GUIDELINES FOR TEXTILES CLOTHING AND FASHION SBA #3

The Textiles Clothing and Fashion School Based Assessment (SBA) 111 require students to
make a Burlap clutch purse measuring 11”x 8” completed with appropriate indigenous fastener
and decoration/design.

Please note the following:

 SBA 111 is assessed internally by the teacher

 Students should develop a thorough understanding of

- how to assess their own work,

- assess quality of received component parts,
- measure parts of products,
- record information on production and
- investigate causes of deviations from specified quality standards.

 Incomplete products are not acceptable in the industry so students must complete and
present a finished product with the required specifications given for the SBA
 Careful planning and appropriate procedures will enable students to complete the product
within the specified time.
 Competency is demonstrated by the performance of all stated criteria according to the
range of variables.

All students doing SBA 111 are expected to:

1. Interpret work instructions, standards and specifications appropriate to own work.

2. Create unique clutch purse 11”x 8” using burlap featuring the Jamaican colours and bias
tape for trimming
3. Use indigenous materials for the fastener and to create a simple design/decoration on the
clutch

4. Purse should be fully lined.

5. Draft or adapt a pattern to create the design for the clutch purse with an appropriate
shaped flap.
6. Select appropriate materials to construct and lined the clutch purse (texture and colour of
burlap, appropriate fabric for lining, interfacing for the entire clutch or for the flap of the
clutch).

7. Set up workstations
8. Prepare the fabric – straighten the edges, press and fold (where applicable)
9. Lay out, cut and mark the fabric pieces for the selected product.
10. Assemble the selected product pieces and make the necessary adjustments.
11. Attach ½” finish bias tape to complete product. (same colour bias as the material used to
construct the purse or a contrasting colour may be used)
12. Closure of clutch may be secured with the use of indigenous fasteners -such as bamboo,
shells, coconut shells and other indigenous materials.
13. Use indigenous materials to enhance or decorate the clutch purse
14. Students may make their own fasteners or decorations from the indigenous materials or
purchase them (once they are indigenous)
15. Document the process of constructing the purse. Take pictures and collect evidence of
carrying out the processes for the product
16. Check and measure the relevant quality parameters such as finish, size, product
variations, materials, alignment and damage of items.
17. Apply finishing operations to the product. This may involve clipping, checking for faults,
turning and attaching fastener, decorations or labels.
18. Act where standards of materials, component parts and final product or work processes
are found unacceptable.
19. Work systematically with attention to details without damage to goods, equipment or
personnel.
20. Maintain accurate work records in accordance with procedures.
