ABSTRACT
The study aimed to determine the relationship of using tiktok and the
academic performances of the students of Grade 11. Random sampling technique
was used, which included 151 students from Cabangan National Highschool in
Brgy. Sta. Rita Cabangan Zambales. This study utilized a non-experimental design,
specifically, correlational technique, through the use of a paper questionnaire,
mean and Person r. With an overall computed participant express a high level of all
the given statements in epistemological values. The statement about staying up late
because of tiktok in yes category acquired 62 participants or (41.06%),meanwhile
in no category it attained 89 participants or (58.94%).Followed by another
statement about ever missed completing assignments on time because of tiktok that
gathered 54 or (35.76%) in yes category ,while in no category there’s a 97 or
(64.24%). The result, it has a good effect on student between using tiktok and to
there academic performances.

CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
A well-known app where users can create, watch, and share 15-second videos on the social
networking site TikTok by utilizing their mobile devices or webcams. The app is renowned for its
high levels of engagement and addictive qualities because to its carefully curated feeds of
entertaining short videos with music and sound effects. Student progress in a variety of
academic topics is gauged by their academic performance. Teachers typically utilize graduation
rates, classroom performance, and results on standardized tests to gauge students' academic
progress.
TikTok, a rapidly growing social media platform, has gained immense popularity among
adolescents and young adults. Its short-form video format, engaging content, and user-friendly
interface have made it a prominent source of entertainment and communication for individuals
worldwide. However, Concerns have been expressed about the possible effects of TikTok's
frequent usage among senior high school pupils on their academic performance.
Recent years have seen an increasing number of studies investigating the link between social
media use and academic achievement. For instance, they discovered and demonstrated that
student academic performance was negatively impacted by non-academic social media
use.Additionally, using social media for academic purposes or multitasking on it had little
impact on students' academic performance. Failure of social media self-control, which is vital,
moderates the relationship between "social media usage for non-academic purposes" and
students' academic performance [Hameed, I., Haq, M.A., Khan, N.plus Zainab, 2022 ).In the
same way, research by (Rathi U., Daniel John K. J., and Jose J.M. 2020) discovered that a
student's performance in the classroom is significantly impacted by their use of social media. A
student's academic performance declines the more time they spend on social media. This ought
to act as a wake-up call for academicians and students alike. It is imperative to integrate social
media's many positive qualities into lessons taught in classrooms. We restrict students of the
vital skill sets needed to lead and bring about change the longer academicians strive to adhere
to the traditional teaching technique from a constrained border of class and books. It's
necessary to find a base ground where social media can be advantageous Additionally, an
additional study found that the respondents to this one hardly ever use social media on a daily
basis. This includes both teachers and pupils. The majority of them chose to communicate with
one another, gather knowledge, and share perspectives on particular topics via Twitter. Due to
their use of social media, pupils hardly ever study. The majority of those surveyed performed
satisfactorily academically, with grades ranging from 80.96% to 89.30%.Based on the
statistically substantial correlation between the two, it was concluded that social media use and
pharmacy students' academic achievement were related. [The participants in this study] hardly
ever engage in everyday social media use. Most of them used Twitter to interact with one
another, learn more about specific topics, and exchange thoughts. Students rarely study
because of their social media use. The majority of respondents to the study did well
academically, with scores between 80.96% and 89.30%. Based on the considerable relationship
between the two, it was determined that there was a connection between pharmacy students'
usage of social media and their academic achievement. ( REVINA J. BORGOOS, PRINCESS

Additionally, it has been studied how Tiktok in particular affects users' cognitive abilities and
time management skills. According to Audrey Mekler (2021), who analyzed the results of the
online survey, participants were more likely to get sidetracked on TikTok the more time they
spent using the app each day, even when they were supposed to be paying attention in class
and finishing their homework. Along with the daily TikTok time variable, losing track of time
also had an effect on the other variables. Participants were more likely to become sidetracked
on TikTok while they were supposed to be paying if they felt like they were losing track of time
on the app when they were supposed to be finishing their homework and paying attention in
class. Another intriguing discovery was that individuals were more prone to lose track of time
on TikTok the more time they spent using the app each day. The amount of time spent on
TikTok each day was the same between college years, therefore it was irrelevant what year a
person was in because they all spent roughly the same amount of time there each day.
According to a research, college students who are just entering adulthood have a higher
propensity to become disoriented when using TikTok. Therefore, this can have a negative effect
on how these college students are capable of finishing their homework and paying attention in
class. These results hold true regardless of gender, year in college, race/ethnicity, or experience
of grownup status. This suggests that emerging adults in college are likely to share these
findings in general. One crucial point to keep in mind, however, is that the majority of study
participants were female, therefore additional research should be done to examine results in a
more equal proportion of males and girls.Zhao, H.'s study is identical.and C. Wagner. They
discovered in 2023 that the ideal flow experience for TikTok users is influenced by three
It is essential to note that there is not enough of detailed and current research explicitly
addressing the connection between senior high school students' use of TikTok and their
academic performance. TikTok has distinctive features and is very popular, so it is important to
look into how its usage habits affect this demographic's educational outcomes.
This study aims to determine the relationship between TikTok and Academic performance
among Grade 11 Students in Cabangan National High School. By analyzing TikTok usage
patterns and , screen time. This research seeks to provide valuable insights for educators, parents,
and policymakers concerned about the potential impact of Tiktok on student learning and
achievement.

NULL HYPOTHESIS
The null hypothesis for the quantitative research exploring the relationship between TikTok
usage and academic performance among grade 11 students in CNHS posits that there is no
statistically significant association between the extent of TikTok usage and the academic
performance of these students. InNull hypothesis
The null hypothesis for the quantitative research exploring the relationship between TikTok
usage and academic performance among grade 11 students in CNHS posits that there is no
statistically significant association between the extent of TikTok usage and the academic
performance of these students.
In essence, this hypothesis assumes that the average academic performance of students who
heavily engage with TikTok is no different from the average academic performance of those who
do not use the platform. It suggests that TikTok, despite its popularity, does not play a substantial
role in shaping or influencing the academic outcomes of the students in question.
This null hypothesis sets the stage for statistical analysis to either support or reject this
assumption. Through rigorous data collection and examination of academic performance, the
research aims to determine if there is enough evidence to refute the idea that TikTok usage has a
measurable impact on the academic achievements of grade 11 students in CNHS.
The null hypothesis serves as a critical component in the scientific method of hypothesis testing.
If, after thorough analysis, the data fails to provide convincing evidence against the null
hypothesis, it implies that TikTok usage may not be a significant factor affecting academic
performance. On the other hand, if the evidence suggests a substantial impact, researchers may
reject the null hypothesis in favor of an alternative, indicating a relationship between TikTok
usage and academic outcomes.
By formulating and testing the null hypothesis, this research seeks to contribute valuable insights
to the ongoing discourse on the influence of social media platforms, such as TikTok, on the
educational journey of high school students. The outcome of this study holds the potential to
inform educators, parents, and policymakers about the nuanced dynamics between technology
use and academic performance, fostering a better understanding of the contemporary challenges

Age. The bulk of participants—56.95% of the sample—are 16 years old. This is followed by
17-year-olds (37.09%), indicating that the participants are adolescents. It is noteworthy that
participation rates decrease with age, with 18-year-olds participating at 4.64%, 19-year-olds
participating at 0.66%, and 20-year-olds participating at 0.66%. This indicates that younger
individuals in this academic setting are heavily utilizing TikTok. Adolescence is an important
time of transition between childhood and maturity. A number of psycho-sociological theories
have provided different perspectives on understanding the traits and processes of adolescent
development. Furthermore, as time goes on, these ideas draw attention to a few issues and
differences in the literature about the growth of teenagers. Adolescence is a time when most
children are most susceptible because it's when they can develop behaviors that will follow them
into adulthood. The teenage years are separated into two age groups: middle adolescence (ages
13 to 17) and early adolescence (ages 10 to 13).14–17 years old), as well as late adolescence
(18–22 years old) (Allen & Waterman,2019). Adolescence is defined as a time of usual physical
and mental development as well as emotional growth. Researchers are now beginning to look
into the psychological effects of teenage social media use. Chukwuere and Chukwuere (2017)
assert that social media platforms have the greatest impact on people's moods because, even
when a user is just perusing the site for no apparent reason, they may eventually become aware
of a change in mood as a result of the content they are seeing. Social media networks therefore
14
make it easy for users to spread both joyful and unfavorable feelings in society at large
(Chukwuere and Chukwuere, 2017). This may become increasingly important since students are
using social media platforms more often than they used to and because social networking is
playing a larger role in their lives. Iwamoto and Chun (2020) assert that social media posts have
an effect on pupils, especially in light of the growing number of people who use social media on
a daily basis. These posts could encourage students to start comparing themselves to other people
or to have very high standards for both themselves and other people, which can have a lot of
detrimental emotional impacts.
Strand. In regards to the student strand, the Technical Vocational and Livelihood Track had
the biggest number of participants (71, or 47.02%), followed by the Humanities and Social
Science (HUMSS PIAGET) strand, which had the second-highest number of participants (35, or
23.18%). The STEM fields are science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The
Humanities and Social Science (HUMSS PAVLOV) strand had 17 participants, or (11.26%), or
11:26 percent. The Accounting and Business Management (ABM) attained 11 students as a
participants (or 7.28%),Senior high school strands vary in the curriculum type and focus of
student’s studies Generally, student’s have different preferences when it comes to choosing a
strand. Some students prefer a strand focusing on academic subjects. For example, science, math,
and English. Some students, however, could select a strand that focuses on technology, technical
subjects, or vocational fields. strand that combines academic and technological abilities may
even be preferred by some students (BARON, 2022). No matter what their precise fields of study
or specialization, students from a variety of academic strands continue to use the TikTok app,
proving its appeal irrespective of their particular fields of study or concentration.
Epistemological value
The epistemological values of the respondents in using Tiktok are shown in the table 3.
15
The participant express a high level of all the given statements in epistemological values. The
statement about staying up late because of tiktok in yes category acquired 62 participants or
(41.06%),meanwhile in no category it attained 89 participants or (58.94%).Followed by another
statement about ever missed completing assignments on time because of tiktok that gathered 54
or (35.76%) in yes category ,while in no category there’s a 97 or (64.24%).
The participants, a significant number (41.06%) acknowledged staying up late because of their
TikTok activity. This result implies that a substantial number of the study participants used TikTok
late at night. Given that a significant percentage of the sample population falls into this category, it is
important to investigate the reasons behind and possible consequences of staying up late engaging in
TikTok-related activities. The majority of participants, or 58.94%, stated that TikTok prevented them
from staying up late. This suggests that a significant proportion of the participants in the survey do
not link their late-night activities to their use of TikTok. The greater number of respondents who
answered "No" raises the question of what factors dissuade individuals from staying up late because
of TikTok. This can be a sign of a group that sets different goals at night or is more self-disciplined
in controlling their screen usage.
According to the findings, a sizable fraction of the population may be significantly impacted by
TikTok's interference with their sleep cycles, while a bigger percentage seems to be resistant to or
avoids such disturbances.
A significant proportion of the participants, specifically 35.76%, admitted to having missed deadlines
for tasks due to TikTok activity. This result implies that a sizable portion of the study sample faces
difficulties in handling their academic obligations as a result of using TikTok.The proportion of this
group indicates a sizable presence of people who could want assistance or coping mechanisms to
manage their social media use and academic responsibilities.
Sixty-two percent of the participants said they had not experienced assignment completion delays as
a result of TikTok. This suggests that a greater proportion of the participants in the study had been
able to effectively distinguish between their TikTok activity and their academic obligations. The
higher percentage of respondents in the "No" category indicates that a sizable proportion of
participants have prioritized their academic work higher than social media use or built efficient
time management techniques.
16
The findings reveal TikTok might have a noticeable impact on academic achievement for a
significant percentage of the research sample, which might point to the necessity for
interventions or awareness raising efforts aimed at helping people in finding a better balance.
ted Table 3
17
SOCIAL VALUES
The social values of the respondents in using Tiktok are shown in the table 4.
The participant express a high level of all the given statements in social values. The statement
about do tiktok has contributed to a decline in academic in yes category acquired 54 participants
or (35.76%),meanwhile in no category it attained 97,participants or (64.24%).Followed by
another statement about skipping classes or study sessions because of tiktok that gathered 21 or
(13.91%) in yes category ,while in no category there’s a130 or (86.09%). The statement about
believing that tiktok has a negatively impacted their overall grades that attained 35 participants
or (23.18%) in yes category ,on the other hands in no category that gathered 116 participants or
(72.86%).
1. A substantial portion of the participants (35.76%) think that their academic performance has
declined as a result of TikTok. This result implies that a sizable portion of the study population
believes TikTok has a detrimental effect on their academic performance.
The proportion of respondents in this category shows that participants are seriously concerned
about TikTok's possible impact on their academic success.
The vast majority of participants (64.24%) do not think that TikTok has played a role in a decline
of academic achievement. This suggests that a greater proportion of the participants in the survey
do not believe that using TikTok has a detrimental effect on their academic performance. The
higher percentage in the "No" category indicates that a sizable portion of participants believe
they can balance their activity on TikTok with their academic obligations without experiencing a
drop in performance.
The findings imply that although a sizable portion of participants recognize that TikTok usage
may have a detrimental impact on academic achievement, a greater portion do not link TikTok
use to a drop in academic performance.
18
regular study schedule or academic attendance. The percentage in this category shows that,
although some participants admit TikTok's impact on their academic obligations, the research
population does not generally engage in this behavior. The overwhelming majority of
participants (86.09%) stated that TikTok had not caused them to miss any study sessions or
lessons. This suggests that a sizable fraction of the study's participants do not let TikTok get in
the way of their academic obligations. The greater number of respondents who answered "No"
indicates that most participants have been able to keep their TikTok activity and academic
obligations apart.
While a tiny percentage of participants acknowledge that they have skipped classes or study
sessions because of TikTok, the majority of people have been able to successfully maintain a
boundary between their social media participation and academic obligations, according to the
survey. Comprehending the variables that impact these actions can aid in creating focused
interventions that promote scholastic achievement.
3.The people who took part, a noteworthy but relatively small percentage (23.18%) think that
TikTok has negatively impacted their overall grades. This result implies that a sizable portion of
the study sample members link their use of TikTok to a drop in their academic achievement. The
amount of respondents in this category suggests that participants are quite concerned about
TikTok's possible impact on their academic performance. On the other side, 72.86% of
participants, or the majority, do not think that TikTok has had a detrimental effect on their
overall grades. This suggests that a greater proportion of the participants in the study do not
perceive a direct link between their use of TikTok and a reduction in their academic
achievement. It appears that a greater number of participants believe that TikTok activity has
either a good or neutral effect on their grades, based on the higher percentage in the "No" group.
The research study reveals participants' differing opinions on the connection between TikTok use
and final grades. The majority emphasizes the intricacy of the interactions between social media
involvement and academic outcomes, even while a sizable number voice concerns about a
negative impact.
19
TABLE 4
PERSONAL VALUES
The personal values of the respondents in using Tiktok are shown in the table 5.
The participant expresses a great degree of personal value for each of the claims made. The
statement about does student use tiktok daily in yes category acquired 109 participants or
(72.19%),meanwhile in no category it attained 42,participants or (27.81%).Followed by another
statement about do student spend more than one hour on tiktok each day that gathered 84
participants or (55.63%) in yes category ,while in no category there’s a 67 or (44.37%). The
statement about being distracted from your studies due to tiktok use that attained 71 participants
or (47.02%) in yes category ,on the other hands in no category that gathered 80 participants or
(52.98%).The statement about has tiktok affected your ability to focus on homework or
assignments that gained 58 participants or (38.41%) in yes category, meanwhile in no category
there’s a 93 participants or (61.59%).
1.Over seventy-one percent of the participants, or a large majority, said they used TikTok every
day. This result implies that a sizable fraction of the research sample regularly engages in active
use of the platform. The data in this category shows that a considerable proportion of the studied
population uses TikTok on a daily basis, which is indicative of the platform's widespread
21
highlighting how deeply ingrained the site is in the lives of a sizable majority of them.
Addressing the possible effects of social media use on other facets of people's lives requires an
understanding of these usage patterns.
2.55.63% of the respondents, or a significant percentage, said they used TikTok for more than an
hour every day. This result implies that a sizable segment of the research sample uses the site
extensively every day and spends a sizable amount of time on TikTok-related activities. The
number of individuals in this category shows that TikTok is widely and significantly used,
demonstrating how capable the platform is to draw in and hold the interest of a sizable segment
of the study population for prolonged periods of time each day. Although a considerable
percentage of participants spend over an hour on TikTok every day, a noteworthy portion of
users—44.37 percent of the total—do not surpass this daily time criterion. This suggests that a
substantial portion of the population either uses TikTok infrequently or not at all on a daily
basis. The percentage in this group indicates that there is variation in the ways that people use
TikTok, with a sizable segment of the research population using the site moderately on a daily
basis.
The outcomes imply that TikTok succeeded in capturing the interest and time involvement of a
large section of the cohort's population size, highlighting its impact as a renowned and
interactive social media platform.
3.A sizable fraction, 47.02% of the participants, admit to using TikTok being a distraction from
their academics. This result implies that a sizable portion of the study's participants believes
TikTok to be an origin of temptation that impedes their ability to concentrate in class. The
number of respondents in this category suggests that those who participate are quite concerned
about TikTok's possible detrimental effects on their capability to focus on their academics.
Among the participants, 52.98% claim that they do not become preoccupied from their academic
work by using TikTok. This is a large fraction of the sample. This suggests that a significant
portion of people simply don't view TikTok as a disrupting component or have developed
appropriate techniques to maintain their school consideration while utilizing the app.The number
of participants in this group indicates that there is variation in how people manage to utilize
TikTok and their academic obligations; a significant proportion of users manage to prevent
disruptions.
22
The data collected imply that although TikTok might turn out to be a distraction for a
considerable proportion of users, a sizable portion of users are able to study effectively without
experiencing any adverse effects from TikTok usage.
4.A substantial amount of those who took part (38.41%) feel that TikTok has interfered with
their ability to concentrate on projects or schoolwork. This result implies that a sizable portion of
the study group believes TikTok interferes with their ability to concentrate and pay attention
when doing school assignments. The number of people in this category shows that those who
participate are quite concerned about TikTok's possible detrimental effects on their academic
performance. Most responders (61.59%) said TikTok hasn't interfered with how well they were
able to concentrate on schoolwork or homework. This suggests that a greater proportion of
people apparently aren't seeing TikTok as an impediment to their educational endeavors or have
succeeded in trying to lessen its influence on how they study. This category's percentages
indicates that there is variation in how people perceive and manage the connection amongst the
usage of TikTok and academic concentration, with a substantial percentage indicating little
effect.
The outcomes imply the fact that although a sizable portion of users may view TikTok as a
distraction, a greater proportion of users can manage to stay focused on their academic work
while enjoying the app.
TABLE 5
The results of the quantitative research indicate that the majority of student respondents are 16
years old, with a significant presence of 17-year-olds, suggesting heavy TikTok usage among
adolescents. In terms of academic strands, the Technical Vocational and Livelihood Track has
the highest participation, followed by Humanities and Social Sciences. The findings reveal that
TikTok usage is prevalent across various academic fields.
In terms of epistemological values, a notable proportion of students stay up late due to TikTok,
but a majority do not believe TikTok affects their academic performance negatively. Socially,
some students admit to missing study sessions because of TikTok, but a larger majority manages
to maintain a balance between TikTok use and academic obligations. Regarding personal values,
a significant number of participants use TikTok daily and for more than an hour, potentially
affecting their focus on academic tasks. However, a substantial portion still effectively manages
their academic responsibilities despite TikTok usage.
Overall, the research highlights the complex interplay between TikTok usage and academic
outcomes, suggesting the need for interventions or awareness programs to help students strike a
better balance.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this quantitative research sheds light on the profile and values of student
respondents in relation to TikTok usage. The majority of participants are adolescents, with a
significant representation from various academic strands. The findings highlight the prevalence
of TikTok use, especially among 16 and 17-year-olds. Regarding the epistemological values, a
considerable number of participants stay up late due to TikTok, while a majority does not believe
it affects their assignment completion. Socially, a notable percentage thinks TikTok contributes
25
to a decline in academic performance, yet the majority disagrees. Personally, many participants
use TikTok daily and for more than an hour, with a portion feeling distracted or believing
TikTok affects their ability to focus on homework.
Recommendations
2. Time Management Workshops: Offer workshops to help students develop effective time
management skills, enabling them to prioritize academic tasks over prolonged TikTok usage.
4. Mental Health Support: Considering the potential impact on mental health, establish support
mechanisms within educational institutions to assist students who may face challenges in
balancing social media use and academic responsibilities.
5. Further Research: Conduct follow-up studies to delve deeper into the long-term effects of
TikTok usage on academic performance and well-being, providing a more comprehensive
understanding of the subject.
These recommendations aim to foster a healthy relationship between students and social media,
ensuring that platforms like TikTok do not negatively impact academic success and overall well-
being.
