HISTORY OF VOLLEYBALL

Invented on 1895
William G. Morgan
Physical Education Director
Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) at Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Designed as an indoor game for businessman who found the playing of basketball
is too vigorous.

Was called Mintonette, until a professor in Spring Field College Massachusetts


noted the volleying nature of play and proposed the named Volleyball

The creator wrote the original rules and printed in the first edition of the first
official handbook of the Athletic League of the Young Men’s Christian
Associations of North America 2897

In 1916 rules were issued jointly by the YMCA and the National Collegiate Athelic
Associaton (NCAA)

The first nationwide tournament in the US is conducted by the national YMCA


Physical Education Committee in New York City 1922

The United States Volleybal Association (USVBA) was formed in 1928 and
recognized as the rules making and governing body of United States.
From 1928 USVBA now known as USA Volleyball (USAV) conducted annual
national men’s and senior men age 35 and older volleyball champioships except
1944 and 1945

Women’s division started in 1949, seinor women editon was added age 30 and
older was added in 1977.

Other national events in the US are conducted by the member groups of the USAV
such as the YMCA and NCAA

Volleyball was introduced to Europe by American Troops during world war one
when national organizations were formed.

The Federation International de Volley Ball (FIVB) was organized in paris in 1947
and moved to Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1984

USVBA was one of the 13 charter members of the FIVB whose membership grew
to more than 210 countries by the late 20th century.

International volleyball competion in 1913 began in 1913 with the first Far East
Games in Manila

During 1900s and continuing up to world war 2 volleyball in asia was played in a
larger court, lower net, nine playes in team.

The FIVB sponsored world volleyball championships for men on in 1949 for both
men and women in 1952 and succeeding years. Lead to acceptance of standardize
playing rules and officiating.
It became an Olympic sport for both men and women in 1962 olympic games in
Tokyo.

The European championships were long dominated by Czechoslavakian,


Hungarian, Polish, Bulgarian, Romanian, and Soviet (later Russian teams)

At the world and Olympic level soviet teamshave won more titles for both men and
women than those of other nations.

A higly publicized Japanese womens team Olympic champions in 1964 reflected


the interest of private industry in sports. Encouraged by Japanese volleyball
association this women’s team made its mark in international competition, and
winning the World Championship in 1962, 1966, and 1967, in addition to the 1964
olympics.

At the end of the 20th century the Cuban women team dominated the world
championships in Olympics.

The pan American games added volleyball in 1955. And Brazil, Mexixo, Canada
and the United states are top contenders.

In Asia China, Japan, and Korea dominated competition.

Beach Volleyball is played in Austrialia, New Zealand, and throughout the south
pacific.

A four year cycle of international volleyball events recommended by FIVB began


in 1969 with World Cup Championship, to be held following the Olympic games.
Second year is the world championships, third regional events are held for example
Asian games and more, and in the fourth year the Olympic games.
