LESSON PLAN

Level: 2º ano do EM Subject: Chapter 1 of the book Gulliver’s travels, by Jonathan Swift Teacher: Nayane Dias

Overview
The first chapter of the book Gulliver’s travels (a public domain book) will be approached, as well as the trailer of the movie with the same name.

Main goals (objectives): Materials


- Either the book or its first chapter (it’s a public
- Identify and describe the main character of the book and domain book);
the adjectives that would describe his personality and - The trailer of the movie, presented by the teacher
appearance; in an electronic device.
- Analyze some verbs (in the simple past).
- Compare the possible differences between 2 different
literary genres- the book and the trailer.
- Practice the reading of the chapter.

Information given to students

- Jonathan Swift’s bio and his literary approach before


asking the students to read the text at home;
- Ask students to read the first chapter at home;
- They must underline some words that are new for them.

During the 2 classes (50 minutes each), the students will Internet and the trailer of the movie.
read (again, out loud) this 6-page chapter and then will
identify and analyze some of its aspects, such as its main
character and different vocabulary entries (adjectives) that
can describe him. After it, they’ll compare it to the trailer of
the movie and ponder if they have any similarities
between them.

1) Read the 1st chapter of the book out loud. [25

2) In pairs, students will identify adjectives that


describe the main character of the book, both
apparently and personally wise. [25 minutes]

3) After it, they will find some verbs in the simple


past that were used by the author to tell the
reader about Gulliver’s background (which school
he attended, where he was born, etc.). [25 minutes]

4) Show the class the trailer of the movie “Gulliver’s


travels” and discuss with them if they think the
movie will be like the book, and how a movie can
be different from a book. [25 minutes]

Assessment
.
It’s a 10-mark assignment. The students’ skills to differ
verbs in the past, as well as their ability to identify different
kinds of adjectives will be assessed (5 marks)
Their pronunciation and reading will also be taken into
consideration (3 marks) and also their ability to compare
different literary genres (2 marks).
