CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presens the background of the study, theoretical/conceptual

framework, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope and
delimitation of the study and definition of terms and other variables.

Background of the Study

According to Maniquiz (2018). A school cafeteria is an important part of

the overall school experience for many students. It is a place where students can
socialize, relax, and refuel during the day. In addition to providing nourishing food,
school cafeteria are also expected to offer a clean, welcoming environment and
efficient service.

Student satisfaction with the their school canteen can widely depending on a
number of factors. Some key factors that may affect student satisfaction include the
quality and variety of food ,the cost of meals, the speed and efficiency of service, the
cleanliness of the cafeteria, and the availability of seating.

Schools that prioritize student satisfaction in their cafeterias often conduct

survey or focus groups to gather feedback from student. This information can be used
to identify areas where improvement are needed, such as adding new menu items,
improving the speed of service, or investing in upgrades to the cafeteria facilities.

Student satisfaction with the food and services offered in the canteen of
Dulop National High School is an important consideration for the school
administration. By prioritizing the needs and preferences of students, the school can
help to ensure that the cafeteria is a positive and enjoyable part of the overall school
experience (Order No. 8 of 2018
Conceptual Framework

In this section, the research indemnified and discussed the variables

related to the problem. The diagram of the paradigm is shown through the
independent variable and dependent variable. Independent variable include the service
offered by the school canteen. Dependent variable cover the student’s satisfaction.
Moderating variable include: age, sex of the respondents.

2. What is the level of student's satisfaction on the food and services offered in Dulop
National High School in the canteen as to the following:

1.1 Food
1.2 Services

3

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature

Related Literature

Most people are concerned with food taken daily without regard for
practices or habits which may influence good health. It is a common observation that
when food is presented to a person his/her attention is focused on the aesthetics value
and how the food appeals to the palate, rather than on the nutritional content. This
reality calls for the need to orient people on the cause-and-effect relationship between
eating and health. One's drive for food and the way he is satisfied is important, food is
needed by man not on for energy work and play but also for maintaining body
function such as breathing, beating of the heart, digestion of food, circulation of the
blood, absorption of food, excretion of body waist and other processes. No single type
of food is capable of providing all the nutritional needs of a person. It is therefore
important that daily diet contains the correct amount of all food listed in daily guide to
good nutrition. (Velaquez, 2018)

According to Marroquin and Brandt (2018) stated that even though

services usually tend to Be “naturally intangible” which means it cannot be remove or
destroy, rather than an abject with the opposite nature, it might not be a clear feature
after all. And it is the cause of many services of facilities that can provide an output
that is compound by tangible components, such as product, equipment, physically
entity and even staff. Moreover there are facility activities composed by two stages,
and it is the interaction between the customer and the provider is being held, while the
second stage might take time to take advantage to be visible actions. In addition they
stated also that the best example for assumption in the services offered by a canteen
catering provider, because it composed of wide variety of retailing foods and drinks.
On the other hand of the studies in the country of Philippines, according to Omadto
(2018), said that each of the canteen management and facilities follows a guidelines
on their operational management set by the Department of Education through their
order, the guidelines given to them was to rationalize the operation of the
management of school canteen in the public and private academic system to ensure
that the school canteen shall help to eliminate malnutrition among their pupils.
Moreover, school canteen may operate under a variety of management structures, a
formal management agreement discussing the terms and the conditions in order to
sign by the relevant management parties such as principal, school council, or the
private contractor.

Review of Related Studies

The State Government of Victoria (2018) said that school canteen and other
school food services are critical educational resources. They are an important part of
the school environment because they feed the students and the rest of the school
community. The school canteen should reflect the school educational goals and
support and complement students learning. When eaten every day, food from the
school canteen can make up as much as a third of a students total daily intake and
have a big impact on their health and nutrition. This shows how vital the school
canteen reflect the school educational goals, so the more it is well managed, the more
its goals and values are upheld. To keep customers happy, facilities should provide a
nice place for students to eat where they can feel more at ease. The people who did
the study for Tarlac State University found that the students were happy because of
the good atmosphere, cleanliness, and taste of the food. The factor that most students
would like to be more satisfied with is the price
According to Pangilinan (2018) services are essential to satisfy your
customers. The students are sometimes exhausted by their subject teachers paperwork.
School canteen staff should serve the customers with a smile, and the staff should be
friendly so students will come back to the canteen. Maniquiz (2018) said that a
canteens management showed not only how good the food was but also howw good
the services was. It shosw that the characteristics of the staff person can satisfy the
students when it comes to service. To make sure the canteen is clean and healthy, the
school needs to know if the students are happy with the services and make that e
priority. The school canteen needs to make policy for the managers, which the staff
will then follow. The school council is responsible for the canteen and its policies, the
employment and dismissal staff, and the ordering of goods for the canteen. The rules
and guidelines have to be followed in most of the school: there must be clean washing
facilities, the canteen must have proper ventilation and lighting, and the facilities
should have a bigger space. The food containers, equipment, and utensils must
maintain their cleanliness. The rules and regulations would help make the students
comfortable and satisfied when it comes to safety standards. (DepEd Order No.13
series of 2018)

RESEARCH METHOLOGY

This chapter presented the research design, research setting, respondents of

the study, sampling design, research instrument, data collection and the statistical
techniques used.

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive method in this study. This method is

appropriate since the researcher aimed to get the satisfaction of students on the food
and services offered in the canteen of Dulop National High School.

Research Settings

The research was conducted at Dulop National High School, Dulop,

Dumingag Zamboanga del Sur.

Research Respondents

Five (5) students from each section were randomly selected to complete the
sixty (60) students in Dulop National High School were considered as the respondents
of the study.
Research Instrument

A well-constructed and self developed questionnaire checklist used to get

the desired information from the students. The questionnaire has two (2) parts. First
part contains the profile of the respondents and the second part contains 10 questions
about the student’s level of satisfaction on the food and services offered in the canteen
of Dulop National High School.

Data Gathering Procedure

In gathering the data, the researcher secured an approval from the office of
the principal from them to be allowed to conduct the study in the school premises.

After, the approval, the researchers personally I formed the adviser or the
subject teacher to administer the survey checklist to the respondents. Immediately
after the conduct of the study, retrieval of the instruments was done and made a
thorough scrutiny of all items to find out whether the questions were properly
answered. Lastly, after all the data were gathered and collected, the researchers
tabulated, analyzed and presented the data in textual and tabular form.

Statistical Technique Used

That data gathered were analyzed and interpreted using the following
statistical tools:

To determine the profile of the respondents, the researchers utilized the

frequency and percentile.
To determine the student’s level of satisfaction on the food and services
offered in the school canteen in Dulop National High School, a Weighted Arithmetic
Mean was used.

WAM= Ʃ fx1+fx2+fx3+fx4
N

Where WAM = weighted Arithmetic Mean

Ʃ = summation
f = frequency
x = weighted
n = number of respondents
