Subject: What it is like to be a teenager in Ecuador
Date: January 2nd, 2024

Hello my dear friend, I would like you know something about Ecuadorian teens life. Most of the
teenagers in Ecuador attend to school in the morning form 7 A.M. to 1 P.M. and they have a
recess about 30 minutes at 10 o’clock. The class periods are 45 minutes long. They also have
about 12 or 14 subjects each week.

The majority of teens have their own cell phones which are used to chat, play and watch videos.
Unfortunately, they do not use them in a good way, for instance, to search interesting topics in
order to improve their knowledge.

Ecuadorian teenagers love sports, especially soccer, basketball and swimming. In fact, many of
them participate in National competitions. They practice sports in the afternoon.

See you

Maura

Do girls and boys have the same opportunities

1.- Read the text and answer the following
questions

Malala Yousafzai’s Life Story

1997. I was born in Mingora, Pakistan on July 12,
1997. Welcoming a baby girl is not always cause
for celebration in Pakistan, but my father,
Ziauddin Yousafzai, was determined to give me
every opportunity a boy would have.
2008. My father was a teacher and ran a girls’
school in our village. I loved school, but
everything changed when the Taliban took
control of our town. The extremists banned many
things like television and playing music. They said
girls could no longer go to school. In January
2008, when I was just 11 years old, I said
goodbye to my classmates, not knowing when, if
ever, I would see them again.
2012. I spoke publicly on behalf of girls and our
right to learn, and this made me a target. In
October 2012, on my way home from school, a
masked gunman boarded my school bus and
asked, “Who is Malala?” He shot me on the left
side of my head. I woke up 10 days later in a
hospital in England.
2018. Now I am studying at the University of
Oxford. Every day I fight to ensure that all girls
receive 12 years of free, safe, quality education. I
am determined to fight until every girl can go to
school. With my father I established the Malala
Fund, a charity dedicated to giving every girl an
opportunity to have the future she chooses.
Because of this, I received the Nobel Peace Prize
in December 2014 and became the youngest ever
Nobel Prize winner.

1. What is education like in Ecuador?

2. Do all girls and boys attend school equally?

3. Is Malala an inspiration for girls around the
world?

2.- Look at the dictionary the meaning of the
following words
banned: ……………………………….
no longer: …………………………….
masked: ………………………………
boarded: ……………………………..
ensure: ………………………………
charity: ……………………………..

3.-Read again and Complete this Venn

diagram. You can use Malala’s story but you
might have to search for additional
information to complete the diagram.
