Chemicals used in hair rebonding/straightening

Straightening Cream

- Rebonding/straightening creams are made of

extremely alkaline based with a pH of 10 to 14, which
means they are very strong chemicals.

Did you know about the different kinds of straightening We only know the medicine used in salons,
creams? ma’am.

Read this Altogether

1. Sodium hydroxide cream softeners/ relaxants

(lye) are the strongest and fastest-acting (students reading)
chemicals. It has a pH of 9 to 12. It is used for
straightening strong curly or Afro hairstyles.

Have you seen or used lye? Yes, ma’am. We’ve seen it online.

2. Guanidine calcium hydroxide cream

softeners/relaxants (no-lye) are generally
similar to sodium hydroxide but normally used
on clients with sensitive scalps.

Why does lye relaxants are not ideal for clients with As the chemicals and pH level of these type of
sensitive scalps? relaxers are milder than lye-based relaxers,
ma’am.

Read this all together, class. (students reading)

3. Ammonium thioglycolate is used on hair with a

very soft curl and wave pattern. It is the main
chemical ingredient in Japanese Thermal
Reconditioning (TR) Systems and permanent
wave products. The pH is 8.5 to 12, depending
on the strength required to break down the
disulfide bond structure of the cortex layer of
the hair. Cysteamine hydrochloride straightens
the hair at a lower pH than the thioglycolate.
Cold wave and neutralizer, ma’am.
What did you use in doing a permanent hair perming
last school year?

Next.

4. Hydroxide Neutralization

The neutralization of hydroxide relaxers deactivates

the alkaline residues left in the hair by the relaxer. The (students reading)
pH of hydroxide relaxers is so high that the hair
remains at an extremely high pH, even after thorough
rinsing. Although rinsing is important, rinsing alone
does not neutralize (deactivate) the relaxer, nor
restore the normal acidic pH of the hair and scalp.

Because it deactivates the alkaline residues

Why is hydroxide neutralization essential in left in the hair by the relaxer ma’am.
straightening hair?

The three key factors of neutralizing shampoo are the

following:

1. to cleanse the hair of remaining chemicals;

2. to restore the pH balance of hair; and
3. to close the cuticle.

Next is:
5. Hydroxide Cream Softener/Relaxant Although the
same procedure is used for all hydroxide cream
(students reading)
softener/relaxants; application methods vary
according to previous use of texture services.

Why do the application methods vary according to To ensure a safety and successful outcome,
previous use of texture services? ma’am.

Who wants to read the next type of relaxant? (Dannes raised her hands)

Okay Dannes, start.

6. A virgin cream softener/relaxant application (Dannes reading)

should be used for virgin hair that has never been
chemically treated. Since the scalp area and the
porous ends will usually process more quickly than
the middle of the strand, the application for a virgin
cream softener/relaxant starts 4 inches (0.6
centimeters) to ½ inch (1.25 centimeters) away from
the scalp and includes the entire strand up to the
porous ends. To avoid over-processing and scalp
irritation, do not apply cream softener/ relaxant to the
hair closest to the scalp or the ends until the last few
minutes of processing.
(Jonalyn raised her hands)
So, what will you consider in applying cream softener
to virgin hair? Apply the virgin cream softener/relaxant 4
inches away from the scalp to avoid over-
Yes, Jonalyn? processing and scalp irritation.

(Baby Jane raised her hands)

Next, who wants to read?
Yes, Baby Jane.

7. A retouch cream softener/relaxant application (Baby Jane reading)

should be used for hair that had previous chemical
texture services. The application for a retouch cream
softener/ relaxant starts 4 inches to ½ inch away from
the scalp and includes only the new growth. To avoid
over-processing and scalp irritation, do not apply
cream softener/relaxant to the hair closest to the scalp
until the last few minutes of processing.

So where do you think a retouch cream is applied to

the hair?
To the new growth hair ma’am.
Next is the keratin hair straightening treatment.

Who among you here has experienced to have this

kind of straightening treatment before?
(Crystal Mae raised her hands)
What can you say about the result Crystal?

8. Keratin Hair Straightening Treatment My hair is shiny and silky ma’am.

Keratin is a protein found naturally in our hair. With

our current lifestyle, hair tends to get drier and loses
natural keratin, because of pollution, heat, styling,
coloring etc.

I noticed that my hair is dry, what about you grade 10?

How’s your hair?
Me too, ma’am. I have dry hair. –(Thalia)
(others were raising their hands too)
A keratin hair treatment infuses the vital element
keratin back into each strand of the hair. This helps to
fill in the gaps in the hair cuticles, and once keratin is
infused into the hair, hair becomes healthier,
straighter, and much easier to style. Keratin treatment
eliminates the frizz factor from hair. Keratin treatment
protects hair from damaging UV rays and humidity.

Any questions so far class?

Okay, let’s proceed.

None, ma’am.
Hair Straightening Iron/Flat Iron

A flat iron is a tool used to change the structure of the

hair. It has two heated plates in which hair is placed
in-between. The iron is then pulled slowly down the
length of the hair. The process warms the hair and
seals in moisture.
The flat iron or straightening iron breaks down the
positive hydrogen bonds found in the cortex of the
hair, which causes the hair to open and prevents it
from holding its natural form.

Have you thought about purchasing a hair iron, class?

These are the following to observe when purchasing a

flat iron:

1. Plates. There are different plate widths available in Yes, ma’am.

the market. A flat iron with a wide plate will smooth
more hair at once, while a thinner plate will allow more
versatility during styling. High-quality flat irons use
ceramic or ceramic/tourmaline plates. This type of
plate does not burn hair as it heats gently. Using this
type of plate will seal the hair follicle to stop moisture
loss.

Have you seen different types of hair iron plates?

What are the sizes?

How about the others?

Yes, ma’am.
What is the use of hair iron?
We have the smallest size ma’am.

I have the bigger ones, ma’am.

2. Tourmaline. It is a semi-precious mineral stone that
It is use to make the hair straight ma’am.
can aid in the detoxification of the human body.
Tourmaline is ground into a very fine powder and is
used with ceramic in some of the plates of high-quality
flat iron. The purpose of tourmaline is to create a
negative ion that will reduce frizz.

What is the use of tourmaline in hair iron?

3. Handle. Two basic types of handles are used on

It breaks the natural bond of our hair ma’am.
flat iron design. Marcel handles are what
professionals use. The Marcel handle is squeezed by
the hand to create pressure and hold the hair in place.
The other type of handle is a spring handle, which
creates its pressure to hold hair in place.

Again, what are the two types of hair iron handle?

4. Heating. The best results when using a flat iron

will come if the iron has a heat setting of 400°F. For Marcel and Spring handle, ma’am.
those with fine hair, a lower setting should be used.
When purchasing a flat iron avoid the products that
use metal plates. Purchase a high-quality flat iron
made of ceramic instead. Never purchase a flat iron
that only has one setting as even ceramic can burn
fine hair. Rounded edges will give you more versatility
as square edges tend to cause a crimp in the hair.

Always remember that heating of hair iron depends on

the texture of the hair.

Any questions class? Clarification?

Noted, ma’am.
If none, let us proceed.
None, ma’am.

 ANALYSIS

Based on our discussion,

1. What is the use of chemicals in hair rebonding?

Yes, Ella?

Yes, very good. What else? It is used to make the hair straight ma’am.
Nikki? (student’s raising their hands)
Yes, okay Hair rebonding is a way of straightening It breaks the natural bond of our hair ma’am.
your hair using powerful chemicals. The process takes
several hours. The chemicals break down the bonds
that connect the amino acids in your hair. Once the
bonds are broken down, they are “rebuilt” in another
manner that changes the structure of your natural hair
texture.

2. Is it important that we should know the chemicals

that we are going to use? why?

Angel?

Very good. Of course, Chemicals improve quality of Yes ma’am, to be able for us to choose the
life, but can also harm & kill! Therefore, we should chemicals that are suitable to our client’s hair.
know the hazards of chemicals and the appropriate
precautions to take to work safely and avoid injury. If
there is possible for your client's hair you know what
to do.

3. How do the straightening chemicals affect our hair?

Yes, Jovelyn?
Yes, very good. Chemicals can affect the protein and
the growth of our hair. Some good effects are It makes our hair smooth, straight and silky
mentioned earlier but too much use of these but at the same time it can also damage our
chemicals can also lead to bad effects, hair ma’am.

 ABSTRACTION

1. What do you think will happen to your Afghan type

of hair (kinky hair) if you use weak kind of chemicals?

Yes, Jose?

Yes, it might happen.

2. Why is it important that we understand the different (Jose raised his hands)
types of hair straightening chemicals?
It will not make your hair fully straight ma’am.
Yes, Rhea?

(students are raising their hands)

Yes, that is right. Every chemical has different

compositions that are suited for different types of hair.

3. As a hairdresser, how will you choose the type of client
chemical that is suitable for your client's type of hair?
And why?

Yes, Jillian?
