder. Research has shown that
if levels increase beyond these percentages, women become unhappy and anxious, and feel they are
unimportant.
After marriage, a woman is reported to increase her household workload by 14 hours per week, but
for men the increased amount is just 90 minutes. So the labour division becomes unbalanced. It is the
inequality and loss of respect, not the actual number of hours, which leads to anxiety and depression. The
research describes household chores as thankless and unfulfilling. Women who have jobs report that they feel
overworked by the chores in addition to theіг professional duties.
In cases where men perform most of thе housework, results were similar. The research showed that
the least distressed people are thosе who have an equal share. The research concludes, “Everybody benefits
from sharing the housework. Even for the women keeping house, a shared division of labour is important. If
you decide to stay at home to raise the children, you don’t want to become the servant of the house.”

INTERNATIONAL GIFT-GIVING CUSTOMS
The tradition of gift giving is a worldwide practice that is said to have been around since the beginning of
human beings. Over time, different cultures have developed their own gift giving customs and traditions.
In France, the gift of wine for the hostess of a dinner party is not an appropriate gift as the hostess would
prefer to choose the vintage for the night. In Sweden, a bottle of wine or flowers are an appropriate gift for
the hostess. In Viet Nam, a gift of whisky is appropriate for the host, and some fruit or small gifts for the
hostess, children or elders of the home. Besides, gifts should never be wrapped in black paper because this
color is unlucky and associated with funerals in this country. Gifts that symbolize cutting such as scissors,
knives and other sharp objects should be avoided because they mean the cutting of the relationship. Also, in
some countries you should not open the gift in front of the giver and in others it would be an insult if you did
not open the gift.
Beyond the gift itself, give careful consideration to the manner in which it is presented. Different cultures
have different customs regarding how a gift should be offered - using only your right hand or using both
hands, for example. Others have strong traditions related to the appropriate way to accept a gift. In
Singapore, for instance, it is the standard to graciously refuse a gift several times before finally accepting it.
The recipient would never unwrap a gift in front of the giver for fear of appearing greedy.
Understanding these traditions and customs, as well as taking time to choose an appropriate gift, will help
you to avoid any awkwardness or embarrassment as you seek to build a better cross-cultural relationship.

C . In Viet Nam, such things as scissors, knives and other sharp objects shouldn't be used as a gift.
