FOREWORD
This is Module 9 of the Agricultural Indicators System (AIS)

report, which is published annually by the Bureau of Agricultural
Statistics (BAS). The module is entitled Economic Growth and it deals
on the economic performance of the country measured through GNP,
GRDP and GVA. The statistical tables cover the years 2005 to 2009.
The BAS continues to conduct review and improvement of the

AIS to meet the demand for statistics and indicators of its clients and
stakeholders. It welcomes suggestions and comments from readers on
how this report can be further improved.
The BAS would like to acknowledge the National Statistical

In 2009, the country’s GNP amounted to P8.81 trillion at current prices. It

registered a growth of 6.6 percent, lower than the previous year’s

increased by 4.6 percent during the same period.

At constant prices, GNP rose to P1.65 trillion in 2009. Its growth slowed
down to 4.0 percent from the previous year’s 6.4 percent. Per capita GNP
went up by 2.0 percent to P17,944 in 2009 (Table 1).
Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP)
The aggregate gross value added (GVA) of all productive sectors of a

region during an accounting period is referred to as the Gross Regional
Domestic Product (GRDP). The sum of the GRDPs will yield the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP). It provides information on the total output
produced domestically. The growth in GRDPs describes economic
performance of the region.
The 2009 GDP at current prices was estimated at P7.67 trillion. It

exhibited a slower growth of 3.6 percent compared to the previous
year’s 11.4 percent. The slowdown in the growth of GRDPs was

observed in all regions except Bicol Region and Caraga. For 2009, Bicol Growth rates of gross value added (GVA) in agriculture

respectively. Sluggish increases were observed in MIMAROPA and Agricultural activities

suffered reduction in growth. In NCR, GRDP declined by 0.4 percent in

CALABARZON (Tables 2d and 2e).
NCR maintained the highest contribution to total GDP. It shared around

37.0 percent at current prices and 33.0 percent at constant prices over
the years 2005 to 2009. CALABARZON shared about 11.0 percent both at
constant and current prices. On the other hand, less than 3.0 percent
shares in the national GDP were recorded in CAR, Ilocos Region, Cagayan
Valley, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga and ARMM
(Tables 2c. and 2f).
Per Capita GRDP
GRDP can be expressed in per capita terms. It indicates regional disparity

in terms of production or output of every person in the region for a
period. The year‐on‐year growth in per capita GRDP indicates
performance or productivity of the population in the region in terms of
the value of output and services produced.

In 2009, the per capita GDP at current prices went up to P83,261. In that

despite the slowdown in growth. Bicol Region posted the biggest gain at

The performance of the agriculture sector

measured through GVA in agriculture refers
to the difference between gross output of
agricultural production and intermediate
inputs used in the production processes. This
provides information on subsectors that
served as sources of growth in the agriculture
sector in the regions.
By Region
At current prices, the national GVA in agriculture, fishery and forestry

(AFF) amounted to P1,138.33 billion in 2009. It grew by 3.3 percent, lower
than 2008’s growth of 16.8 percent. Slower growth in GVA in AFF was
noted in all regions. Northern Mindanao posted the biggest expansion at

The top contributors to total GVA in AFF were CALABARZON and Central
Luzon with shares ranging from 10 to 14 percent. However, their shares

comprised bigger shares from 8 to 10 percent which were increasing in Agriculture
2009. CAR remained with the least contribution at less than 2.0 percent a/ excluding forestry
(Tables 4c and 4f).
By Subsector
In 2009, GVA in agriculture and fishery excluding forestry amounted

to P1,134.04 billion at current prices. Its growth in 2009 slid to 3.3
percent from the 16.9 percent achieved in 2008. This was attributed
to the slowdown in the expansion of all the subsectors. GVA in crops
grew by only 2.7 percent. Specifically, GVA in palay increased by 1.8
percent while that of corn inched up by 0.3 percent. Furthermore,
GVA in coconut declined by 20.0 percent from a bigger increment of
38.0 percent a year ago. Likewise, sugarcane posted a decline by 4.0
percent. Banana posted a bigger growth of 18.1 percent. GVA in the
livestock subsector went up by 6.7 percent. Poultry sustained its
growth by 11.0 percent. Fishery came up with almost zero growth in
GVA compared to last year’s increment at 18.8 percent (Tables 5a and
5b).

a/ excluding forestry Among the sectors, AFF remained as the smallest contributor to the
country’s GDP. In 2009, the sector’s share went down to 14.82 percent at
current prices and 18.11 percent at constant prices. The service sector’s
contribution in the 2009 GDP reached 55.0 percent at current prices and
about 50.0 percent at constant prices. The bulk of the share came from
the trade and private services at around 15.0 percent each at current
prices. In real terms, trade dominated the service sector accounting for a
share of 16.70 percent. Shares of the industry sector went down to 30.20
percent at current prices and 32.13 percent at constant prices. The
manufacturing component remained as the biggest source in the
industry sector comprising shares of around 20.0 percent at current and
constant prices (Tables 6a and 6b).
In terms of growth, the service sector posted the biggest gain at 6.6
percent at current prices and 2.8 percent at constant prices. The biggest
growth came from private and government services at more than 10.0
percent at current prices and 6.0 percent at constant prices. AFF sector,
on the other hand, performed better compared to the industry sector.

Growth in AFF sector was 3.3 percent at current prices but zero at

a/ excluding forestry Among the sectors, AFF remained as the smallest contributor to the
country’s GDP. In 2009, the sector’s share went down to 14.82 percent at
current prices and 18.11 percent at constant prices. The service sector’s
contribution in the 2009 GDP reached 55.0 percent at current prices and
about 50.0 percent at constant prices. The bulk of the share came from
the trade and private services at around 15.0 percent each at current
prices. In real terms, trade dominated the service sector accounting for a
share of 16.70 percent. Shares of the industry sector went down to 30.20
percent at current prices and 32.13 percent at constant prices. The
manufacturing component remained as the biggest source in the
industry sector comprising shares of around 20.0 percent at current and
constant prices (Tables 6a and 6b).
In terms of growth, the service sector posted the biggest gain at 6.6
percent at current prices and 2.8 percent at constant prices. The biggest
growth came from private and government services at more than 10.0
percent at current prices and 6.0 percent at constant prices. AFF sector,
on the other hand, performed better compared to the industry sector.

The top contributors to total GVA in AFF were CALABARZON and Central
Luzon with shares ranging from 10 to 14 percent. However, their shares

comprised bigger shares from 8 to 10 percent which were increasing in Agriculture

(Tables 4c and 4f).
By Subsector
In 2009, GVA in agriculture and fishery excluding forestry amounted

to P1,134.04 billion at current prices. Its growth in 2009 slid to 3.3
percent from the 16.9 percent achieved in 2008. This was attributed
to the slowdown in the expansion of all the subsectors. GVA in crops
grew by only 2.7 percent. Specifically, GVA in palay increased by 1.8
percent while that of corn inched up by 0.3 percent. Furthermore,
GVA in coconut declined by 20.0 percent from a bigger increment of
38.0 percent a year ago. Likewise, sugarcane posted a decline by 4.0
percent. Banana posted a bigger growth of 18.1 percent. GVA in the
livestock subsector went up by 6.7 percent. Poultry sustained its
growth by 11.0 percent. Fishery came up with almost zero growth in
GVA compared to last year’s increment at 18.8 percent (Tables 5a and
5b).

In 2009, the per capita GDP at current prices went up to P83,261. In that
year, growth slid to 1.6 percent from 9.3 percent recorded in 2008.
Majority of the regions recorded increasing per capita GRDPs in 2009
despite the slowdown in growth. Bicol Region posted the biggest gain at

The performance of the agriculture sector

measured through GVA in agriculture refers
to the difference between gross output of
agricultural production and intermediate
inputs used in the production processes. This
provides information on subsectors that
served as sources of growth in the agriculture
sector in the regions.
By Region
At current prices, the national GVA in agriculture, fishery and forestry

(AFF) amounted to P1,138.33 billion in 2009. It grew by 3.3 percent, lower
than 2008’s growth of 16.8 percent. Slower growth in GVA in AFF was
noted in all regions. Northern Mindanao posted the biggest expansion at

observed in all regions except Bicol Region and Caraga. For 2009, Bicol Growth rates of gross value added (GVA) in agriculture

NCR maintained the highest contribution to total GDP. It shared around

37.0 percent at current prices and 33.0 percent at constant prices over
the years 2005 to 2009. CALABARZON shared about 11.0 percent both at
constant and current prices. On the other hand, less than 3.0 percent
shares in the national GDP were recorded in CAR, Ilocos Region, Cagayan
Valley, MIMAROPA, Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, Caraga and ARMM
(Tables 2c. and 2f).
Per Capita GRDP
GRDP can be expressed in per capita terms. It indicates regional disparity

in terms of production or output of every person in the region for a
period. The year‐on‐year growth in per capita GRDP indicates
performance or productivity of the population in the region in terms of
the value of output and services produced.

In 2009, the country’s GNP amounted to P8.81 trillion at current prices. It
registered a growth of 6.6 percent, lower than the previous year’s
Government Services 7.60 7.49 7.12 6.85 7.48 increase of 14.3 percent. In per capita terms, GNP valued at P95,522
increased by 4.6 percent during the same period.
At constant prices, GNP rose to P1.65 trillion in 2009. Its growth slowed
down to 4.0 percent from the previous year’s 6.4 percent. Per capita GNP
went up by 2.0 percent to P17,944 in 2009 (Table 1).
Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP)
The aggregate gross value added (GVA) of all productive sectors of a

region during an accounting period is referred to as the Gross Regional
Domestic Product (GRDP). The sum of the GRDPs will yield the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP). It provides information on the total output
produced domestically. The growth in GRDPs describes economic
performance of the region.
The 2009 GDP at current prices was estimated at P7.67 trillion. It

exhibited a slower growth of 3.6 percent compared to the previous
year’s 11.4 percent. The slowdown in the growth of GRDPs was
