AA14124 EDT GTA Cable Strand Seperation
During inspection, some of the trucks listed above had alternator cables twisted counterclockwise,
causing the stranded conductors of the cable to separate (also known as birdcaging). This separation
could create a hot spot, potentially causing the cable insulation to melt, leading to cable failure (Figure 1).
Discoloration of the alternator cable (Figure 2) is a result of overheating due to the cable being
improperly rotated.

When connecting the alternator cable to the alternator or control cabinet, it may be necessary to rotate the
alternator cable to align the terminal hole with a stud or threaded hole. With the cable terminal facing
you, rotate the terminal clockwise (Figure 1) until aligned. Remove the excess slack in the cable before
tightening the cable gland (Figure 2).
