ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL

The One Ring, also known as the Ruling Ring or

the Master Ring, is considered the central plot element
in The Lord of the Rings trilogy because it provides the
narrative thread that runs through the three stories. In
his earlier book The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien described this
mysterious object as a magic ring
that conferred invisibility on its bearer. But in
the Fellowship of the Ring, the first book of the trilogy,
we learn that this piece of jewelry had, in fact, a darker
and more evil power than just conferring invisibility on the person who wore it. The
nature of the ring could be analysed not only in terms of an evil object, but also as a
symbol of temptation, which is a recurring theme all throughout the novel.

Morgoth Bauglir was the first Dark Lord of Middle-earth and Sauron, a skilful sorcerer
of the dark arts, was his most loyal servant. Morgoth’s ambition was to conquer all the
rulers of Middle-earth, so he went to war with some of them and was eventually
defeated. After Morgoth's downfall, Sauron managed to escape and finally settled in
the land of Mordor in eastern Middle-earth. For more than five hundred years, he
remained hidden and secretly began to gather power and strength until he became the
second Dark Lord and started to build the Dark Tower of Barad-dûr near Mount
Doom. Sauron shared the same ambition as his master: he wanted to enlarge and
concentrate his power by governing all the races of Middle-earth. But instead of directly
declaring war on his enemies, he devised a more treacherous plan because, unlike
Morgoth, he was not interested in just defeating rulers. Sauron wished to control his
enemies' thoughts and actions at his own will to be able to corrupt their minds and
souls. He thought that this was the most effective way to utterly destroy his foes.

Sauron´s plan was quite simple. He disguised

himself as Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, and
visited Celebrimbor and the elven-smiths of Eregion.
He told them that he needed their help to craft
sixteen rings that would be given as gifts to all the
rulers of Middle-earth. Celebrimbor and the elven-
smiths accepted to help "Annatar" and while they
were forging the Rings of Power, the Dark
Lord counselled them in magic and the art of
craftsmanship. Seven of these Great Rings were
gifted to the Dwarf Lords and nine to the Kings of
Men. The Elves also received Three Rings as
presents: Narya the Ring of Fire, Nenya the Ring of
Water and Vilya the Ring of Air. These special rings, which had been crafted by
Celebrimbor alone, remained hidden from Sauron. [1] Despite this minor detail, neither
the rulers nor the smiths realised that they had all been deceived by the Dark Lord
because, in the fires of Mount Doom, he had secretly forged a Master Ring to control
the lesser Rings of Power.

Sauron believed that by creating an extremely powerful ring he would be able to

seduce and eventually control all the rulers who wore the Great Rings. In order to
achieve his purpose, he poured most of his power into the One Ring and, in doing so,
he also ensured his own existence because as long as the Ring existed, part of
his soul would be alive. Therefore, this piece of jewelry became an extension of Sauron
himself and, at the same time, it turned into a double-edged sword for him because its
creation both strengthened and weakened his power. By binding his own fate to the
Ring, the Dark Lord knew that he would forever become dependent on it. And the only
way to destroy the Ruling Ring was by throwing it into the volcanic fires of Mount
Doom, where it had originally been forged. That's why the quest to destroy the Great
Ring of Power becomes the central part of the story and the most dangerous mission of
the members of the Fellowship of the Ring.

[1] Even though the Dark Lord had not participated directly in the creation of the Three
Rings given to the Elves, these magic objects were also bound to the power of the
Master Ring because they had been forged with the arts and skills taught
to Celebrimbor by Sauron himself.
