MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 10
SY 2019-2020
Day 9
I. OBJECTIVE :
At the end of the lesson the student should be able to:
Find the sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence
II. CONTENT :
A. Topic : Arithmetic Sequence
B. Concept :
Arithmetic Sequence – is sequence in which each after the first is obtained by adding a constant number
called common difference (d)
an = a1 + d(n-1) where, an is the nth term, a1 is the first term, d is the common difference, n is a counting
number and d is obtained by subtracting any two consecutive terms.
n
Sn= [2 a1 +d ( n−1 )] -sum of arithmetic sequence
n
C. Reference : Math 10 Learner’s Module_U1.pdf file p.20; Math10_TG_U1.pdf file p.36
D. Materials : Manila Paper, pentel pen, laptop.
E. Value Focus :
III. PROCEDURE :
A. Pre-Activity
i. Drill/Review
Insert 3 arithmetic means of the given first and last terms below.
1. -3 and 10
2. 68 and 3
3. 12 and 42
4. -4 and 4
5. ½ and 3
ii. Motivation
Ask the students to find the sum of the numbers 1 to 100 as fast as they can.
iii. Presentation
“Today we’re going to find the sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence”
B. Activity :
Group Activity: (1 item per group)
Activity 1: What is the sum of the terms of each finite sequence below?
(the students will just add all the terms)
1. 1, 4, 7, 10
2. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
3. 10, 5, 0, -5, -10, -15
4. 81, 64, 47, 30 , 13, -4
5. -2, -5, -8, -11, -14, -17
Process their answers briefly.
After the students had posted their answer, introduce the formula for finding the sum of an
n
arithmetic sequence. Sn= [2 a1 +d ( n−1 )] -sum of arithmetic sequence
n
Group Activity. Activity 2: Find the sum of each of the following.
1. integers from 1 to 50
2. odd integers from 1 to 100
3. even integers between 1 and 101
4. first 25 terms of the arithmetic sequence 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, ...
5. multiples of 3 from 15 to 45
C. Analysis :
Activity 1
What is the activity all about?
How did you find the activity?
What did you do to get the sum of the terms?
Did you find difficulty in finding the sum of the terms?
Activity 2
What is the activity all about?
How did you find the activity?
What did you do to get the sum of the n terms?
D. Abstraction :
How to find the sum of the n terms?
E. Application :
The sum of the first 10 terms of an arithmetic sequence is 530. What is the first term if the last term
is 80? What is the common difference?
IV. EVALUATION :
A. Find the sum of each of the following.
1. numbers between 1 and 81 which are divisible by 4
2. first 20 terms of the arithmetic sequence –16, –20, –24, …
3. first 10 terms of the arithmetic sequence 10.2, 12.7, 15.2, 17.7, …
4. 1 + 5 + 9 + … + 49 + 53
V. ASSIGNMENT :
A. Find the sum of each of the following.
1. The third term of an arithmetic sequence is –12 and the seventh term is 8. What is the sum of the
first 10 terms?
2. Find the sum of the first 25 multiples of 8.
3. Find the sum of the first 12 terms of the arithmetic sequence whose general term is an = 3n + 5
