Running Record (decoding- reading words)

Student is able to:


 identify the individual letter sounds in a word
 sound words out letter by letter as well as blend letter sounds
 break words into chunks (split by syllables) and put them back together
 recognizes common word patterns
 read the full sentence to find the context of unknown words
 reread words that do not make sense
 return to incorrect words and correct them if the word isn’t an actual word or if it doesn’t fit with the context

What to work on:


 sounding words out letter by letter as well as blending letter sounds
 identifying the individual letter sounds in a word
 breaking words in to chunks (split by syllables) and putting them back together
 reading an unfamiliar word based on its initial sound (X relies heavily on the pictures for
a clue instead of the pictures and the text)
 recognizing common word patterns
 reading the full sentence to find the context of unknown words
 rereading words that do not make sense
 returning to incorrect words and correcting them if the word isn’t an actual word or if it doesn’t fit with the context

Fluency (reading quickly and accurately…smoothly)

Student is able to:


 read at a good pace
 read with very few errors
 read without having to interrupt reading too often to sound out words (sight word recognition)
 pay attention to punctuation in text
 inflect voice as well as change voice and pace appropriately

What to work on:


 reading at a good pace
 reading with fewer errors
 reading without having to interrupt reading too often to sound out words (sight word recognition)

Comprehension (understanding)

Student is able to:


 look at pictures to help support and understand context
 reread sentences to clarify understanding or unknown words
 pre-read words to help anticipate upcoming text (while reading out loud they are looking forward and trying to decode unknown
words or make connections to what they are reading)
 recognize when a word does not fit with the context of the sentence
 use vocabulary, text, and pictures to summarize the main idea
 pay attention to supporting details throughout text
 discuss simple story lines and make predictions
 connect text to real world experience or other text

What to work on:


 looking at pictures to help support and understand context
 recognizing when a word does not fit with the context of the sentence
 rereading sentences to clarify understanding or unknown words
 looking ahead while reading to anticipate unfamiliar text or ideas and make connections
 using vocabulary, text and pictures to summarize the main idea
 paying attention to supporting details throughout the text
 using information in text to generate questions and make reasonable predictions and connections
 recognizing the difference between important details and unimportant details when summarizing
 connecting text to real world experience or other text
 visualizing what is being read in order to deepen understanding
 summarizing the story in a clear and sequential way
