Abstraction:

Every profession has a primary area of interest. The field of social work is focused on a person's situation
in life, or more specifically the individual's social functioning.
The improvement of social functioning is the aim of social work wherever it is felt to be necessary, either
by society as a whole or by an individual. This is accomplished by initiatives whose goal is to assist people in
coping with their social situations by modifying themselves, their surroundings, or both.
The social workers' job is done in accordance with the three general functions of social work that have
been established. And here are the following :
1. Preventive- which focuses on locating and resolving possible points of environmental and human
imbalance.
2. Remedial (rehabilitative)- It seeks to help people recognize and address issues that are a result of the
imbalance between themselves and their environment.
3. Developmental - which strives to find, discover, and strengthen the greatest potential inside
individuals, groups, and communities—often by offering them access to their personal and societal
resources.
These functions are connected. In reality, a lot of social workers perform all three tasks, especially when
working with client systems that are complex.

The Generalist approach

In the recent two decades, it has become more common to give professional social workers access to
generic helping processes for use with all kinds of client systems as well as a collection of models and strategies
from which they can take selectively, as necessary, depending on the client issue at hand.

First national workshop – Filipino educators and practitioners recommended that “as a deliberate force for
change, the schools should teach methods based on wholistic approach.

1968 – an initial efforts was made to develop “ models of intervention” applicable to all types of Filipino
client systems.

This trend in the direction of a generalist approach to practice is clearly seen in the more recent social
work literature which uses terminology as “integrated method”, genetic practice, multi-method practice, unitary
approach and general method of social work practice.
