Alex Navarro is currently a junior studying Interdisciplinary Studies at Ateneo De
Manila University, with tracks in Music Literature and Creative Writing. He is also pursuing a minor in Education. When she was little, Alex would see his mom write poems on an almost daily basis. Her mom would consistently take him to poetry events, and even to a weekly book club (with a lot of other moms). He started properly writing in 7th grade, when her English Language teacher gave his class the assignment of creating a short story. The final product was a 2000 word blurb that has spurred him to start writing songs, musicals and to eventually start writing poetry. Alex’s writing is her way of expressing his most pent-up dreams, wishes, and hopes. Writing, for him, is a way to fully encapsulate why certain things matter, an exploration of concepts she can’t fully grasp by his own mind. She usually talks about grief, love, and friendship in his pieces. Her submission piece “The Lack of Objective Reality in The Universe is Scary But The Love I Harbor For You is Much More Terrifying” is the result of a spontaneous conversation with an ex-partner, that blossomed into exploring the idea of a relationship in alternate universe. The piece is a realization that sometimes, the only thing left to do is to accept the inevitable conclusion that some things are fated, even to not be with someone. Through this workshop, Alex hopes to further hone her use of form, structure - and mayhaps write “shorter” pieces. She wants to develop his skills in making a piece cohesive, to say so much using only so little. Most of her pieces are written like he speaks: long, rapid, and almost stream-of-consciousness in approach. She is currently preoccupied by his hyperfixation on cartoons such as Amphibia, The Owl House, and She-Ra: Princesses of Power. He also writes and produces music in his spare time (non-existent, due to university requirements). Alex currently resides in Muntinlupa City.
