TASK: Perform cylinder cranking and running compression tests; determine needed action.
Student Instructions: Read through the entire procedure prior to starting. Prepare your workspace
and any tools or parts that may be needed to complete the task. When directed by your supervisor/
instructor, begin the procedure to complete the task and comment or check the box as each step is
finished. Track your time on this procedure for later comparison to the standard completion time (i.e.,
“flat rate” or customer pay time).

Step
Procedure

1. Research the procedure and specifications for performing both a cranking compression test ✔
and a running compression test on this vehicle in the appropriate service information.

2. List the conditions that must be met for the cranking compression test to be accurate. (You may paraphrase.)
Disable the fuel system. You can easily do this by simply by disconnecting the fuel injectors from their electrical connector.
This step is important because it will prevent fuel from being injected into the cylinder as you do the compression test, so don't skip it.2 ✔

Remove all of the spark plugs. As your taking them out, be careful and don't drop any of them on the floor, or you could cause the spark plug's ceramic insulator to break, and this will cause a misfire!
NOTE: Make sure that you leave all 4 ignition coils disconnected from their electrical connector to avoid having spark discharged during the test.3
Install the compression tester. Thread the engine compression gauge into the spark plug hole for the number 1 engine cylinder. Hand tighten the compression gauge only! Do not use any type of tool to get it tight.4
When ready, crank the engine as you observe the needle on the compression tester's gauge. Once the needle on the gauge stops climbing, have your helper stop cranking the engine.
Write down the compression value. Record this compression reading on a piece of paper. Include the number of the cylinder this reading belongs to. Now repeat steps 1 thru' 6 on the other cylinders.

3. Note the following specifications:

a. Minimum compression pressure in psi/kPa or %: 135 psi ✔

b. Maximum variation in %: 178 psi ✔

4. Cranking compression test: Perform the cranking compression test following the specified ✔
procedure. The top row in the table that follows is for a standard test, and the bottom row is

for a wet test using a small amount of clean engine oil. The wet test would normally be
performed on engines that fail the standard test. List the readings obtained for each cylinder
in the table.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

100 psi 110 psi 108 psi 100 psi

70 psi 55 psi 70 psi 90 psi

a. Calculate the difference between the highest and lowest cylinders (dry test) in %: ✔
50%

5. Running compression test: Following the specified procedure, perform the running ✔
compression test.

List the readings obtained for each cylinder in the table that follows. ✔

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

NOTE: Make sure the person snapping the throttle open is ready to turn off the ignition switch if the throttle
sticks open.

a. Determine any necessary action(s).

6. Have your supervisor/instructor verify satisfactory completion of this procedure, any observations found, and
any necessary action(s) recommended.

Step
Non–Task-Specific Evaluation
Completed

1. Used tools and equipment as directed and returned them in good working order. ✔

2. Complied with all general and task-specific safety standards, including proper use of any ✔
personal protective equipment (PPE).

3. Completed the task in an appropriate time frame (recommendation: 1.5 or 2 times the ✔
flat rate).

4. Left the workspace clean and orderly. ✔

5. Cared for customer property and returned it undamaged.

Comments:

Have your supervisor/instructor verify satisfactory completion of this procedure, any observations made, and any
necessary action(s) recommended.

Evaluation Instructions: The scoring box below is intended to act as a guide for both student and
supervisor/instructor. Each criterion listed will help students understand what is expected of them and
help supervisors/instructors articulate the level of success at a particular task. The scoring is set up to
allow a second attempt at each task (see the Test and Retest columns). Scoring is designed to award
students points only for task criteria that were completed correctly. Points are lost for failure to complete
the employability requirements (see Non–Task-Specific criteria). When all criteria are evaluated, tally the
points for a total at the bottom of each column.
