Drifter Rotation Circuits

Drifter rotation is supplied by pump #4. The pump is mounted on the

PTO port of the diesel engine. When the engine is operating at
drilling (2300) RPM, the pump delivers 40 LPM or 10.5 GPM. During
tramming, this fluid can be directed to the tram circuit for high-speed
forward tram. During drilling, the fluid from pump #4 is directed to the
rotation circuit. This circuit contains a meter off valve that can be set
to direct a portion of the rotation fluid back to the reservoir. This
allows adjustment of the rotation speed of the drifter for maximizing
performance. The rotation circuit is protected by relief valve #4. This
valve is set at 140 kg/cm2 or 2000 PSI.

The rotation circuit can also be equipped with a Super Rotation

feature. A switch on the driller’s console activates super rotation.
When energized, 20 liter/min or 5 ¼ GPM of fluid is diverted from the
#2 hydraulic pump (drifter circuit) into the rotation circuit. This feature
allows high-speed rotation for overburden or soft ground drilling. With
the super rotation activated, rotation speed will be increased to apx.
260 RPM. In normal rotation the maximum speed will be 150 RPM.

To enable synchronization of the feed and rotation during rod

changing, the rotation circuit receives the full flow from pump #4.
This is accomplished when rod changer circuit is energized.
Pressure developed in the rod changer circuit is directed to shift the
pilot valve just down stream of the rotation speed control. This action
blocks the fluid flow from the speed control needle valve thereby
forcing all of the #4 pump fluid to the rotation directional valve.

Adjustments to the rotation circuit:

Rotation maximum pressure

Relief valve #4 limits the pressure in the rotation circuit. This valve is
set at 140 kg/cm2 or 2000 PSI. See Chapter 2, page 5 for adjustment
procedures.

Rotation speed control

Rotation speed is adjusted to maximize performance of the drifter.

Analysis of performance should include the penetration rate during
drilling as well as the life of the bit. Over rotating, as an example, can
cause excessive wear to the gauge or outside buttons of the bit.
Under rotating may cause structural failure of the bit buttons.
