Chapter 6 – Integers

Class VI
MLP
Name: Roll no: Date:
____________________________________________________________________________

Number Line of integers:

 The set of integers consists of zero (0), the positive natural

numbers (1, 2, 3, …), also called whole numbers or counting numbers
and their additive inverses (the negative integers,
i.e., −1, −2, −3, …)
 All negative integers are left of ‘0’ and all positive integers are right of ‘0’.
 The number ‘0’ is only integer which is neither negative nor positive.
 Every negative integer is lesser than ‘0’.
e. g. (-3) < 0
 Every positive integer is greater than ‘0’.
e. g. 3 > 0
 Every positive integer with greater digital value is greater than other.
e. g. 46 > 17
 Every negative integer with smaller digital value is greater than other.
e. g. -17 > -46

 Absolute value of an integer is its numerical value always.

e.g. |-3| = 3, |3| = 3
 Additive inverse of any integer is the number with same numerical value and opposite sign.
e.g. The additive inverse of -5 is 5.
The additive inverse of 56 is -56.
 Additive identity of integers is ‘’0’.
 In case of multiplication,
(+ x + = +)
(+ x - = -)
(- x + = -)
(- x - = +)

+ + + Sum of numerical values 12 + 34 = 46
of both integers

- - - Sum of numerical values (-11) + (-23) = (-34)

of both integers

+ - + Difference of numerical 45 + (-24) = 21

values of both integers (-15) + 35 = 20

- + - Difference of numerical (-56) + 45 = (-11)

values of both integers 36 + (-67) = (-31)

Subtraction of two Integers:

a) - (-) sign is changed into ‘+’ sign.

b) – (+) sign changed into ‘-’ sign.
c) + (-) sign changes into ‘-’ sign.
d) Second integer is changed into its additive inverse.
Example: 45 - (-34) =45+34 =79 { - × - = +}
76 - (+87) = 76+ (-87) = -11 {- × + = - }

Applications of Integers
Integers are not just numbers on a paper; they have many real-life applications. Effect of positive and
negative numbers in the real world is different. They are mainly used to symbolize two contradicting
situations.
For example, when the temperature is above zero, positive numbers are used to denote temperature
whereas negative numbers denote the temperature below zero. They help one to compare and measure two
things like how big or small or more or fewer things are and hence can quantify things.
Some real-life situations where integers come into play are player’s scores in golf, football and hockey
tournaments, the rating of movies or songs, in banks credits and debits are represented as positive and
negative amounts respectively.

Assignment
1) For the following statements, write True (T) or False (F). If the statement is false,
correct the statement.
(a) − 4 is to the left of − 10 on a number line.
(b) − 100 > -50
(c) -1 lies on the left of 1
(d) − 11 is greater than − 25.
(e) 11+ (-16) = 26
(f) (-7) + (-1) = -8
(g) -15 is smaller than -25

2) What is 8 – 13 + 17 – 10 equals to?

3) A number increased by 20 is – 35. What is the number?

4) Fill in the blanks with >,or < or = sign.
(a) (− 1) + (− 3) _____ (− 1) − (− 3)
(b) (− 25) + (− 10) _____ (− 25) - (− 11)
(c) 256 − (− 11) _____ 260 + (− 4)
(d) (− 25) + (− 42) _____ (− 42) − (−25)

5) Simplify: a) 150 - ( - 90 ) - 345 b) 50 – (- 40) – ( - 2)

c) ( - 13) + 32 – 8 – 1 d) (- 17) + (- 18) – (- 9)

6) Where will the monkey reach, if he first jumps 15 steps to right and then 20 steps to left of 1?

7) An elevator is on the twentieth floor. It goes down 11 floors and then up 5 floors. What floor is the
elevator on now?
8) A deep-sea exploring ship is pulling up a diver at the rate of 25 feet per minute. The diver is 200 feet
below sea level. How deep was the diver 10 minutes ago?
9) If it is 5º outside and the temperature will drop 17º in the next six hours, how cold will it get?
10) Rohan walks 50 m towards the East and then walks 30 m to the West.
i) Show his final position on a number line.
ii) How much total distance does he cover?
