Capstone Project Proposal Draft

The Capstone Focus: I have chosen Cooking

Proposed title for my Project Proposal: (write the proposed title for your Capstone Project in one clear
sentence): Cooking Tik Tok show tutorials with different kinds of recipes!

What is your inquiry question that interests you for further research? It should be a question that connects with
a purpose, passion or personalized area of interest for you. This is a question that you cannot just google an
answer for. Please see examples from your Capstone booklet.
My inquiry question is:

How does the presentation style of cooking tutorials on Tik Tok influence viewer engagement?

Rationale/context: Detail your reasons for choosing this inquiry question. Explain WHY you are choosing to
investigate this topic as a major area of focus. How does this area of inquiry connect to your passion(s),
purpose? Why is it of personal interest to you?

I’m choosing to investigate the influence of presentation style of cooking tutorials because I’ve always found
the cooking videos I see on my social media fascinating and entertaining to watch, so I’m excited to start
sharing recipes that I’m interested in. This area of inquiry can connect to my purpose of inspiring others of
the enjoyment of cooking through some engaging content. This is interesting to me because of how recipes
are shown could affect how people can learn, and I want to be able to hopefully research this more to make
my videos better.

Background: What background knowledge/connections/prior learning do you have in this area of inquiry?

I’ve had TikTok since 2019 so I have good experience and how to use my editing skills on the app. I’ve
never made cooking videos before and have little cooking experience but back in 2020 during the pandemic
I took a virtual cooking/baking class for three weeks which was fun for me to learn and if I find the recipes
I’ll definitely use them. I’ve also sometimes helped my mom with dinner. I liked to bake a lot throughout the
pandemic so I also have good experience with what and how to use the kitchen, and you may be asking
why not make a baking show instead and that’s because I want to do something somewhat new.

Career connections: What is your intended career area at this point in time? What connections does this
inquiry question have to your life, academic and/ or career goals?

This TikTok cooking show doesn’t have anything to do with my career choice, but this will definitely be very
beneficial to my future as an adult when I’m independent and if I have a family someday because knowing
how to cook is an important life skill to have.

be connected with your project? Outline and explain the connections.

• For subjects it includes cooking, social/digital media, communication, maybe marketing.


• For core competencies skills this can include video production, develop recipes, managing social
media, audience engagement.

Capstone Presentation medium: select one or more project mediums you wish to use to present your

My main medium is going to be on TikTok where I’ll be posting all my videos, but I can
also use my Instagram account story to promote my account and letting people know
about my account and that I’ve posted a new video.

Description of my Capstone project. Specific Project Details of the Capstone Project: what will you
research, create, study, produce, solve, investigate? What product will be produced at the end of this
project for evaluation. Write a one-page description outlining your proposal.

• Research different kinds of presentation styles of cooking videos, create and edit my own videos,
study how to engage audiences, solve any sort of challenges relating creating good content. At the
end of this project I am going to have a good variety collection of tutorial videos along with that I
can make a PowerPoint report presentation to summarize and conclusions of how my experience
with this project went.

Resources/ Technology/Skills: Make an assessment of the resources, technology and skills you will
need to be able to complete this project. What is your plan to be able to access/learn all of the resources
necessary to achieve completion of this project? Detail your plans.

Some resources can include ingredients for cooking, any equipment like the camera on my phone,
access to the internet for any research, a script for when I do voiceovers. For technology I’ll use my
phone to film and edit, a tripod to hold my phone, good lighting, maybe a mini mic. Skills I need is the
ability to cook, video editing, knowledge for social media marketing. My plan is to know how to access
and gain these resources and skills, possibly through personal equipment, online tutorials to give me
recipe ideas or written ones on google or by a book, talk to someone who may have the necessary
experience to give me a hand.

Mentors/Community Connections: What types of mentor(s)/community connections will you need to


help you complete your capstone project? How will your mentor(s) help you? What is your plan to access
the mentorship/community connections necessary for this project?

The only person I could think of who has great experience and can be my mentor is my grandma, anytime
she makes appetizers or dinner for us it is always so amazing, and it inspires me to try to do her recipes. I
can message her asking for recipes and ask her to come over for guidance while I cook her recipes and
or the ones that I find myself. She also works in the kitchen of a restaurant here in Langley called Dead
Frog. I know it’s preferable to not have someone close to me to be my mentor but my grandma is the only
person who I can have confidence with to help me out.

Project limitations: What are some project limitations and potential obstacles that you foresee that might
affect progress with your Capstone Project?

I think the only limitation or obstacles that I may have is possibly messing up what I cook even though I
can just try again or even just the time management for this project.

that you feel should be included in your project proposal.

I just want to make a fun way to teach people and myself how to cook with short mini long videos in case
they may want to try the recipes that I provide.
