Basic Concepts
Algebraic expression is an expression that consists of algebraic terms, operation symbols
(+,-,×,÷ ) or brackets.
An algebraic expression has no equal (=) sign.
The algebraic expression 3 x−5is an example of linear expression of the form ax +b , where x is
the only variable , and a and b are constants.
Like term are terms that have the same variable ,e.g 2 x and 5 x
When two terms are not like terms they are known as unlike terms, e.g 2 x and 2 y ; x and x 2.
The general form of quadratic expression in one variable is a x 2 +bx +c , where x is the
variable, a , b and c are constant and a ≠ 0; e.g 5 x 2−13 x+6
In general, a ( b +c )=ab +ac and a ( b−c )=ab−ac this is known as the distributive law.
Factorization is the process of expressing an algebraic expression as product of two or more
algebraic expressions.
Factorization is the reverse of expansion.

CH# 09 (Triangles, Quadrilaterals, and Polygons)
Basic Concepts
Triangles:
Triangle∆ ABC that has three sides AB, BC , and AC.
The points A, B and C are called the vertices of the triangle.
∠ BAC, ∠ABC and ∠ACB are known as the interior angles of ∆ ABC.
Quadrilaterals:
A quadrilateral is a closed plane figure that has four sides, four vertices and
four interior angles.
The line segment BD that Joins the vertices, B and D, line segment AC that
joins the vertices A and C is diagonals of the quadrilateral ABCD.
The sum of interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360 ° .
Polygons:
A polygon is a closed plane figure with three or more straight line segment as
its sides.
A polygon in which at least one of its interior angles is more than 180 ° is
called a concave polygon.
A polygon in which all interior angles are less than 180 ° is called convex
polygon.
In polygon, interior angles + exterior angle = 180 ° .
Sum of interior angles of an n-sided polygon = ( n−2 ) × 180 °.
The sum of exterior angles of any polygon is 360 ° .
A line is a line of symmetry of a figure if the “half-shapes”.
