B. Motivation
Divide the class into four groups. Each group will be given a box. The group representative will
look at the pictures and arrange the letters to form a word.

C. Presentation of the Lesson


Ask the students the following questions.
1. What have they noticed about the pictures they have seen?
2. What are we talking about in sentence number 1 and 2?

Exercise is good for one’s physical and mental health.

Topic Controlling idea

 The topic is like the subject of a sentence. It is the term or concept being discussed. The
controlling idea, meanwhile, is like the predicate of a sentence. It says something about the
topic.
3. What do you think is the topic sentence in this paragraph?

Studying is a sacrifice worth making. It takes a lot of effort, time, money and
determination. There are also sleepless nights to finish your tasks. There are times
when students fail or do not meet their own expectations or those of others. However,
one must strive and finish his or her studies. After all, education is a companion one
brings throughout life.

 Topic sentence is the most important sentence as it helps in organizing the paragraph by summarizing
its idea. It is sometimes referred to as a focus sentence. It is usually placed in the first sentence in the
paragraph.

Vegetables and fruits are as important part of a healthy diet. First, fruits and
vegetables are packed with vitamins and minerals you need to help your body functioning
smoothly. In addition, they give you the carbohydrates you need for energy. Fruits and
vegetables have lots of fiber to help your digestive system work properly. Finally, many
scientists believe that the nutrients in fruits and vegetables can help fight diseases. If you eat
a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, you will be on the road to better health. Remember,

Arrange the following sentences chronologically to come up with a paragraph. Make sure to highlight the
topic sentence.

Group 1: a. Rather we should measure his greatness by the way he faces and accepts defeat.
b. We should not measure man’s greatness by his ability to attain success.
c. He is not less a man in the eyes of God and man if he accepts defeat with courage.
d. He is considered great because he possesses virtue that even some great men lack.
e. He may be ridiculed, but he is not disheartened because he knows that he has
succeeded, not in trying to achieve something but in his relentless struggle with self.

Group2: a. Depressants or ‘downers’ include substances which suppress vital body functions,
especially those of the brain and its parts.
b. Some students have been victims of harmful drugs.
c. They sedate one by acting on one’s central nervous system, resulting in the impairment
of judgement, hearing, speech and muscular coordination.
d. Harmful drugs include depressants or sedative drugs, stimulants, hallucinogens and
volatile solvents.
e. Their medical use includes the treatment of anxiety, tension and high blood pressure.
Group 3: a. The land of Kibbutzim is national property owned by the state.
b. The Kibbutz is based in the principle that “every member gives to the community to the best of his
abilities
and receives from it according to his needs.”
c. Israel is famous for its communal settlement called Kibbutz.
d. A member who leaves the kibbutz is not given any money for the land he leaves.
e. A new member is accepted after trial for about a year by vote of a general assembly of
kibbutz member without any financial contribution on his part.

Group 4: a Sending card has become a part of every Filipinos.


b. They send cars to family and friends on birthdays and holidays.
c. Before the onset of the different social media platforms, Filipinos are fond of sending
cards for many occasions.
d. It is very common to buy cards in stores and send through the mail, but turning on the
computer and sending cards over the internet are the trend now in the new era.

E. Generalization
 Topic sentence points out the main idea in a paragraph.
 The topic, which is the term or concept being discussed, while the controlling idea talks about
the topic.
 It is usually at the beginning of the paragraph. You are able to determine the topic sentence
because the preceding sentences support the topic.
 The reader will be confused on what is the real topic of the paragraph because they are not
organized.
 Topic sentence is useful both to the writers and readers of the paragraph. Through the topic
sentence, the readers have an idea of what the paragraph is about and how the writer intends to
discuss the topic. For writers, it helps them to focus on a single idea or single way to develop an
idea.

F. Assignment

Look at the pictures in each box. Write a topic sentence that matches the pictures.
