clouds slowly sail by while sitting in the comfort of their own home.”

that sits within the busy-bustling city of Bengaluru

The Clients
The clients were a family of three and their pet dog,
Mr. Sunshine. They had been keenly following the
architect’s works. What they wanted was simple,
environmentally friendly, utilitarian, minimal space in
the city that feels like home.

Ground Floor Plan Ground Floor

Being an open house plan, one walks into the home to see the
warm living area, the kitchen, the dining, a unique tribal painting,
the spiraling staircase, a peek above, the sky-light, a peek below,
the underground space for entertainment.
AMBARA | WRIGHT INSPIRES 11

Basement Plan
The structure as a whole adapts to the semi-tropical climate of
Bengaluru while also being sustainable and green. An example of
such adaptivity is the oddly shaped, amoeboid basement which stays
relatively cooler compared to the surroundings.

First Floor
First Floor Plan The first floor boasts a playfully meandering terracotta filler slab
which is quite the architectural marvel. The windows to the west
of the home are angled towards to occlude the harsh evening
sunlight and serve as a nice viewpoint towards a children’s
playground around the corner.

Material and Color Palette

The home has a wide range of natural stones and brick walls here and there. The use of natural
materials, there are Kota and Jaisalmer stones used materials such as terracotta jaalis along with exposed

Skylights
As one walks into the home, one notices the charlatan
Sun posing as a chandelier above the spiraling
staircase. It is indeed a challenging task especially in
the confines of a compact piece of land in the middle
of the city, but one sees this beautiful chandelier
through the big ovular sky-light at the center of the
home.
AMBARA | WRIGHT INSPIRES 21

Staircase Details
The staircase was designed to be lightweight,
complimenting the exposed stone and brick
walls without compromising on comfort.
Wood Panels and steel sections were used and
fixed in curved walls with utmost care.
AMBARA | WRIGHT INSPIRES 23

Bridge Details
The Bridge was constructed in wood and
glass supported by box sections. The glass
stripes were used between wooden panels
to create an interesting flooring pattern.
This becomes an important feature that
allows an ample amount of light to come
from the skylight onto the ground floor.
AMBARA | WRIGHT INSPIRES 25

Services
The house has solar panels for energy and heating
water, uses a large number of LED lights, and
has a huge underground tank for rainwater
conservation. It does not have a borewell as
extracting groundwater is inconsiderately bad for
the environment.
AMBARA | WRIGHT INSPIRES 27

Conclusion
One omnipotent and omnipresent element in the
home is light. Unlike the other stationary materials,
the beauty of light is that it’s dynamic, one sees new
patterns every day and so it brings life to the spaces.
