CALCULATION METHOD
The computer programme is used to calculate natural frequencies and mode shapes using
matrix techniques.
The stiffness and mass matrices, assembled from the input data, are related in the
equation :-
2
KX = MXω
Where K = Stiffness matrix
M = Mass matrix
X = Displacement vector
ω = Circular frequency of vibration
-1
The eigen values and eigen vectors of the matrix KM are then calculated to obtain the
natural frequencies and mode shapes of the system. These are presented in the form of the
well-known Holzer tabulation. The corresponding dynamic torques are calculated at this
point.
The system response for each mode of vibration is then calculated using excitation and
damping effects contained in the system data.
The programme can be used for carrying out a force damped calculation for the system. It
uses the same basic input data as that used for the natural frequency calculation.
For a given speed range ( decided by the programme or user ) a hundred increments of
speed are taken. At each increment, the programme calculates the response throughout
th
the system due to the excitation of each harmonic, up to and including the 12 order. It
then phases each of these together to create a synthesis of all harmonics for that speed.
The results are displayed in the form of a graph of speed against values of torque, stress,
amplitude or power absorbed at any required point in the mass elastic system. The user
decides the output type and position. The programme also calculates allowable torques, if
requested, and plots them against selected parameters. Allowable stress values based on
formulae provided by most leading ship classification societies can be requested.
Classification:
The results of the calculations are referenced to Lloyds Register “Rules and regulations for the classification
of ships” part 5.

Reference Description
S354401 The installation has been analysed at full load and normal operating conditions. Our
calculation takes into consideration that the torque, so the excitations caused by
the diesel engine, is dependent of the speed in the square. The coupling stiffness
is based on the full load torque of the engine. Analysed from the natural frequency
calculations.
The tables show the analytic results.
S354402 As S354401. The graphs show the results from the forced damped analysis
S354403 As S294002, however, cylinder nr. 1 is misfiring. The graphs show the results from
the forced damped analysis
S354404 Completely identical with S3544 however for excitation of the system only the pump
is calculated since this excitation is not taken into consideration at the runs of
354401 to 354403.
With non linear couplings it is a good habit to make calculations for the reduced stiffness at lower load too.
Since the PM 60 coupling is under full load at only 28% of the nominal torque and since it is common practise
in torsional vibration calculations to calculate with the stiffness at 25% at lowest we could only find that
following the rule of common practise would be appropriate in no way.
For misfiring conditions our calculations are based on a pressure drop of 90% in cylinder 1.
This is much more severe than according to the calculation rules given by Caterpillar in the instruction
TM3310.
